There's something so aesthetic and somber about being in an abandoned place like that. The history that occurred and the people that were once there aren't there anymore. You can never go back to that time but only try to understand it..

Yes, one feels the history. I imagine busy with activity, people coming and going, Smells and noises from dining room. How long was it open? I would like to know. 50 years? A hundred? How the world must have changed. Why did it close? Usually when enrollment drops below sustainability. Why? If I knew the name of it I would look it up, but I am sure, for its protection, they kept that confidential.

personally i love it when old buildings like this have strange additions like wood panel walls and exterior windows on the inside and dropped office ceilings. Its not aesthetically pleasing but it is a neat way that buildings communicate their stories. Every questionable midcentury sconce, nicotine stained 70’s wallpaper, or hideous 80’s carpet betrays the soul of the building.

The chains in the front of the grandfather clock hold weights. The weights turn springs, that provide energy to the clock mechanism.

Actually the weights were used before springs. Gravity pulls on the chain which goes around a gear (sprocket) that puts pressure on the escapement mechanism which releases the mechanism one click at a time, which is "paced" by the pendulum rocking back and forth. Raise the pendulum and the clock goes faster. Lower it, the clock goes slower. If that clock is in working condition, and not a modern reproduction, it is worth a lot. It looks near mint. If it is electric and the chain and pendulum are non functioning (for show) not worth much at all. I didn't see any weights.

When he asks “what language is this” 8:12 it is an Adinkra symbol created by the Ashanti people. The Morning Star is placed within the wheel to give the meaning “Change or transform your character”. The Morning Star represents a new day or a new start to the day, whilst the wheel represents continuous forward independent movement. If you look carefully you can see other Andinkra symbols on some of the other plaques, with other meanings. This room was maybe a place of quiet reflection but that is just my guess.

As a kind of subject matter expert do you have any idea what this place is, like what religion? I'm an atheist so I'm not really familiar with religious symbols so the ones at 8:00 looked like some kind of cult thing at first. Turns out they're Adinkra symbols from Ghana, but it's snowing by this building so it's obviously not filmed in West Africa. Those symbols just seemed really out of place here. Edit: So at the very end of the video, the motto Deus meus et Omnia seems to point to some group called "Franciscans"

I don't get why those institutions and companies never sell off their stuff when they give up a location. It's not like they had to flee in a hurry due to war or such thing. There's so many thousands of dollars of valuable materials left behind that will be taken over by the elements over time.

No educational institution is a “charitable” institution. They may educate those who go into charitable work, but you’re making a leap assuming the educational institution is set up for that purpose as well. More than likely no one wanted this place. THAT’S why it is abandoned.

It is very interesting that you often find old pipe organs in the abandoned buildings you explore. I would caution you though not to put the pipes in your mouth since the metal pipes are a mixture of lead and tin. Even the boots on the wood pipes are made from the same metals. Thoroughly washing ones hands after handling those pipes is a must. I wish you would have shown the organ console that sat at the other end of the room from where the piano was. The pipe you blew into at 9:42 creates it sound by the wind vibrating a metal reed located in the boot. Those tend to be voiced on higher wind pressure than the wood ones and are therefore significantly louder. Do keep up your exploration and take all precautions.

The book at 24:23 isn't growth, unless you are looking at something I'm not seeing. But the blue and gold on the paper, is from an art technique called 'Water Marbling.' They would put paint on the surface of the water, distort it with a toothpick, and dip the paper in it. It's still quite common to see people who are into book binding create such a look for custom book's endpapers...among other things. It's also done with cloth as well, mainly seen it on silk. But I don't see much of that done anymore like it use to long ago. Beautiful video though. That place was amazing! I so love Art Deco. 14:30 I'm by no means an expert, but the first interpretation of the relief sculptures of the birds I have is that an Eagle typically represents strength and power, the "pigeon" might actually be a dove, which is a representation of the Christian God, but also doves are a representation of love and peace. Finally, the owl, a representation of knowledge and wisdom. And the fact that these representations are all of birds, probably relates to their ability to fly, flight represents freedom. If that building was always a college, and that room always a library, then those sculptures of the Eagle, the Dove and the Owl make perfect sense, because an education fills you with knowledge and wisdom, which allows you to wield strength and power with the temperament of love and peace...all of this can liberate one's soul or very existence, and lift them out of poverty. ...or the architect could have just been a bird fanatic.

I used to work in a medical library facility that was of that same vintage. I remember the 4024 paper, maybe they even had the xerox 5053 copier, that video switcher was interesting -I wonder if they were routing video to classrooms or from them...

at 10:37 the clock actually doesn't need a source of power (electronically that is), it has weights attached to those chains you see and the weights are what essentially powers the clock. After some time you will have to pull on the chains to raise the weights back up because they gradually go down from powering it if that makes any sense.

Hey there guys, Brian asked what language was on the sign on the wall. At first, it looked like the "stations of the cross" a Catholic thing, I googled it and it's this Sesa Woruban SESA WORUBAN (I change or transform my life) This symbol combines two separate adinkra symbols, the "Morning Star" which can mean a new start to the day, placed inside the wheel, representing rotation or independent movement.

Awesome video!!! It made me wax nostalgic of my own school days. :) :) Yet, it's such a waste to have left behind all those library books after the school had closed down when they still would have been very, very useful and would have served some purpose for those in the general public who have an interest in such subject matter.
