• I have been curious about African Black Soap for a long time. In this video, I use Bramble Berry's African Black Soap Kit and Quick Mix to make 2 Cold Process soap designs. I also discuss how to get a true black using activated charcoal. I give tips and tricks throughout this video, and as I cut my soap, I critique my designs. I'm all about learning here!

I miss the ac from EBB! It must be discontinued as I have been trying for months to get it. I can get a black with my hardwood ac at 1 tsp per cup of soap.

I use super fine coconut carbon (AC). I use it at a rate of 1.5 tsp per 500g of soap, I gel my soap and I get the blackest black.

Loved both the designs.. but yes, the swirl one looks more elegant! I used bamboo and coconut activated Charcoal and found coconut one gives a better black color from less and hence, less bleeding. Ever since have been using coconut shell activated charcoal to color my soaps. I loved the saying too much collor makes it a circus... That is so true 😂 i echo with the idea of less is more in the context of colors 🙂 thank you for sharing the video. I missed your videos as this one came in after a long gap.. hope we have more videos from you! I find yours is one of the very few quality soap making channels here and eagerly wait for any new uploads ❤️ cheers and stay blessed 🙂

I believe the difference in charcoal is due to particle size. The european cosmetics regulation differentiates between black carbon and black carbon as a nanomaterial. You should be able to get the particle size from the safety data sheet provided by the supplier. The finer the charcoal, the more black the soap will appear. Bigger particles contribute to a grainyness and more of a grey color (or you need to just use more of the charcoal for a true black). Also I noticed a big difference in color depending on whether you disperse the charcoal before incorporating it in the soap batter.

This is my absolute #1 dream soap. The shay butter, the essential oils, the texture, color, feel, the amazing qualities of African black soap with the hugely hydrating shay butter…I would use this daily in the winter here on the coast! Love this so much! Unplanned masterpiece :D

WHAATTTT! Your art teacher said too much colour is a circus? I thought art was in the eye of the beholder better yet, in the eye of the artist!! Does that mean Monet was not only painting without glasses but painting a circus too?? HECK NO!! 🤷‍♀️ Your soaps turned out beautifully!! I'm impartial to the swirls and I love LOTS of colour too! Don't stunt your growth because someone thinks differently than you!!

I bought activated charcoal on amazon in a 22 oz plastic jug w lid. Its brand is Marineland & its very reasonable - designed for aquarium filters. I bought it for shoe polish recipes & my 1st try I put it in a mortar & pestle then put it through a fine sieve. Next time I will buzz it in my electric coffee grinder till very fine & sieve it.

I use Anthony’s Activated Charcoal which is from hardwood. I have been eye-balling it so much I’m not sure exactly how much I use but it is probably closer to 2 tsp PPO. I’m a new-ish soap maker (started doing cold process in Dec) and so happy to see you back. Your videos have been such a huge help and amazing source for inspiration. Thanks to you I’m trying ALL the techniques and having so much fun!

1) SOOOOOO happy you said to NOT use glass for making your Lye Solution. 2) I don’t like Activated Charcoal; I prefer Black Oxide or Black Mica. 3) I like both of these soaps.

Sorry for leaving so many comments but I just have to say I am so excited to see your Blue Ridge Mountain soap! It reminds me of my home state in North Carolina. I hope your holidays were great and I hope your 2022 is fabulous! Happy soap making and thank you for the beautiful videos that are also incredibly helpful even though I have never made soap once in my life. I’m an encaustic painter and soap kinda has a similar vibe to beeswax, tree saps and pigments.

What you say about charcoal is super interesting... Mine is hardwood and very, very fine. I do get a true black but I have to use a lot : 4 g per pound of oils, which would be just shy of 1 tbsp ppo. I don't have to gel the soap to get a true black at this rate, and the soap bubbles are a little gray but don't stain.

As soon as you posted on your FB page that you had a new video, I jumped over to watch it. This video is so great in so many ways. I LOVE that how you got this Brambleberry kit and showed how to use everything in it, the problem solving when things didn't go according to plan, the discussion on charcoal/black colorants. I actually got the smooth coconut carbon back when you mentioned it in a previous video. If it's hard to come by, I guess I'll have to hoard it. Beautiful soap. I like the one with the lighter black that shows the character of the ingredients more; it's so unified. Of course, when I went to BB, the kit is sold out, so I'll have to wait. I've been a fan of African Black Soap for years, so this is exciting to me. Welcome back, I just love your videos.

Super excited to see you making videos again! 🥰 When I want a true black soap, I'll do a blend of Bramble Berry's black oxide with my activated charcoal derived from coconut. I usually find my activated charcoal in the vitamin section of my local grocery store, and I've seen it at other stores that are more "organic-heavy" as well! I don't know if that's helpful to anyone or not, depending on how comfortable you are using oxides

I use hardwood charcoal because I got it when I was first starting. I didn't know there was a difference! LOL Anyway I get a very black black with it . I was always puzzled why people where having a problem with it. I have never used coconut charcoal. So I don't know why it works. Love your videos!

Thank you for this activated charcoals lesson. I used the the coconut kind before cam got a real black. I couldn’t find it locally. I got the hardwood kind from bramble berry super large container and I have a very hard time getting a true black. I haven’t used it all but it usually is a more gray. I tried gelling and it never really got super black. I gave up as a soap maker and was not sure why I had good luck that one time and I didn’t want to buy more activated charcoal to be let down. I was actually thinking about switching to oxide.

BTW, I now use charcoal very sparingly; just to get a little swirl through a light colored soap. From customer feedback and from personal experience, the charcoal tends to "bleed", discoloring the bath towel and the bath tub. What has been your experience?

I use coconut shell charcoal and it is definitely darker... I use 1 tsp per pound - that doesn't given me a totally black bar as I'm always afraid of black suds - but I think 1 1/2 tsp would absolutely be plenty.

Most African Black Soap is unscented, but mine is scented with a lovely Lavender and Patchouli Essential Oil. It goes very well with the unrefined natural ingredients.
