Spring Solo Backcountry Paddle: Aubrey Falls - Wenebegon River Circuit Route

The plan for my solo spring trip (May 2019), would see me paddle 85km through Northeastern Ontario’s Algoma Highlands. Putting in on the Wenebegon River and Aubrey Lake, I would paddle south to the Mississagi river and the impoundment at Rocky Island Lake.
Once on Rocky Island, I head north east, paddling through an island studded landscape of exposed rocks and windswept pines. I would then journey north, up Seven Mile Bay, in search of an old portage that would take me over to the Wenebegon River. The downstream portion of my canoe trip would be marked by mainly placid waters, but the final 3 kilometres of the Wenebegon potentially offered some thrilling rapids, still flushing from the spring melt.

I remember the area before Aubrey Lake was created. There was a logging flume that bypassed Aubrey Falls. One could walk up the flume. The falls at that time could be seen from the flume. They were spectacular! Only a fraction of the water is now run over the falls now. There were many abandoned logging camps on Rocky Island Lake. Also an old abandoned tugboat pulled up on shore. Aubrey Lake inundated a lake known as “Trolling Lake” There were also abandoned logging camps here. One can find the basin of trolling lake using a fishing graph. I’m now 65. I saw the last log drives on the Mississagi in the early sixties. The best memories of my younger days! Thanks for the video. Dan Gottwald

Superb spring paddle trip. Glad your knee is healing up. It is truly nice to see younger generations interested in canoeing and getting away from the Fake Plastic modern life societies live today. Seeing you enjoying nature with such passion gives me hope the old art of graceful and style paddling open canoes will carry on. Canoeing is a lost art in the Southeastern US where I live. I am 58 and have paddled extensively in the Southeastern US. till paddling white water which is a blast just as you experience on this trip. keep it up.

Brad, thoroughly enjoying your videos. Lots of work getting some of those shots. Clearly it is working for you given the miles you have paddled, but you might think about modifying your "J" stroke. You seem to be using a reverse J stroke most of the time. Unless you have a wrist problem, twisting the paddle the other direction is actually more effective. Check it out, don't take my word for it. Keep the adventures coming! Really appreciate all the videos, great way to pass some isolation hours.

I like the extra effort you put into your editing too, it makes a real difference, that punching in to the shot where you were eating your dinner on the rock lakeside, nice subtle technique. Pretty cool when you can do a route and put in and take out in the same spot. Though I'd have some serious portaging to pull it off. It seemed like you had your legs out at the end. Do you have a low seat, or was it the camera, and you leaning back, that made your thighs look extra long? Surely you don't run rapids sitting up high on a regular seat?

Hey Brad, I'm a little confused by the stroke you are using in this video. You're obviously a powerful paddler, and an experienced canoist, but you appear to be using a so-called "gooney" in many strokes - for example at 4:15. I thought this is deprecated in favor of the J stroke. Maybe I'm not seeing this right...
@ExploreTheBackcountry
@ExploreTheBackcountry Жыл бұрын
River J or goon. Yes I did a lot of that this trip as it's powerful for WW maneuvering, you don't want to ever use a classic J in WW. You'll see some regular J on the flatwater, but it carried over a bit more than usual on this trip just due to the WW. Sometimes I also am guilty of lazily switching back to a goon... Which is likely what's going on here. This was about 3 or 4 years ago so I'm gonna say it was laziness as I made more of a conscious effort to use proper J's more often on flatwater on preceding years. Old habits die hard tho. There's some Canadian and rolling strokes too peppered throughout if you've got a keen eye.

Hey Susanna, you might not know me, but I spend a while editing trip videos (this video alone took 3 weeks to edit). I paddle about 70-100 days a year and edit slowly during the winter. I release videos months to years later (i.e our Rio Grande video was 3 years delayed), just look at my past released videos and the dates. I'm currently working on a Labour day trip and after that in the que is a 5 year old spring trip. If you require further proof, here is a whitewater short from the very same trip I posted 8 months ago: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ma1nd5uZvLaXhKs.html This is a shorter clip of the whitewater segment that begins at 15:30 of this video You can also check out my Instagram feed for all my trips. Check out this campsite shot posted 48weeks ago, it's the same one at 8:59 of this video: instagram.com/p/ByGCYLrBCQM/ Further, we're still iced in up here. Aubrey Lake has ice and snow in the bush and there's no way I could paddle it if I tried. I have nothing to gain by lying to you. We're stuck inside waiting this out and current trip plans have sadly been shelved.

I highly recommend the use of an adblocker extension. Understand where your coming from, but here's why I run ads: KZfaq has made it increasingly hard for small scale creators like myself to make any revenue off a production. The payout is well below minimum, typically a few cents per hour of filming and editing. For this video, at 8k views, this has turned into $32 of revenue. I likely spent about 72-120hrs editing this one - that's cents per hour. This helps pay a bit of the cost of our travels, equipment, own time, editing software and licences, website etc. We barely break even on paying for the technical fees alone. We'll look into an optional subscription service in the future as this may negate the need for mid-stream ads - we run far, far less than a TV program of the same length. Again, highly recommend you download and install an adblocker extension to your browsers if it is bothersome. This will stop adds on webpages and any KZfaq channel so you can watch without breaks. We'll absorb the monetary setback.
