ExplainingComputers Do you find it exciting to have Windows 10 on the PI ? Cause frankly I don't get it. We already have linux which does 110% of what we need. Why would someone want to use Windows in this context ? Just trying to make sense of it...

Francois Ste-Marie I find it exciting that Microsoft want to include Pi hardware in their IoT ecosystem. You are absolutely right that Linux covers all bases on the Pi. But I think it is good to Windows (and the rest of us) for Microsoft to be reaching out to hardware like the Pi.

When it comes to my RaspberryPi projects, I will be sticking to *nix. I was only considering Windows 10 IoT because I thought it would have been a mini Windows RT like device. I'll still upgrade from Windows 8.1 -> 10 on my laptop, but for everything else its either RHEL/CentOS or Raspian. Windows for you people life and Linux for your developer life. They both have their place.

Moses Prefor Yes, it is a bit disappointing . . . Nothing like a version of Windows RT, for example. Something like that would have made us all very happy -- even just a desktop with a cut-down version of Word and a browser . . . Never mind, I will be showing you lots of really fun non-Microsoft stuff on the Pi 2 fairly soon now! :)

ExplainingComputers People just don't get it. It never meant to be a proper desktop, but a host for applications you can develop yourself. What about hosting web server, which can work with real hardware, while using enterprise scale language like C# with VisualStudio. Add couple of nice things like ReSharper, remote debugging, and type safety of C#. I can knock on something useful without ever leaving Windows world: no Python, no *nix, just pure enterprise stuff.

Can't wait until a full desktop will be available for later Raspberry Pi models, personal computers really would become common then! Also with Windows on the Pi, PC-TO-PC interfacing is going to be a lot easier! Perhaps using SSH to install files on a remote Pi will be forgotten by a simple UI on a desktop.

Hi Christopher, I hope you are well and that things are going good at your end. I love the video which is as up-to-date as can imaginably be. However, in using the GPIO, I can see that I would need a heavy duty relay to control larger voltage devices. While I sort of understand relays, I haven't seen any demo's of relays where one set of contacts switch on while the other set of contacts switch off (flip-flop style). Any chance of such a demo, please, if it does not take too much time out from your schedule? I get that there's another set of pins for the other state, but I don't understand its nomenclature. No worries if it is not possible. In either case,I hope you enjoy the summer to come and I look forward to further vids as and when you can make them. As always, if I can help, please do say. Keep well.

@NeoHoshi
@NeoHoshi 9 жыл бұрын
Mark Blake You will need a powered USB hub that has a separate power adaptor if the Pi is turning off. The Pi can only supply a certain amount of current to each USB device while having to run itself at the same time. I would suggest a logitech USB wireless keyboard and mouse combo. They both run off 1 receiver and the other USB port can then be used for the WiFi provided the WiFi adaptor doesn't use too much power. The one I have works fine that way.

I agree it doesn't need a great GUI as it is meant for small electronic devices. But hey! Let's be honest, it lacks a great useful CLI as Linux does also lacks a cool package manager too. ExplainingComputers It's not really targeted to end users. It's more for the enterprise market where they need to tighten security and allow easy remote/centralised management. Windows IoT is ideal for kiosks, digital signage, PoS systems, metering, ... it allows for easy complete customization of the UI in a plethoria of programming languages, from html/js to XAML/C# and DirectX/C++. Without having to jump through hoops to remove the Windows Shell (explorer, start, ...). Windows IoT has a lot of ways to disable access to sensitive features of the OS. And has support for advanced security stuff like Secure Boot and TPM. In the future it can also be domain joined, so security is managed centrally and corporate policies can be applied. The other people here that keep saying Microsoft is a dinosaur don't really have a clue how the business IT world works.

Steven De Kock Personally, I feel Windows is less secure than Linux, and I would never use it in a business setting. Hell, I don't even use it at home if I can avoid it.
@SDeKock87
@SDeKock87 9 жыл бұрын
Silent Hunter At home I'm a Linux/*BSD user as well (planning to get a Mac too). Next to my Windows gaming pc ... In a business environment, there is just to much tinkering involved to to manage Linux/BSD servers. Windows servers are much easier to (centrally) manage not to mention most IT admins/consultants understand and can support them a lot better. Most IT departments do have some Linux servers running for legacy/third-party applications but avoid them as the plague and rarely install security updates. Windows being less secure is largely just FUD especially if you keep all this in mind. I do recommend my customers to not expose Windows servers directly to the internet. I usually recommend OpenBSD or pfSense as their edge firewall if they don't want to invest in a firewall appliance. And I recommend fronting their web traffic with a reverse proxy like Pound or Nginx ... Most of the security features in Windows IoT (previously Embedded) are not only for networking security. But more "physical" things like disabling access to certain windows features like the control panel, disabling dialogs, disabling keyboard shortcuts and filtering which USB devices can be connected. Very interesting if you are developing a kiosk or PoS system. msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn449278(v=winembedded.82).aspx

I already made this comment on the RPi facebook page but I'll do it here again. It seems you need to have Visual Studio 2015 pro as a minimum to develop for W10 IoT. I really like to do the programming and testing on 1 computer instead of using a external computer to write my code. I also don't want to be locked in to the Windows Development suites and languages. I like to use python to quickly prototype.

MrMoonpie001 Thanks for this. As far as I am aware (and I've yet to really get up to speed on this!), Windows IoT apps are written in and deployed from Microsoft's Visual Studio 2015 RC, and are then controlled over the network via Windows PowerShell. A preview of Visual Studio 2015 RC is downloadable from Microsoft. There is, I think, a considerable learning curve here! :)

Windows without windows. That sucks. For now I will stick to Raspbian where I can just use APT and simply install some interface, web server, database, file server. However I'm happy that Microsoft is entering IoT world and I hope they will bring some plug-and-play features and support quality in general. I'm tired of chaotically managed linux distributions where I have to f**k around 2 hours with kernel or read 20 ToDo's to install damn WiFi card or 3G modem on linux.

Despite a flurry of pointed comments against Windows 10 vs *nix on Raspi 2, this is all pretty significant. Probably as significant as Windows 95 was. It would appear that Windows 10 will be able to run Android Apps, iOS, etc.Together with Windows on these devices, interesting thisngs may be affoot.

Breen Whitman Windows 10 won't be running Android or iOS natively rather Android and iOS developers can port or convert their apps to WIndows Universal App with their existing code. Simple apps and Games can be port easily but sophisticated stuff like Android apps that uses Google Play Services needs their code changed by the devs. So in paper Microsoft taks may seems very exiting but in reality they are not.

Kawshik Ahmed Well that's true but it might be better one day. The problem is emulation or clever programming (ex. The amount of people that do not understand the applications (no pun intended) this is supposed to be used for. Why are you trying to run a graphical os on a computer with less than a gig of ram? this is obviously meant to run headless programs for those who have no choice but to compile for windows.

Dion Koffie I'm sure this is true -- Win 10 IoT for the Pi2 is for very specific stuff. And as the video shows, it boots slower than, say, Raspbian. But I really thought that I had to do a video showing what the "Windows for Raspberry Pi" thing was all about!

I have to agree with Casaverdero. Major disappointment from this... I'm sure it may work out decently if you are making things, but I hoped for at least a decent interface of some sort with support for applications. (They have windows mobile which should be the same architecture as PI shouldn't it ?) So far I've found the Ubuntu Mate to be the best looking distro but I'd still prefer access to android... Thanks for the video, just wish I had found it before I bought the Pi 2!

I think one of the best things about the Pi was that it showed kids they have options beyond Windows and Apple. I liked that it was something free and open for the most part with Linux. I don't want Microsoft getting their hooks in kids at an early age. I'd rather they be taught to seek flexible computers where they are legally in absolute full control of their devices.

So what's the point of it? Am I missing something? Windows always had a horrible CLI, so if it's just a CLI OS then Linux is much better for the purpose. You can't run any of your old favorite programs because it's not x86. The only way Win10 on Rpi maybe would sense was if it had deskop and you could build small pc and you could run software which is problematic on Linux, eg Skype, Netflix client etc. This, I'm not sure who it's aimed for or what's the advantage.

+SwizzleDude Where do you have information about state of my knowledge? That's very presumptuous of you. :) You say it's meant for devs - fair enough, but that doesn't answer in what way it is better than using linux. .NET coding? Typically on PC when people go for windows they do that because they want to run windows-specifc programs (games, office, etc). Here we have ARM so that doesn't really apply because there are no legacy windows ARM apps. So what's left that windows allows and linux doesn't? It's an honest question.

Why do you say Windows 10 is a significant development for using the Pi2 as part of an Internet of things? Most of the Internet is built on Linux servers.
@ExplainingComputers
@ExplainingComputers 9 жыл бұрын
Inaflap The Internet is indeed built on Linux servers. However, the Internet of Things (IoT) is yet to really arrive, will involve a whole new level of device-centric infrastructure, and is clearly a big target market for Microsoft. So I made the comment in the context of Win 10 IoT for the Pi2 being a potentially significant development for the rollout of IoT devices.
@Inaflap
@Inaflap 9 жыл бұрын
ExplainingComputers I doubt the OS used will be of much importance. TCP/IP (w/ IPv6), WiFi, wired interface standards... those things are important to an IoT. Whatever the OS, it will have to support those standards on a range of processors. I can't see how M$ is going to make money out of it... unless they intend trying to control the information flow. To be honest, much as I love tech, the IoT scares me because I see it enabling a few people to have much more control over the masses. I don't like the idea of my washing machine and cooker (or the Fat Controllers at the energy company) deciding when I can have clean clothes, or eat dinner either.
@ExplainingComputers
@ExplainingComputers 9 жыл бұрын
Inaflap Yes, the IoT is potentially very scary! And I think Microsoft's interest is to position Windows 10 at the middle of their customer's IoT world -- and that's why I think IoT for the Pi2, etc, is significant. As you say, the actual hardware and platform does not matter -- unless you are a company like Microsoft, when building an IoT "swarm" in every home based their tech may matter a great deal! I'm not saying this is something we should welcome, but I don't think the launch of Windows 10 IoT alongside the other six versions now announced is an accident! :O

Given that Windows 8 RT ran on an ARM processor (on early Surface tablets), a version of Windows 10 with a desktop for the Pi2 is theoretically possible. Not that Microsoft are likely to actually create it.

+Christobanistan a game is not a GUI. its graphical software, those can exist without a GUI. harping back to the days of dos when you could launch games outside of windows, gui stands for Graphical User Interface, and is designed to extend functionality and allow you to utilise the hardware in different ways not limited to running games. do your homework before you start calling people dumb.
@RonLaws
@RonLaws 8 жыл бұрын
***** Windows IoT is finished, that's basically the point. it's a barebones firmware with some extendable functionality but not intended to be a full Desktop OS. I'd rather stick to Rasbian and code things on a much more flexible environment than waste time trying to re-invent the wheel. - plus with Binary translation, it's possible to run a x86 chroot environment on Rasbian and thus run wine, and then run (some) windows applications along side native x86 and arm linux software. (And it already has a wide range of GUIs available.) (Look up Exagear)
@RonLaws
@RonLaws 8 жыл бұрын
+SwizzleDude There was a huge hype and a lot of misconception surrounding it's pre-launch, it was never properly explained, instead everyone posted headlines saying "Windows 10 coming to Raspberry Pi" Nobody had heard of Windows 10 IoT core, and nobody really expressly pointed out that it was not going to be the same as the full build, this was nothing short of an advertising tactic. Now people are bitterly disappointed because it isn't what they thought it was. I frankly am glad it's not a full Desktop OS, Rasbian already has that covered adequately, and in todays internet age, it would be unfair to restrict newcomers to the programming space to a windows garden, because the reality is, windows is not a market leader in embedded systems and data centres, the former is what the Pi is all about, and it's healthier for people to learn on a diverse platform, using languages that don't lock you in to using hardware deemed worthy by the corporation behind it.

Is that all it can do? Nobody is waiting for that! Today it is possible to run Windows on an iPhone or whatever, but this is very disappointing. Lets keep the Raspberry Pi to Linux, that works very well. The Raspberry Pi had always been capable of sending data to other computers, also to PC still running Windows, so for this Internet of Things Windows Helper is no use at all.
