A very sad marker is the mass grave of the ten nuns who were killed in the 1900 storm at the beach side orphanage. It's located in Calvary Cemetery just off 61st Street. NJ Clayton and family are buried nearby to that one.

An excellent video covering fascinating cemeteries! 👍 We are taught in Freemasony that a broken column symbolizes a life cut short. In our symbolism there is usually a winged angel weeping over the top of the column... 😢

It does not seem morbid in the least to take a picnic lunch and visit with loved ones in mausoleums. I visit the remains of my relatives often in the cemetery and I've had lunch there several times

Great video J.R.! I remember Kathleen showing our tour group that there were fences around many family plots and most are now buried due to the grade raisings. However, there are some tops of the posts still showing above the ground.

I always wondered why the mausoleums are so short. Riding down Broadway as a youngster in the '70s I recall there were a LOT more of those short little houses (perhaps four times as many). I guess with no one around to front big bucks on repairs after a storm the city has to demolish it and put the people in a hole.
