Interesting that. Possibly more the *Nordic* aspect of their history than Celtic / Gaelic as I have heard of no such creature in Irish myth, plus there is no 'V' (or 'W') letter in Gaelic, only sounds, but not letters as in 'Wulver'. It actually even sounds very Germanic / Norse. Thanks though for sharing your knowledge. Slán The Norse had many lycanthropic references and tales in their equally intriguing mythology.

7:36 actually the tradition of having a wake for the dead came about from people being mistook for being dead and being buried alive. The professional whalers were hired because the tones in their cries were actually able to wake someone who might have been mistaken for being dead, hence the phrase to someone being loud "you'd wake the dead" and hence the tradition of a wake is even called a wake in the first place.

Fun Fact: A changling was often the explanation of a young child acting different after about 2 years old, now known as autism. Sometimes babies had sudden infant death syndrome so people said the fairies took it.

Changelings have been theorised to be linked with down syndrome. The people would mistake the unusual facial features as meaning a changeling has taken their baby and put a bad replacement in its place. A lot of these "changelings" were unfortunately drowned instead of being reared.

DodgerOfSheep Probably not just Down Syndrome, but any disfiguring condition or syndrome is more likely. It would be far too unlikely for it to be comfortably linked to a single disorder as we u understand them.

They had changeling in swedish folklore too. One way to get your chold back was to do some regular worktask in a strange way, like using an eggshell as a cooking pot. The changling would then stand up and exclaim something like "Half a dozen forests have I seen grow and die, but nothing as stupid as using an eggshell for cooking" He had then showed that he wasn't a child and the real child would been returned. We also have something similare to the kelpie, näcken often a male that was found in rivers and streams. He would play fiddle and Could lure youngsters on to the water, sometime he took a maiden as wife to live under water. In rare case you could make a deal and he teach you to play fiddle, but there was often a catch you could only play a surtain number of songs in a row. Oftebn he would forget and keep playing and find that he could stop playing and the people couldn't stop dancing until they died of exhaustion.

Tell it then. Rare to even know where to look for anything Welsh. I was able to order a copy of a dictionary about 20 years ago. The person who ordered it for me said it was the only one in the world; that the language was dying & I should rather spend the money on French or Spanish or Russian. Now I can just watch online vids for free . Still got that dictionary though.

It's a demon living in the sea, but also walks on land at time. It is blamed for every kind of disaster; draughts, plagues, sick livestock etc. And people were so scared of it many didn't even dare speak it's name. It's most iconic for it's appearance; a skinned horse with a skinned human torso growing out of it's back, resembling a rider. It also had yellow veins, which were filled with black blood, which of course were visible for everyone to see, as it didn't have any skin.

No. A Banshee was originally just a woman who performed a certain kind of singing as a funerary right. It was common to have a Banshee interpret the grieving of a death through her song. When Christianity came, they didn't like the practice so they demonized the woman and told people that if you hear a Banshee you will die.

When the wind blows real hard around the house it sounds like it's screaming and howling. I couldn't help but imagine what it must have been like for people who lived far out with next to no neighbors. Trying to understand what that sound was. Maybe how ware wolves were thought up? The creatures thought to be leprechauns are often actually beings known as Fir Darrigs, especially, when described wearing a red coat or vest and brandishing a shillelagh. Also, thought I should add about the Banshee, or Bean Sidhe literally means woman of the hill, where it was believed that the fae resided.

I would say yes, just inspiration as the headless horseman is a hessian soldier who lost his head from a cannonball. Dullahans would have their head while also carrying a wagon as well and would be warded off by gold, not a specific bridge.

One creature of Irish myth I've yet to find more info on are the Oakshees. An Oakshee is a sort of tree spirit, from what I've heard

sadlobster1 no such creature exists in Irish mythology, as far as I can tell. For a start, its name is an ugly portmanteau of the English word "Oak" (Doire/Daire in Irish) with the anglicised form of "sidh" stuck on the back of it. So "oak fairy" is what... whoever made up this term is trying to say (it seems a very... New Agey, pseudo-Celtic Reconstructionist thing from the pages I saw with mentions of it). Many types of trees were considered magical or holy by the ancient Celts, and there are still fairy trees around the place, that doesn't mean a vengeful Mother Earth animist avatar comes after you (you want Warhammer Age of Sigmar Treekin for that). Cutting down a tree beloved by the síthe would just get them angry with you in general.

That quotation at the end is a mistranslation. "It's lay it on a bed of iron" the Fay cannot abide the touch of iron. It is an anathema and causes them great pain. If it is a changeling they will very strongly react. If it was human it would do no harm.

I don't know it's name but there was a Scottish "Demon" in Celtic Mythology that had the Body of a Horse with the upper half of a Skinny almost skeletal) Man sticking out from the middle of it's back, think of a Horse Rider but they're fused to the horse (and No it's not the centuar I'm talking about that has the body of a horse while it's head is replaced by the upper half of a human man)

One time I was in Scotland and found some type of rock at a beach but my cousin said to throw it away but I said we could take it to a museum. I ended up throwing it back in the ocean
