The decorated metal piece is the front piece of a wood burning stove, Some called them parlor stoves. I am 76yr.old and my grandmother had a stove with a front almost exactly the same. Keep on exploring young man. I love watching you. You bring back memories of our youth.

Good point, probably used for summer cooking, canning, meat processing, clothes washing etc. In older times those types of sheds were also used to make soap, process maple syrup up North and molasses down South.

I am so hooked on this. You're doing such a great job. I hate they put in the different windows and the awful jalousie window panes in the door and window . Probably helped with circulation, but they're a security nightmare and ugly as sin. Really hope you find something period original to put in. Beings you're in the south, that building you just discovered recently given the age of the house was probably a summer kitchen that they also used for a wash house having firewood put under the lean-to. That's why it's so close to the house you'll probably find clothesline poles and a outhouse nearby.
