Taking the time to have a look at this old town of Baker, Ca.
Traffic on I -15 moves faster and faster as time goes by. Travellers are less likely to stop in Baker, Ca. for rest, a sit down meal, or to rent a room for the night, than they were in decades prior When the main highway (old Ca. 95) was the only route from the Los Angeles area to Las Vegas, Nv. THis was a boom town! When Interstate 15 passed by, most travellers were still driving at a highway speed of 55 mph, maybe 65... At that rate, it still took a couple of hours of driving to reach Las Vegas, so drivers wanted to stop for sit down meals, rent a room for the night, or if needed, get car repairs. But these days, with travelers driving at 80 + MPH, they'er just in too much of a rush. Maybe they go time for a quick fill up with gas and a quick bite.

Stopped there last month and got gas at that station at 14:51. Also checked out the country store he showed at 14:50 and Alien Fresh Jerky down the street. Interesting little town. Was also surprised to see a road called "Zzyzx Road" nearby.

Old Bug Adventures Next time I drive to Las Vegas I’ll definitely stop off. I saw the Bun Boy motel and looked it up, and was led to a website that talked all about the history of the town and why it’s abandoned. Maybe I’ll go exploring next time!

I grew up there, all the places that are condemned now starting with the first station were all in business as I grew up. The first station seen its last days in late 70's, bun boy motel was still in operation 1998--sh but I moved away in 98 and started baker in 1973

Lee Wj I remember road trips I took in the 80’s and 90’s we’d always stop in Baker and eat here at Bun Boy. It’s slowly losing its charm with introduction of corporate fast food and travel centers.

Thanx for the tour, that old gas station is RAD !! should be restored..... old school, I dig the old Capri and maverick on the postcard ! hope all is well and looking foreward to more old bug adventures !!

In the 60's Pacific Telephone used to sent me to Baker, Shoshone, Tacopa Hot Springs, Death Valley Junction and Death Valley to service and collect the coin boxes from the payphones. We were based out of Buena Park and we would stay in Baker at the Bun Boy Motel which was called the "Golden Colla Motel" and the Bun Boy Restaurant was the old, original building, not the one in this video. I would go straight to Shoshone-Tecopa then on to Death Valley Junction and on to Furnace Creek Death Valley. I would head back to Baker in the afternoon at sometimes 130°, stripping down to my underwear and driving with the windows UP and only cracked to let the super heated air out without having blastfurnace-like air blowing on me. About a mile before getting to Baker I'd stop and put my clothes back on. Back in town, I'd check in at the Motel, clean up and have a steak dinner at the Bun Boy. The rooms didn't gave phone so I would walk over to the Shell station where the country store I'd now, and call my wife from the payphone outside the front door of the station that resembled the first abandoned station in the video. It had been 130° that one day at the visitor center in the Valley and I told my wife I couldn't describe what that was like. She asked me how it was at that time, about 8:30 pm and I said "not too bad now that it was dark". That's when I saw the old big round thermometer gas stations used to have back then and it read 118°.

Corrections: Golden CHOLLA and the rooms had not phones or windows you could see out of.

I actually stayed there in the 90s for one night on my way to Vegas. Went exploring the desert surrMounding Baker, using "Shortfuse" Mann's books as a guide. I saw the lava tube and some springs. It was fun and the town wasn't as bad as it is now. I guess all the Vegas traffic just blows right past and town went downhill. Too bad. May I suggest that you move the camera more slowly and not so many fast cuts. It makes me dizzy. Otherwise, great video

I actually stopped in the early nineties and ate at BunBoy. Interesting story, thanks for sharing. Where is the lava tube?
