We were wrong about Beijing... We expected a super interesting but massive, smoggy and overly crowded capital. What we did NOT expect (or even ever hear about before we left!) are its charming hutong; mazes of timeless, narrow lanes that will make you feel like you've found the real, quirky Chinese heart of the city. There's no better way of exploring Beijing before we hunt down the best Peking duck in town. Ready for a Beijing hutong tour?

Naick & Kim There is a stone pillar in the Lama Temple that inscribed a Qing Dynasty emperor announcement to the people explaining Tibet issue and why he conducted religious reforms in Tibet. In which he said, in order to better manage Tibet, he learned their language and religion and culture. He changed that place to Lama temple to promote religious studies, better communication and mutual understanding. Dalai Lamas used to stay there when they came to Beijing to visit the emperors. So that place was an imperial thing. If you want to see lamas, you could travel to Shangri la, Seda or Tibet. By the way, what is interesting in that article on that stone, the emperor said he was trying to figure out where the word Lama came from and he actually did not believe the reincarnation thing of the lamas. But he couldn’t just abolish the lamas and the religious idea, then those Tibetans would be like homeless children because they are so religious. He also said his reform would not solve a lot of existing problems of the religious ruling but could improve it a little bit.

The Lama Temple is located in the northeast corner of Beijing. Emperor Kangxi built a mansion here in 1694. He gave four princes, Prince Yong, to be called Prince Yong Mansion. Yongzheng three years (1725), the palace was changed to the imperial palace, called Yonghe Palace. In the thirteenth year of Yongzheng (1735), Emperor Yongzheng collapsed and once parked the coffins here. Therefore, the original green glazed tiles in the main palace of Yonghe Palace were replaced by yellow glazed tiles. Because Emperor Qianlong was born here, Yonghe Palace left two emperors and became the "Lung Qianfu Place", so the palace is Huangwa Red Wall, the same size as the Forbidden City Palace. In the ninth year of Emperor Qianlong (1744), the Yonghe Palace was transformed into a Lama Temple. The Minister of prime minister's affairs was appointed to manage the affairs of the Palace without a fixed member. It can be said that Yonghe Palace was the highest Buddhist temple in China in the middle and late Qing Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, the great living Buddha of Mongolia and Tibet came to Beijing, and there was an office in Beijing. There are three kinds of pavilions. One is the "Buddhist Canopy of the Inner City Monastery". That is to say, there is a monastery of its own in the capital city. Like the Songzhu Temple in Di'anmen, it is the Buddhist storehouse of Zhangjia Living Buddha. The second is the "Buddhist warehouse of the out-of-town temple", such as the Houhei Temple outside the Desheng Gate, which is the Buddhist warehouse of the living Buddha of Chakhandar Khan. Thirdly, "Giving Buddha a a residence" means that he has no monastery in Beijing and needs to live for a long time because of his position, and his position is also related to Yonghe Palace. He will reward a courtyard in or near Yonghe Palace, which belongs to Yonghe Palace.

Do you mean Rob & Jenny? Yes we did see that video too. Well I did some research on good places to eat Peking Duck that are affordable and this name keeps coming up. If I remember correctly, we paid around 160 or 180 yuan for one duck. While at other places it is a lot more (250+). This is probably the reason why it is popular. When we went there, it was pretty full every time. The other food they have is also very good.

Usually any asian food you have in western countries are not only NOT authentic flavour but super pricey as well. So when I visit asian countries, I don't usu try western food there or junk food like macDonald. Conversely, when I visit western countries, I don't even bother to go into any asian eatery unless it's been highly recommended. Always go local and discover interesting gourmet at local prices.

Alpacas (cousins of llamas) are actually popular pets in China's middle class now - they arose from a viral internet meme after the Party attempted to try and ban cursing on the net ('mud grass horse' is a homynym of a poular curse 'f*** your mother'). The 'mud grass horse' is a mythica animal but the alpaca was used in the pics - it even coined fake nature documentaries, toys, t-shirts and of course the real thing. I would've LOVED to have seen you guys come across an alpaca sticking its head out of car widow, which is somethig you sometimes see. qz.com/304268/why-china-is-now-banning-puns/

all info you've read about China in Western Media is biased at some level.

All info you read in any media are biased, I would say. It is difficult to be objective as the cultures and values are quite different. But yes, reporting about China is usually done from a 'certain view'. The same goes actually for reporting about the USA in Europe. Probably vice versa, it is the same.
