The second week of the Exploding Heart quilt is all about sewing the blocks! I'm sharing some tips for sewing the blocks whether you used a rotary cutter or AccuQuilt to cut the pieces.

I love this pattern and plan to make one. I cut all my squares. I cut 108 - 4 1/2" backgtound squares as the pattern shows. However when I go to start piecing the quilt the pattern shows 89 of the squares get used. I don't see any mention in the pattern where the other 19 squares are used. I am confused

I have my pieces cut and am starting to sew them today! Thanks for the great video. I want to share my fabric choices, but I don’t want to just put it on my own FB page using the hashtags because I’m not sure anyone would be interested. I wish we could just post it somewhere in this group of QAL friends.

I accidentally bought the HST 4 1/2” go die instead of the QST 4” die. Can I use this die to make this quilt? If so how do I go about it?

Hi there ! Can you please confirm the accuquilt die for the triangles. Is it 55316 ?

Hello! I use AccuQuilt die # 55711 (direct link to it is in the video description). It comes in the 8" Qube or by itself. However, # 55316, # 55047, and the Ohio Star BOB die # 55174 all work too!

can the half square triangle in a roll work for making these faster?

You could use those! I am not that familiar with them, so I don't know the sizes they come in, but they could definitely work!

When doing most of these blocks, the pattern says to press the seams open. Is there a reason for that, or can we press them in a roundabout way that we can do with a four patch block? (Where you get a little four-patch square in the center of the back side. I don’t want to press them before finding this out, if it makes a difference when we sew the rows together.

You can press the seams however you like! The pattern says to press them open to reduce the bulk when sewing the blocks together, but I personally press the seams to one side because it's faster. If you're using a Bloc Loc ruler to trim the blocks after sewing, then pressing to the side works better for that. Either way works, so just do what you like best!

Hello I’m new to quilting and I just ordered this pattern. I don’t have an accucut the cut out the pieces so I am going to use a rotary cutter. Why do you have to sew all those line on the squares before you cute them with a rotary cutter? Can’t you just cut them out? I don’t get why you are doing this.

Hi, Stephanie! The size of the triangles needed to make the finished squares are an extremely odd measurement, and not easily cut using a ruler and rotary cutter. The method of cutting squares and sewing on the diagonal and then trimming the blocks afterwards is the fastest and best way for getting accurate finished blocks if you don't have a cutting machine. And it's a method that anyone can do whether an advanced sewist or beginner. Happy quilting!

It's a quicker way of sewing QST together. Look up sewing QST together on KZfaq and you'll see how it only takes two squares to make two 4" blocks at one time.
