On our last trip to London, we got lots of suggestions to visit Harrod's London, a very posh department store with seven floors of all kinds of designer brands, an epic food hall and so much more. We had so much fun exploring this store and could have spent hours more to see everything.

As a Londoner I would say Fortnum and Mason on Piccadilly is much better than Harrods to visit, especially in the lead up to Christmas as it is smaller and easier to navigate x

Lynda Fortnum and Mason used to be very similar too Harrods, but I agree very much with your Comment, about finding your way around , Harrods used to be more spread out , now it’s a rabbit Warren of shops stuffed in Cheek by Jowl , and most of the old school staff have left , it’s a shadow of its former glory , I wish Mohammad Al Fayed would buy it back .

I love Harrods, the food hall is amazing. My favourite thing to do is to hit the food hall on a lovely summer day, grab a big posh picnic (the crab cakes are amazing), cross the road to the Sainsbury's local and buy a cold bottle of white wine with a couple of plastic glasses and head up a few hundred yards to Hyde park next to the Princess Diana memorial fountain and eat the lovely food, sat in the park, couple of glasses of wine with my wife just taking in the food sun and surroundings. Ok might of cost us £30 in total compared to a couple of meal deals but the experience is priceless.

I used to work in Harrods in the late 90’s early 2000’s in the Childrens Books department and toy section, it was great fun all the staff were lovely I made some really good friends I am still in touch with. I went back a few years ago and the store has changed so much especially the toy area which now lacks character as it appears after it was sold to a new owner they have boarded up a lot of the store so you can’t see the ornate architecture that made it so special and it also made it really claustrophobic! It didn’t feel the same at all and I was very sad to see this. When I worked there I never bought much except in the book department with my staff discount and occasionally treated myself to some fancy chocolate 😁

it baffles me to this day when i travel, the UK has amazing food. Not sure why the americans deny this.

Three reasons: #1/ During WW2, food in Britain WAS really bland due to rationing (and Americans went back home to report as much - which has stayed in their psyche). #2/ American food is stuffed with VERY addictive, high levels of sugars, salts and many other chemicals (banned in most other countries of the world). #3/ Less than 42% of the population of America have a Passport (thus don't travel outside the US) - But believe everything that is told to them... DUH!!! LOL

We really enjoy the vest majority of UK food. They have a much more interesting selection of food than we generally have in the US.

I'm American but live in the UK on a pernament basis. When I first moved here I was worried about the food as I heard it was awful. It is quite frankly a complete myth. I personally think the food here is better than back in the US. There is no growth hormones in meat, chicken is not washed in chlorine, there is no high fructose corn syrup and many of the artificial ingredients, dyes and additives that are so prevalent back home are outright banned.

I think for food, Fortnum and Mason is probably a decent option - less expensive but still very 'fancy'. I used to call in sometimes on my odd work trip to London and buy coffee there.

@Ron Kelley - F&M are still ridiculously expensive, but I love walking through the store. And yes, much nicer than Harrods! Although I have bought over the years (as a treat for myself), their famous Scotch Eggs... mind you, I 'mentally' justify it by saying £4.50 ish is OK for a filling meal - LOL! And they ARE fantastic (but for a boiled egg with some sausage meat and breadcrumbs) 🤔

Sensory overload is a very real thing. Going into an environment which overawes you a little is almost sure to bring this on, so i wasn't surprised you felt it in Harrods. I always get this too. Rest assured the majority of customers feel the same way you felt, but are all busy trying no to show it. Most of us can't afford the many luxurious items on display, but unlike some London stores, I never feel that ths staff there are passing any kind of judgement. I find the worst for this is Selfridges staff on Oxford Street. Even if you only buy one chocolate in Harrods, you'll still be made to feel you are welcome. It's easy to get drawn into snap decisions about what to buy in the way of food or souvenirs, so I think it's always time well spent to explore a little and read the lift signs before doing any actual buying.

@Gary F - Your comment I, 100% agree with... I go in there often, when nearby, and have done for many years. As soon as I enter, I'm transported back to being a little kid again! Never mind the 'stuff' being sold, you only have to hear the children gasping in 'awness' (which has been highlighted as not a word - DUH? - anyway, I told 'spell check' it is a correct word), so alright now...Anyway, I love Hamleys and know or (sadly) knew many magicians's who have worked there in the 'magic department' over many years.

You left the shop and still looked completely stunned. There’s a green nearly opposite Harrod’s, but it used to be for residents only. I spent my student days babysitting for people around Harrod’s - some rock stars, who were sort of normal. Anyway, the green opposite Harrod’s was a plague pit where the victims of one plague were buried. So, perhaps not the place to eat your lunch although it’s lovely nowadays.

I've used the store many times over the past 40 years and I don't think I've covered half of the departments, you could spend a week in there and not see everything, the kitchens for the pastries and bread are underground, it actually goes down almost as much as you can see above ground, I have friends who have and a couple who still work there. It doesn't look like you covered the Christmas department, and the nice restaurant on the 4th floor for afternoon tea

The good thing about Harrods is, they realise that its as much as a tourist attraction as it is a shop so as long as you act decently you will be treated well. The hardest thing was to get a seat at the ice cream bar as it was always filled with Sheiks and their families.

My BFF worked at Harrod’s toy department during the student holidays. She said it was a weird experience, mainly because of the very very spoilt children dumped in there by their patients whilst they wandered off to buy clothes or jewellery, etc. Some of the kids were nice and it was a good experience despite some kids’ wild tantrums.

It wasn't only 'Toffs' who dumped the sprogs in a Toy Dept. whilst they went shopping, my Mother and Grandmother did it to me as a kid but in Bentalls in Kingston upon Thames. No I never threw a tantrum, more than my life was worth, Mother was very good with a Bamboo garden cane. Way more painful than the Willow 'enforcer' at school.

Harrod’s food hall is famous for its tiles. Harrod’s used to have a Royal warrant from Prince Philip until Princess Diana died. The then owner of Harrod’s was Mohamed Al-Fayed. His son was then Diana’s boyfriend who also died in that car accident. Al-Fayed accused Prince Philip of engineering the accident and banned him from Harrod’s. Unsurprisingly, Harrod’s lost the Royal warrant. Harrod’s is now owned by the state investment fund of Qatar. Some things are worth going to Harrod’s for - like this fancy chocolates as a one-off gift - but for the most part, Harrod’s sells stuff you can get elsewhere for less money. There used to be a memorial to Dodi and Diana but the new owners took that away a few years ago. You should go to Fortnum and Mason - but the afternoon tea is good but costs an absolute fortune. Nip in for a quick look and then you can go to the Royal Academy opposite. The RA does a great lunch and I had the best red wine in there once and forgot to write the name of it down! I’m afraid you need to pre-book. St. Paul’s does a good tea and cake in the crypt. Not a lot of people know it does food. A lot of people go to these posh shops to buy a greeting card or something relatively cheap only to get the shop’s carrier bag.

They used to have a pet store on the 4th or 5th floor with Puppies and when I used to work nearby at the local museums and had a really hard day I would just quickly pop to Harrods for the puppies to bring me joy. I don't think they have the pet store anymore because the noise and amount of people must have been overwhelming for the poor animals.

I’m English and I’ve always wanted to do afternoon tea at the Ritz Hotel, check that out, maybe check out the history of the Ritz and their cuisine etc … the most quintessential English thing to do whilst in London. Harrods is too busy for me personally, I found it a waste of time although nice …. 3 hours of my life I’ll never get back, looking at things I neither want or can’t afford lol 😂 I enjoy your videos though, you 2 are doing a great job x

Awe you didn't really see much there, there's a French cafe ground floor behind the jewlery that has tea and cakes with gold on it. There's also harrods cafe has Russian Honey cake, something g special you have to try. The Thai chicken wraps to take away are good. The champagne on 4th floor with rooftops views is special also the tea room, you can't go to London and jot real proper tea service!!! You are missing also basement floor!! Where harrods gift shop is. I got a lot of Harrods x winnie the pooh baby things there because that's where Winnie the Pooh originated from!! The author AA Milbe lived not far from there (there's a blue plaque on his house) and he bought his son Christopher a Harrods bear 100 years ago and took him to the London zoo where there was a bear their was a bear named Winnie. So he watched his son play with his Teddy bear and wrote the stories. I'm american with a British husband lived in London for years so I love all the history!!! Xx

The Christmas department is fabulous, but very expensive. We went into London to go to Abbey Road, then got the tube into the city centre. I had seen a particular decoration I wanted, a glass nail polish bottle in hot pink. It was £20! I could have easily spent hundreds in the Christmas department alone, never mind the beauty hall. The chocolate room looked incredible. I would love to go again, but we are getting our daughter through university so life is expensive right now.

Now it's time to visit Fortnum & Mason for even better food. Harrod's even supplied wild animals up to the mid 60's including Lions and Tigers if one could afford them. At one time, like Liberty did, prices were not displayed as the thinking was, if one has to ask the price, one can't afford it. Visit the 'American' department store in Oxford Street, Selfridge & Co., well it was founded by an American. Liberty also worth a visit. Selfridges have a marvelous Christmas window display as do most of the top end stores if you are still in London or can come back in December.

I agree with some other commentators in regard to the current Harrods experience. I may understand the commercial pressures which have required recent and current owners of this once unique London centre of retail excellence to change the place into a Kardashianesque parody of its former self, but I cannot help but regret witnessing it. BTW, while in the UK, as you have featured several videos in which you two review British confectionary, I have a few suggestions for traditional items you might pick up, which might prove difficult to acquire stateside, and which might prove fodder 🙄🤭 for future videos. These include: Meltis's Newberry Fruits, Topic bars, Pontefract cakes, Everton mints, treacle toffee, various of Simpkins's candies (in tins) such as their butterscotch or barley sugar or Old Miners' lozenges or apple ginger sweets, Fox's Glacier mints, Barret's liquorice allsorts, Murray mints, Fry's Chocolate Cream bar (the first chocolate bar in the world, from the 1830s) which is also available in orange or mint cream varieties, and peppermint Aero. Enjoy.

I grew up in London and frequently visited Harrods in the 1970s and 1980s before it was purchased by Mohamed Al Fayed and then lost all its royal warrants. Now I only walk through the food halls at off peak times if I’m in the area in the hope of a free sample! My favourite London store is Liberty at the top end of Regent Street (alongside Carnaby Street) for its unique character and historic arts and crafts tradition. I also like Selfridges in Oxford Street, mainly for its food hall and the homeware concessions in the basement. Harrods these days is crowded with tourists and top price concessions and has sadly lost most of its historic character. Fortnums also good, especially in the run up to Christmas when the floor walkers change their black tail coats for red, and of course the charming animated clock above the portico on Piccadilly.
