The video was shot in Rutherford New Jersey along the old abandoned Erie Main Line.
This section of the line runs from the Rutherford Junction, where the Erie's main line forked from the Bergen County, crossing the Passaic River on a now demolished Drawbridge. After crossing the river, the line headed westward along what is now Route 21and passed through the center of Downtown Passaic, New Jersey, before joining up to what is now NJ Transit's Main Line in Paterson. That small section between Clifton and Paterson is still in service and used by Norfolk Southern.
At the now Dufunct Jackson Ave railroad crossing sits the former site of the Carlton Hill train station.
Carlton Hill Station was a former railroad station for the Erie Railroad in the Rutherford, New Jersey. Carlton Hill station was the second station along the Erie's main line and the first station after Rutherford Junction where the Erie branched off from the Bergen County Line.
Carlton Hill Station opened in 1888 on Jackson Avenue and namesake Erie Avenue in Rutherford. The station was served by the main line until 1963, when the Passaic Plan was undertaken, removing tracks at Passaic Park, Passaic, Clifton, and Lake View stations. At that point, the nearby drawbridge was permanently swung open and later removed, leaving a branch to Carlton Hill. For the next few years, Carlton Hill received deadhead trains and a rare Carlton Hill - Rutherford - Hoboken Terminal train schedule. In 1966, when several underused branches, including the Carlton Hill, lost service, the old main line alignment to Carlton Hill was abandoned. The tracks remain, though the building is gone.
Half of this line looks like it has been turned into a nature trail, but the tracks remain intact, overgrown, but are still visible.
Enjoy!!!

That line was abandoned 50 years ago. That was due to the E-L stopping service thru Passaic. Main Avenue has a parking lot where the tracks were. That's when Passaic died.

I walked this line from the crossing as far as could be walked toward the Passaic River. It gets to a point where you can't walk because of the brush. This line crossed the Passaic River, ran along Main Ave in Passaic and headed to Paterson. The other end in Paterson is still active to a little past Crooks Avenue (or is that Clifton) to some sort of plant that gets a bunch of box cars. The tracks head toward Passaic for a while longer. I walked that part too. I remember a nail with a 1958 marking on it at that point which may give a hint of when the last maintenance was done on this section. The totally missing section appears to be through Passaic. Very nice video. Thanks.

I walked that line beside Memorial Fields to the Passaic River as a child. The rotating bridge, demolished in the 1960s IIRC, was on a round concrete base but no longer connected to the line. Construction across the river ended any need for it. My mother used to commute to Newark by train after WWII. Some of the local bridges were steam operated and very expensive to run not least because they required a qualified engineer. There's more info on Erie etc railfan sites.

So neat to see this! Between 1955 and 1959, I commuted to high school in Manhattan from my home in Ho-Ho-Kus. I am very familiar with the stretch of track that you guys walked in this vid. This is what's left of the Erie Main Line (believe it or not) in this part of Bergen. All local trains as well as Chicago-bound expresses used to come through here. You are correct in figuring two tracks.[Express trains generally used the Bergen County Line which turned north at the junction near where this video started (jest west of the Rutherford station). In the mornings, I would take express trains but on most days, I would make the return trip on the 3:27pm - first from Jersey City then, after the Lackawanna merger, from Hoboken. It was a very slow run. After Rutherford, we would move down your track(s) to a little-used stop at Carlton Hill. There was a big commercial building to the north of the tracks at the stations. Then we'd cross a bridge over the Passaic River, stopping almost immediately at a station in a park, called Passaic Park. Then we'd wend our way on up come down the main street in Passaic. We'd eventually get into Ho-Ho-Kus about 4:15pm. I can still almost hear the clanging of the bells on the old Erie Alco switchers that were a mainstay of their commuter trains. When they switched to the Lackawanna tracks to Paterson and killed this section, it looks like they tore up one set of tracks and continued to use the single remaining track a while longer. I don't remember exactly when stopped using this section for regular traffic but it was more than 40 years ago. Thanks for a nice bit of nostalgia. John King

Thank You for history! I always been fascinated by this line. I remember seeing in the late 90's, the Jackson Ave crossing activate with the old Erie crossing signals, it was being tested i was assuming, never saw a train though. I know NS used these tracks up to around 2006 ish (i could be off by a few years) and they own this line now, but don't use it. Would have been great to see a train use this again, but since they got rid of the bridge over the river, that was it. Shame.

Kenneth Sloan Yes, I used the old Jersey City station for about a year-and-a-half after I started High School. I used to take the Hudson Tubes (now PATH) to 14th Street in Manhattan where my high school was located. The Hudson Tubes station is still there but it's name is changed to Pavonia Avenue ( although the letter 'E' for the old Erie Station still is in the plaster of the columns in that station). There was quite a long walk from the Hudson tubes station to the Erie tracks themselves. I remember running that distance many times in an effort to catch a train. I even rode the old Jersey City ferries to Chambers Street on a few occasions. And of course I remember the old railroad tunnel through the Bergen arches. It used to tell me that I only had a few minutes before I had to leave the train in the morning. I see remnants of that whenever I take the train down to Hoboken and crossover the old right-of-way for the Erie. My parents lived in Hohokus until 2009 when they died and now I hardly ever get back to that area.

I lived about 6 blocks from here. Before the Erie Main Line through Passaic was abandoned, I rode trains on this line from the Carlton Hill station a number of times. After the Erie Main Line through Passaic was abandoned, the E-L ran 2 commuter trains in each direction from & to Carlton Hill station at Jackson Av. These ceased in 1966 when a lot of other trains, including all Newark Branch service and Greenwood Lake Branch service from Mt. View to Wanaque-Midvale, were annulled. The Carlton Hill branch trains were an unusual operation. The line was still double track, with the westbound track modified to run into the eastbound track. After unloading its passengers, the westbound train would pull ahead near to where the track joined the eastbound track. The engine would cut off, run onto the eastbound track, and then run light to Rutherford. There it would switch to the westbound track and run back past Carlton Hill to its train. It coupled up, ran an air test, shoved onto the eastbound track, and then ran to Hoboken, where the trainset was stored.

Unless my memory is failing me, I think that ROW was the original Paterson and Hudson River RR ROW. Starting from where St. John Cathedral stands today in Paterson, to Jersey City. And, you are right. That became in like the 1850s, the Main Line Erie Railroad from Suffern, NY to Jersey City.

After departing downtown Passaic, the Jersey City-bound Erie train would pass the Anderson Lumber yard and an orphanage once visited by Babe Ruth. It would slip between two still existing walls between Main Avenue and Passaic Stadium (now Boverini Stadium). The tracks hooked left to between Aycrigg Avenue and Westervelt Place at the Passaic Park station where today are the Parkside Manor condominiums and Schevchenko Park. The rail bridge crossed River Drive long before Route 21 was built, and the tracks continued behind Rutherford’s Memorial Park and its ball fields. P.S. The Passaic River’s bed was where Route 21 is now and was diverted just enough east of River Drive to allow for the highway.

In April of 1963, the Erie tracks were pulled out of downtown Passaic. The bridge trestle was razed and, on the other side of the Passaic River, the tracks ended or began at the chemical plant at 2 Carlton Avenue, now Star Glo Rubber. Until July 1966, trains continued on what became the Carlton Hill Branch. At 6:37, we are told that we’ve arrived at Jackson Avenue. In fact, this is Carlton Avenue. Jackson begins a few feet to our left, just over West Erie Avenue (the Rutherford Car Wash at 5 Jackson Avenue). The line used to cut just behind the Rutherford baseball diamonds, over the bridge and along between Westervelt Place and Aycrigg Avenue, Passaic. From there, it hooked right and ran through a space (still extant) between Main Avenue and Passaic Stadium, now Boverini Stadium. In the video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptuKds6GydKpiqM.html) the Passaic-bound train crosses the bridge from Carlton Hill, and makes the turn to downtown Passaic. The next cut shows the train leaving downtown and heading East towards Carlton Hill, passing the Anderson Lumber yard at 10:00. At 10:03, the train enters Passaic from Carlton Hill and runs west, past the Central Theater and the Erie station. At 10:18, the train passes east at Park Place, Passaic. At 10:32, she is again heading west, on East Main Avenue, passing the People’s Bank, then the highest structure at 663 Main Avenue, and the Montauk Theater. At 10:44, we see a mail car.

+Freedomtowerman Productions. Love the vid of the old rail lines... I used google maps to look at where you explored as I live in FL... I remember when I'd go up to NJ to visit my grandparents, my g'pa would take us to a line one block over from their house and we'd walk the tracks. It's wasn't a very busy line even back in the 80's. It's been abandoned for quite some time now but I know there was a trestle or two that were still there when I last visited in '11. If you are interested in checking it out, it's in Springfield, NJ. You can see the remnants of the line on google maps. It extends from I-78 SE to Union to what looks like a wye for other branches. This address where the old Springfield Station is still standing (there's a business in it now) is 195 Mountain Ave, Springfield Township, NJ 07081. I remember from that point, if you travel SE you'll come to a small trestle crossing a brook, then if you keep going you cross Meisel Ave. then shortly after, a bigger trestle going over the Rahway River. I'm sure it's severely overgrown, but if you're up for the challenge... I noticed you said something about having to catch a train, so I assume you travel that area by train. If so, I believe the closest NJ Transit station is Short Hills Station. Then a 1.8 mile walk to the old Springfield Station... I don't know the history of this line at all and would be kool to find out about it if anyone knows about it....

It's unusual to find abandoned rail right of ways that haven't had the trackage pulled up in the southeastern part of the US, where I live, particularly in urban areas. If you care to look closely, you may be able to find the lead date tags that were nailed every so often on the wooden ties that will give the railroad's name and the date that the ties were set. These lead date tags are usually round and about the size of a 25 cent piece. They are highly collectable and some are valuable. Another thing to look for is a date that is applied to the side of the rails themselves. Each individual length will have manufacturers info that will include the date of manufacture embossed into them. The date tags and the info on the rails will give you an idea of the track's history. Thanks for the interesting video. You've gained a new subscriber.

It looked to be in just as bad shape in 1999 when I qualified the Bergen County as it does now. In 1999 that would not have been used for about a year or so...at THAT, but it was very much deteriorated THEN. The video has sparked my interest!

No, this used to be part of the old Erie Railroad Main Line that connected from NJ Transit's Bergen County Line, ran straight through downtown Passaic NJ and went into Paterson and continued from there to Ridgewood Junction where it joined back up with the Bergen County Line. When the main line was re-aligned, this portion was abandoned by Erie, and then later NS. Norfolk Southern still owns this line, and west of the Jackson Ave crossing (whats left of it), its a dirt train with the old rails and is somewhat maintained, this portion is not maintained at all and is owned by NS

This is a pretty recent picture of Rutherford. I wonder if anyone has any pictures of the square back in the 1970's, when Orient Way use to have two old row houses and off of Mountain way, there was a small area, called HIPPIE HILL, where there use to be a liberty bell, were we use to enter the woods and hang out, drinking and smoking pot. There was at least 50 feet of woods before they tore down most of the woods to make two apartment buildings. Even Park ave. was way different back then. How many of you remember the Rutherford Sporting goods store, on the corner of Agnew pl, which is now a bank, or directly across the street, the pharmacy was there, which is now an Italian restaurant. Or the florist on the corner right next to Forest Dairy, and next to that is (amazingly, they are STILL in business after over 40 years), the Western store, and next to that use to be the Mandy's. I remember that specifically because I remember one Saturday night doing a tab of THC (that was the rage back then), then sitting down in front of the door of the Mandy's, closing my eyes and waking up like two hours later. People would come from all over the tristate area to go to Rutherford, thanks to a certain disc jockey, who happened to mention over the air, that Park Ave, Rutherford was THE place to be! Also, REAL rock concerts in Lincoln Park where the cops would line the outside of the park and listen to the music while we drank and smoked joints. You could always find some roaches in the bandshell if you looked from people who smoked joints in the bandshell. But that ended in 1980, when they started cracking down on all the fun. Anyone else remember these things?

Yeah, that's right. All those row houses, condominiums, are on capped soil to cover all the chemicals. They are up the block and across the street from another factory that was razed some time back, but they haven't decided what they will put on their yet. That property runs right next to the railroad tracks that come from Rutherford, into E. Rutherford, and on to upstate NY.

I didn't know it was going to be pixelated until I watched it... so please,it is poor quality and unbecoming of a 'Production Company' and does merit my comment 'damn unpleasant viewing'.
