Very good intro to Binary, Trinary, Quaternary, Quinary, Senary, Septenary, Octonary, Nonary, and Denary counting. Thanks James. This would have helped me in Intro to Comp Sci in 1976

I listened to you yesterday on the Making Math Moments That Matter podcast and didn't know what you were referring to when you said exploding dots. This video has me absolutely tickled to explode so more! Awesome share, I can't wait to share with my students!

My daughter's comment: I like how you write on the screen. It's weird, but cool. My son's comment: I like the marker noise when you write on the board. My comment: the kids understood and enjoyed this. thank you.

wait, is he mirror writing?
@the_chalkface

I spent the first half of the video trying to figure that out - my brain kept over-compensating by mirroring things unnecessarily! Then I decided he was just writing normally (coz that's just so much easier) and reflecting the final video so it's legible for us. But I still like the idea that he learned to mirror write just for these videos...

So, it's just an introduction into binary? Every CS student worth a dime is supposed to be able to do this in sleep

This is really just a Hundreds Chart in disguise. Why not use the base ten manipulates, with the chart, as I find that this is going to confuse kids down the line and using the chart creates number sense rather than using an abstract representation. Sorry but I would not use this. My kids ( class) all understood and loved maths using base ten - right off the start (which is what our number system is based on). You tell them the rule ( just like you did with the dots) and they get it ( and see it using manipulatives)I really do not understand why you would do this to elementary children, have you taught this age group for any length of time? It looks impressive especially to those that are not math oriented but I do not see how this would help. It is a neat gimmick but not a teaching strategy. So sorry to criticize.

No worries! Of course, this is the lead-in to making that very connection - and one can certainly argue that such a lead-in isn't necessary, or even helpful. However, do have a look at the full story as developed here: gdaymath.com/courses/exploding-dots/ . The context for this start is a lead-in not to just base-ten work but the entire story of place-value and its role throughout the entire K-12 curriculum and beyond.

HI, I did not see the entire story but made an assumption that was the purpose. I think it is a lovely way once kids have a solid sense of numbers and our base ten system. Explaining how it came to be can be very useful. I still think that introducing the background info is a nice to know and not a need to know at a young age. I believe it would cause confusion to kids under 10 years old. I know you did not intend that. I have emailed you ( although be careful it was at 4:00am so It might be off a little).

You are so in sync with me! We say that this really is for about age ten and up, not at all for a first introduction to the notion of place-value. It's about bouncing off a beginning place of (previously established) understanding and playing with and reflecting on the depth it can go as your understanding and sophistication with mathematics beautifully evolves.

Thank you for that response, it validates my belief system. I will be looking at the things you are using to teach.As you probably know the grade 6 kids across the province are not doing well in maths. I have strong opinions on why this is so but is can become so political and it should not be. Just a love of kids and maths. There are some easy answers.

It was so very nice of you to respond. I hope this clarification can help teachers using this method as you intended. Thanks again.
