If you get a USB 3.0 hard drive it will work fine on your PC with USB 2.0, just at USB 2.0 speeds. And if at some point you want the extra speed, you can fit a USB 3.0 card to your PC (as I show in the video).

Thanks for this comment. :) The way I say the website name is quite deliberate to make it memorable. When I started this KZfaq channel, the intention was to promote the website (and then its ExplainingTheFuture sister site on my other channel). But now, the KZfaq channels are more popular than the websites -- but the name has kind of become my catchphrase, so I keep saying it the same, distinctive way! More videos soon. :)

Just watched this video after ordering an external hard-drive (1 TB. A TERAbyte?!?!? I went to a super nerdy engineering college and this was almost unfathomable back in the day to us geeks). Mr. Barnatt is and was sooooo ahead of his time. Wow. "In five years..." That was 2010! It's 2020, 9 months into the 'Rona apocalypse, and when my new fancy e.h.d. wouldn't "work" with my 3 year old laptop, I found this video. Mr. Barnett, I wish I had stumbled upon you earlier. +Wyntrr_End We clearly see different devices! I have not seen a new PC or laptop for years that does not have USB 3.0, and indeed many tablets and smartphones now have micro USB 3.0 connectors. Most external hard drives are USB 3.0, as are many USB keys.

Real-world transfer speeds are always far lower than theoretical maximum transfer speeds! :-) Also, here the PCIe USB 3.0 card will limit the max theoretical transfer speed to 2.5Gbps. Two years down the track, the USB 3.0 ports integrated into most new motherboards will probably work faster than the early USB 30 hardware I show here -- though I doubt any will approach the theoretcial 4.8Gps spec.
