Join John and me as we explore a pre-Civil War (pre-1860's) abandoned bank barn. It was built in the style of the old German traditions for this area. We discover many interesting things, and see that the barn is close to falling over as it is leaning precariously to one side.

That video just breaks my heart. I can still hear the animals moving around, the sound of evening chores, the milk hitting the bucket, the hay being dragged down the aisles with pitchforks and shoved into the feeders. I can hear the uproar of hungry animals, the cattle, the workhorses shifting and stomping and pawing as they wait impatiently for dinner. I can hear the hens underfoot, complaining as they get shoved out of the way, the pigs squealing and banging. The chatter of the family as they work their way down the aisles, either taking the animals to water, or carrying water to them, cleaning the stalls and setting them fair, grain hitting the feed troughs, hay being thrown down the ladders. I guess I'm the last generation to really know that experience, and it hurts me for my child, who will never know it.

I like old buildings like this. I like the craftsmanship that went into the woodworking, like the joining of two beams. The way they cut it at an angle and drilled and pegged the joint with wooden pegs. I hope someone salvages the wood out of the barn before demolition. Great video.

I have some still photos of my great-grandfather's barn in Mississippi. Built around 1835. No nails. Big wooden pegs.By the time I made it back there, it had fallen in due to neglect. His family cemetery was across the road. The house where he raised 2 stepdaughters and 13 of his own kids was also partly there. He also raised some of his brother's kids (he married their mother, his brother's widow and we have the Pre-nuptial agreement, and was legal guardian to 3 kids of distant relative of his wife. He used to "doctor" using folk remedies and Choctaw medicines. Few real doctors in that place and time. The whole county called him "uncle" for his do-gooder ways.

We purchased an old virgin cork pine 150+ year-old barn to build our own kitchen cupboards for our 160+ year-old farm house. They were going to just tear it down and leave it to rot until we came along. We love our barn-wood kitchen. We used the hand-hewn beams with the wooden pegs on the ceiling and a large beam for the step into our 160 year-old bricked floor and 1/2 way up breakfast nook with an antique wood cooking stove. We used the round wood barn timbers and the hayloft boards for the breakfast nook ceiling. Of course we had to treat the wood for any insects prior to bringing it inside and sealed it with Verythone. Oak barn wood was too hard to drive nails into it, so when we located the virgin cork pine wood barn, we were more than ecstatic. That was about 40 years ago and we still love it.

Never jumped off the walls but as kids my friends and I would build tunnels and rooms inside the hay in the barn. Pulling out bales and making more and more structures. Each year our creations were destroyed as the hay was used. Dad's one rule was don't you ever smoke in the barn. We never let him down.

In Vermont, the dairy farms would put the cows on the upper level for milking and the lower level is where the manure would be kept. There would be openings thru the floor to facilitate passage of the poo and in the spring the manure would be loaded into spreaders and distributed on the fields. Also, back then, the cows were pastured in the fields, would return to the barn at milking time and the farmers kept the cows in the barn for the duration of the winter. Exactly the opposite of modern lots.

I love the old barns. I grew up with many of my uncles & aunts living on farms, but in Minnesota, I'm not sure we even have anything this old. I ?helped (LOL) with a barn raising over 60 yrs ago (closer to 70) and was amazed at how fast they were able to build a new barn. Great video, Beau. Thanks.

What a nice adventure! It is always interesting to hear what you know about the places and things you see. I love old barns as I lived on a large wheat and cattle ranch in my teens. Sadly the old barns are gone now that I once worked and played in, they burned to the ground years ago. Your video's sure stir up a lot of long forgotten memories. Thanks a million. I do hope that the wood can be salvaged, it would be a shame to see it just bulldozed. Too bad it is so far gone, it would make a lovely building if restored. The neighborhood could use it to hold a quilt shop or country co-op for produce, or any other number of businesses. I do wish developers hand a better sense of history and would invest in restoring old buildings, instead they just wipe out history without a thought..

I was very excited to see this video of yours. I do some work with reclaimed wood and I can tell you, that barn is loaded with "very" valuable wood beams and boards. Also people pay a lot of money to get their hands on old wood like that. I don't know if you know the owner, but if you do you should tell them to get in touch with someone from your area that buys old barns like that and dismantles them and recycles the wood to build things for rich people that have the kind of money to do a project like this. For more info about the kinds of things people do just watch the TV show "Barn wood Builders" and you will understand what I am talking about. Again another great video that I enjoyed thoroughly .

i love old barns, when i was a kid we would break into and party in a barn that had a covered 66 impala, keys on the dash. awesome car in amazing condition, i gained the courage to go to the door, admit breaking in years before and ask to buy it. I was 18 and saved $4000 for that car to find out she called a junk removal company to take it away. she told me her husband died in the 72 and it sat since reminding her of him. broke my heart but so many good memories in her barn. also always keep an eye open for barn owls.

Another big reason they built those ramp barns was to place them sideways to the prevailing wind. Then they would open the doors on both sides and toss the wheat into the air and the wind would blow the chaff out the door on the other side.

Barns are fascinating. In Southern New Jersey, the were generally square and 2 story.. Occasional bank barns were around but only in the hilly regions. Hay was lifted with an insustrial sized hay frk and pulley contraption. Corn cribs were built adjacent to the barns tractor entrance. A large dairy at thhat time would be 30-40 cows. I remember my Grandmother had 2,000 laying hens. Considered a large amount then. I am sorry t see the agricultural heritage erode peice by peice but progress is inevitable. Whe I was a lad Prime level acreage was $100 and acre and woodland $40-$60 depending on what timber covered it. I recall a 100 acre farm with an 18th Century house and Barn selling for $12,000! I relish your Winter Videos, Caves, Upland Explorations, Finding STUFF and Oh My!

I had no idea round nails were made that early, but doing a quick google search it says the nail cutting machine was invented between 1790 and 1820. I have found six square nails in my back yard just with my eyes (I don't have a metal detector.) I know there was a river crossing ferry building here 100 or so years ago and always figured the square nails came from that, but maybe not. The only thing remaining of the ferry building now is a few brick pads in the ground.

Call the Barn wood Builders and ask them to come and take this down. They make beautiful new homes from barn wood. If you know the owners ask them to contact these guys. They'll be happy to come take it down, and safely. They will travel to get the wood and remove it and offer a price for it also. They have a show on a DIY network. Please save the chestnut!
