Exploring Ethiopia’s City of PEACE | Harar 🇪🇹

Today we are in Harar, the capital city of the Harari Region. The ancient city is located on a hilltop in the eastern part of the country and is about 500 kilometres (310 mi) from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. For centuries, Harar has been a major commercial centre, linked by the trade routes with the rest of Ethiopia, and the entire Horn of Africa.
It is also home to the Aweday Market, the largest chats market in Ethiopia. The crop is Ethiopia’s second largest export and makes big bucks for the farmers. The leaves contain the active ingredient Catherine, structurally and chemically similar to d-amphetamine and said to give a state of euphoria and stimulation.

Harar is called 'City of Love'. In Ethiopia the people of Harar are known to be very chill and loved everywhere in the country.

Yeah the dude who came with me turned out was a really genuine guy and helped me a lot with buses . At first I was unsure and on guard . Great place to visit . Especially the Hyenas

khat is a very big thing in Ethiopia, its chewed everywhere, especially in Muslim communities, also non muslim communtities too where the farms are located, and the capital (idk why but also the all of the warm or hot temp cities). its usually chewed with peanuts since its bitter in taste, the main point is not to ingest it or constantly chew it but to keep a bunch of it in between 1 side of the cheeks and teeth an slowly chew it to get the stimulant and euphoric effects through the tiny blood vessels found in your mouth. theres different types of khat ranging from 50 birr to 15000 birr and is one of Ethiopia's biggest exports, contending with coffee and sesame seeds, exported to Somalia Djibouti and even middle eastern countries.

They definitely loved it in Harar . A lot of people had massive bags of it in the bus on the way back to Adis . Wasn’t to sure if it was a drug . So I only tried a leaf or two . Is it bad for you ?? Or just like a coffee ?

@@EOMTravels its like drinking a few energy drinks, it gives you a shitload of energy, suppresses your appetite and you wont be able to easily fall asleep, so some people drink some alcohol after a day of chewing

It's just a mildly stimulating effect very much like coffee. It's not worth the constant chewing tho. Your jaws will ache after hours of chewing like a cow and the taste is not nice at all.
