This was a much appreciated video. I have long admired Dix, never really knowing the whole story of his fighting in WW I and what might arguably be one of the greatest socio-political anti war painters of modern times. I just saw the Academy Award winning film All Quiet On the Western Front which immediately brought Otto Dix to mind and again I returned to his work to reflect on. A profound talent and equally talented communicator. It’s no wonder the Nazi’s were fearful of him. His works speaks only the truth and horror of fascism and war.

I've seen the film too and it does make you understand why he reacted as he did.

@@ArtHistorySchoolI have a very tiny painting by him but it is not from his famous German Expressionist era... it is most likely after that when his life was in danger and he had to stop doing that kind of artwork . It's a lovely tiny Seascape and it's absolutely flawless , really perfect ... it almost looks like a color photo .

Very interesting artist, and the portraits of people were so sharp in detail. The eyes were very dark as if they had seen too much bad in their lives. As if they can't close their eyes to all the pain brought to their home land by war. Mr. Dix sure lived in interesting places in at the worst times.

Brilliant, literate presentation of a brilliant artist. His highly realistic depictions of war still resonate today. Der Krieg is the visual representation of Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun.

@@ArtHistorySchool Yes, check it out. JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN is (along with ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT) is one the the greatest anti-war books ever written. Dalton Trumbo was an extremely interesting character. Highly paid screenwriter and then blacklisted for his refusal to 'name names' before HUAC.

Great stuff as usual , what a time to be around . But not the most pleasant as they say , I’m often of a mind if only he had experienced a less volatile period of history . Yes of course we would be denied his sense of time , but his ability to paint is so fundamental that I struggle to condemn his ability just to circumstances of history . Best wishes and kind regards as always 😀👍👍👍

@@ArtHistorySchool I was the one who had to bail out after 8 minutes last time on the old version. You were very supportive. I’m sorry you had to redo it. But we all definitely need you. BTW, I did not report you to U-Tube, if one can do that, I was born in France and am very liberal in every sense when it comes to others. I worked in an art gallery on Via Monte Napoleone in Milan which specialized in Dada art (Arp/Duchamp) and studied sculpture with Marino Marini at Brera.🤸🏼 Well, sorry you had to redo, Sir, because all artists are not Renoir. We all look forward to your next masterful presentation. Thank you.

Difficult to like. I've read a lot about him and admire him as a painter, particularly the Weimar Era portraits. However, I can't say that I would miss much of his work if it suddenly disappeared. Much of it is just plain ugly and, quite frankly, off putting.
@ArtHistorySchool
@ArtHistorySchool Жыл бұрын
Yes, his art is difficult, but like all great artists he was very much influenced by the life around him, which for most of his life was ugly, horrific and extreme. He had a lot of guts to paint as he did. Cheers
