The Pantheon is the best preserved temple of Ancient Rome, but in this episode we'll explore some huge, structural rooms of the Pantheon (the grottoni) that are rarely accessed. Indeed, most people don't even know they exist! How is this possible? What purpose did they serve? Let's explore!
0:00 Introduction
1:14 Pantheon's secret rooms (the grottoes- grottoni)- floor plan; grottoni rooms and Basilica of Neptune: engineering necessities of Pantheon
4:13 Tour of the grottoni rooms
6:42 Pantheon brickstamps and Basilica of Neptune decorations
8:09 Grottoni vaulting
There is a lot of up to date scholarship on the grottoni. I direct you, in particular, to the work and publications of architectural historian Mark Wilson Jones, who has written extensively on the subject. I've had the privilege over the years to examine the Pantheon with him on location, alone and with students!
Keep up with the adventures of Darius Arya, the archaeologist with access. Ancient history in real life! He lives in Rome and is a practicing archaeologist and tv host. And great ready for a lot more travel: Jordan, Egypt, Croatia, and more!

I hear of "Rome" a lot, but it's difficult to think of it carefully, or in detail, as tourism implies a superficial understanding, of it, rather than a bit of study, a bit of rest, a bit of play

Gosh, Darius, that was so interesting! When it comes to ancient Rome and its history, that has so defined our 'western world' (along with ancient Greece and development of Christianity), you really deliver, with your insightful knowledge and your passion for narrating it. I've been to Rome only once (LOVED IT) so far, and while there saw the Pantheon, but had no idea of the substructure that has been an intrinsic part of this glorious edifice until watching this episode of yours right here. Thanks for making the ancient Roman world such an enriching experience for all of your viewers. Great job. Tracy Lindsey (Atlanta)

Thank you, Darius, for your reply. I'll stayed glued to your content and episodes. Knowing the 'roots' of one's civilization (in our case- ancient Greece and Rome- the 'west') is really a necessity, even to a better understanding of our current world today. Thanks again. Tracy

It's interesting that much of each artifice lives on, as rome gave us politics, or a way of doing it, maybe, that focuses it on proper things, and greece (ancient greece) ways of thinking about it, while all living it, and religions, maybe places to live, ways to 'breathe' or believe, and many cultures since
@chiptenor

A very well expressed thought, for sure. So many people don't even come close to realizing how 'interjected' our daily lives are with the ancient world, in so many ways.

May I ask you, and I'm probably not alone, how does the authorities inform the public about the days they open it ? Like we did with the Vatican for the under-crypt (you see what I mean) under St Peter. Is there a website ? Knowing how to get their calendar would help a lot. @@DariusAryaI was curious, can you say if it 100% original to when it was built. I just find it hard to believe it has been standing this long especially with the earthquakes/tremors Italy gets. Most old buildings have had substantial changes over the decades either to change it to keep up with the times or to replace decayed materials. It has always been my dream to visit this building one day. I love Italy as it has so much art and architecture. I hope one day soon I can join you as you truly have done your homework.

Thank you for the video. It's really impressive. Exploring the rooms you showed in the video, it came to my mind, that the structure had been rebuild many times. And before it looked totally different. For ex there are lots of laid arches. It seems, before the whole structure had looked more spacious and airy. And it also seems, that the Pantheon is much older structure than people believe. As the reason Romans used small plinth bars instead huge bricks of several tonns that the culture used before. The base of arches is more impressive than the material used after to fulfill the spaces to strengthen the structure.

That’s my favorite place in the world; you’ve got the amazing pantheon and this beautiful square. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Rome so who knows if they’re still there, but I would recommend getting a pizza and a bottle of wine on the corner closest and people watch. Then followed up with gelato on the far corner.

Very good documentary, but you're moving the camera too fast. I get dizzy and a little nauseous, and I can't see the detail because it blurs!

I agree, it's too busy. I would've enjoyed and understood more with a slower pace.

A lot of the best preserved temples in Rome are due to the fact that they were used- usually as churches... T. of Hercules, T. of Portunus, Curia, Temple of Antoninus Pius et Faustina-

I always wondered who lived up there in that building overlooking Patheon, with all the flowers on its large ballcony. So, it is you! Good forturne, Darius, good fortune.

I checked out the back when I was there; because architecture is one of my passions.
