Excellent video as always Sarah Incredible to think they were still using horses for shunting in the 1950s

That surprised me too! I thought that as soon as the loco came in the horses would've been gone but apparently not!

The poem may have been a sanitised version of the proper one that uses a word rhyming with 'Diss' 😂

There is also the poem by John Betjeman: A mind’s journey to Diss.

You're the second person I've come across to mention this! I've had a read now but I can't say I agree with Mr Betjeman's summation of Diss as the 'dimmest place of all'

Another great video, thanks Sarah. A few miles from Diss is Bressingham, they have lots of trains, it is a lovely place, though a bit tricky to get to. It is a substantial walk from Diss station or a short taxi ride, but it is doable.

Brilliant video Sarah, I've not been to Diss station yet but I'd love to go there sometime. That was a very nice freight train as well.

Very good video. I used to take my kids to Monsters indoor play centre on the industrial estate near the station, but I am not sure I ever used the station itself. I do remember it having long platforms.

There's a poem by John Betjeman in reply to Mary Wilson, wife of Prime Minister, Harold Wilson. The first line went something like "Oh, Mary, it would indeed be bliss to go with you by train to Diss." Philip Heselton

I wasn't aware of this poem but I'm glad to now have read it! I always pay a little visit to John Betjeman's statue on the odd occasions I end up at St Pancras!

@@sarahwiththetrainsThere is a similar statue in Hull (where I live) of the poet Philip Larkin, by the same sculptor. I usually touch both and send their good wishes to each other when I travel down to London! Philip Heselton

@@user-kt4gu6qu7d I do love some of Philip Larkin's poems. I must try and visit the statue when I finally get up that way!

@@sarahwiththetrainsWe've just installed a new working fountain in Victoria Avenue in Hull. It's predecessor was removed in the 1920s. It has the first line of Philip Larkin's poem, 'Water': If I were to be called in to construct a religion it would be based on water'., carved round the base.

I'll try to come up with some! I originally tried to come up with something along the lines of 'Don't Diss Diss!' but something about trying to use the slang of my childhood/teenage years didn't quite sit right 20 years down the line 😅

Sarah: i havent seen a smoking area before Me: Go to any German Hauptbahnhof. There is a smoking area on each platform at every German Hauptbahnhof
@sarahwiththetrains5 ай бұрын
Every platform? The closest we usually get to a dedicated smoking area in Britain is whatever bin in the car park people have chosen to stub out cigs on

Hey, Sarah, why are the trains only going to Witham, rather than going on to London Liverpool Street? That's really puzzling me.
@sarahwiththetrains5 ай бұрын
It's due to engineering works on the line. From Witham it's rail replacement buses for part of the journey but I can't remember how far the replacement buses had to go before people were able to get aboard a train again.
