Join us as we take a late night walk through Harlan Kentucky. Harlan's had songs wrote about it, it was featured in the hit television series Justified, it's had movies made about it like the academy award-winning documentary Harlan County USA it's the most famous town in Appalachia, possibly in America, now you can take a late night walk with us and see what it's like after midnight.

Somewhere, off the main street on a side street there's an old brick building. Years ago I was working for an awning company in Johnson City. Our crew traveled to Harlan to install a flat " w" pan awning on that building. We did good work. I actually like Harlan and found the locals to be very friendly. Good country folks!

ah i love KY so much! i'm from Clark county originally, but i live in Estill county now, in the mountains and lovin every minute of it. Winchester used to be a small town, but its grown up a little, now its basically a suburb of Lexington. i like the hollers a little better honestly. great video! there's a lot of cool stuff around, its such a great state to live in.

You guys ought to meet up with some of us now old timers (born in the 60s) and do a walkabout in downtown to reminisce about when Harlan was full of people, business and (mis)adventure! Or meet up with a few folks for an afternoon porch talk!!

Wow! some oldtimers from the 60s. Wonder just what that makes me? I was born in Harlan in 1945 and lived there in Harlan County...Baxter and Loyall until 1956. At that time the place was alive.

So nice to see Harlan. My Grandma lived across from Mt. Pleasant funeral home. Remember alot of the places there. Still miss that place i lived sooo many. Years ago❤❤❤❤

Street lights will go off sometimes when you walk under or near them because the light sensor is reading a reflection off you... something shiny or light color on you.

Is there anyone left to interview from the documentary "Harlan County USA"? I watched the segment that you did on the old mine. I am wondering about the people involved with the documentary 50 years later and how long their UMWA local was sustained in the area.

Duke Power sold their Brookside mine property (and the others on Clover Fork) to Manalapan Mining not too many years after the strike ended. If memory serves, it was about the time of the big flood of 1977. The new company was owned by a local non-union operator. The union’s local died then because they were not recognized. Someone tried to revive it thru a drive for members at Manalapan in the mid-80s, but nothing came of it. Brookside was used by Manalapan mostly for its tipple and offices. The actual mine there was mostly non-producing. It’s been derelict for a very long time.

How do you tell a good town from a bad town? After midnight you don't have worry having your life threatened by the riffraff walking down the street. Too bad we don't have more towns like this.
