Yakushima Island (屋久島) is a true island paradise, hidden in southern Japan. Yakushima is an island gem that holds many secrets. Traveling to Yakushima ranks as my favorite experience in Japan so far, and is a truely unforgettable experience. In this video we will hike to Jomon Sugi, explore the Shiratani Unsuikyo forest, climb inside the Wilson Stump, swim with turtles and explore tide pools uncovering the mysteries of Yakushima.Nothing like what you find on mainland Japan. Yakushima was the inspiration for the Miyazaki film Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) located in Kagoshima Prefecture, the southern most part of Japan before Okinawa, and holds many treasures waiting to be discovered.There is so much more to the island, you can see coral reefs, hike in monkey and native yakushika deer forests, hatching loggerhead and green sea turtles. So much more is hidden on Yakushima, waiting for you to discover. You can access Yakushima by Jetfoil / hydrofoil in just two hours via Kagoshima Port (and even see flying fish on your way over) or take a quick sidetrip to Sakurajima, Japans iconic active volcano. Lets Travel To Yakushima Together in This Video

Anyone have notifications on? I had a lot of fun making this one, shot over two trips 5 years apart, really hope I did the island justice. I couldnt include a few clips I wanted because they were too blurry but there is so much more to Yakushima that just what is in this video, we saw forest frosts, Yakushika native deer, troops of monkeys running through the forest, peaks looking over the forest. And I wanted to include a longer starlapse and shots of the meteor shower (but we had to leave the beach to protect the turtles). If you ever get a chance to visit be sure to go! Let me know what you think and what you want to see from Japan.

Yakushima was the first place I visited in Japan after acclimatizing in Kagoshima and it is also by far the most beautiful place in Japan. I have visited the island 3 times and always came with enormous expectations and these were always exceeded. The first time, I have even seen a rocket launch from the neighboring island. There is no other place where I had tears in my eyes as often as there.

There is more to the island that I could capture, so much beauty like all the forest frogs, monkeys, deer, monkeys that ride the deer. Mountain Plateaus I didnt have time to see, its really a magical place and its crazy how much there is on such a small place.

Awesome video, really deserves more views. I'm planning to go to Japan in 2022 or 2023, depending on when they open the borders. Ifound Yakushima completely at random and I instantly felt the need to go there on my trip. Is it easy to travel there by just staying at hostels etc.?

Absolutely. There are many hostels around the island within walking distance of bus stops, the camp site i stayed at also has log cabins, and the island has a few upmarket hotels as well.

Wow this is a fantastic video, very underrated! Beautifully shot and put-together. Question - I think you mentioned you had a guide at one point. Was there a guide for the hike, or for the whole stay, or just a part of the trip? I take it most people do the hikes without a guide? Also, are there places to rent a bike around the island? Appreciate it :)
@InakaAdventure
@InakaAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
You can get guides for the hike but I did it alone, guide was just for the beach at night because it was hatching season for the turtles. You can rent bikes all over the island / at hotel and camp sites for about 1000 Yen a day

I visited Yakushima in August 2006. A magical place of misty rain forest. Humidity is high and expect to perspire when active. Hiking presents a welcome challenge for those up to the task. Because of the dense nature of the forest photography and video require special attention to ISO and f stop settings. Background or foreground can lack focus if settings are not refined. Yakushima is heavily populated with monkeys, famous for sea turtles, and of course Jomon Sugi. The beaches are rocky and sandy but good for swimming. Popular for snorkeling. If you are there at the right time, you will see sea turtles migrating to the beach to lay their eggs.

Stunning scene x stunning scene. Did you camp out for every night of your stay?
@InakaAdventure
@InakaAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
I stayed one night at a guest house / hostel, it was cheap but the bunk beds were made out of Japanese cedar and the whole place had that amazing cedar smell. Lovely little place surrounded by the forest, but no lights on the road and pitch black when I got back after dark, spooked a couple of the local deer which are native to the island while walking it. Unfortunately most of this episode was filmed on a DJI Osmo Pocket which has no low light so I couldnt include shots.

@InakaAdventure
@InakaAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
Kagoshima is a great place, nice and warm. You could absolutely camp for 2 days on Yakushima but I would recommend at least 3, you dont need to camp you could check out some of the hostels there which I think are about 2 or 3,000 Yen a day, Guest House Yakushima is nice for this, its near a bus stop so its convenient for getting the early bus to hike Jumon Sugi. I camped at 屋久島青少年旅行村 which is only 5 minutes walk to the Tsukasaki Tide Pools, there are also cabins there. They dont have a website but you can call them when in Japan and Ive just sort of shown up and contacted the office and they didnt seem to mind too much, they also have a bus stop outside the camp site which is very convenient, but i think its the second to last stop, so definately get the bus pass as I think from Anbo to the camp is almost 1,500 one way, and youll probably use the bus much more than the price is.

The hardwood was impressive lol I have an 8-day vacation coming up at the end of this month, so I'm in search of a place where I can get away from Osaka, and being a nature and Princess Mononoke lover, this fits the bill. Thanks for the tip about the bus pass. About the hike you took to see the Jomon-sugi, did you take the bus back to your accommodation? I'm scared to miss the bus back, I wouldn't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere at night 😭 where there snakes on the trail? Sorry for having lots of questions, I'm planning to go alone.
@InakaAdventure

Buses back leave on a set schedule so you need to leave the trail before the last one or camp overnight, however I believe there are certain restrictions on camping but youd need to inquire at the Yakushima tourism association to learn more about that

how would you count the rings without cutting down/hurting the tree?
@InakaAdventure
@InakaAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a great question Jandor, you dont need to cut down a tree to count the rings, you can drill a core sample and count them that way without harming the tree. The problem with Jomon Sugi is that even though its so large, its hollow on he inside, so its impossible to count its rings. The reason its believed to be 7200 years old on the upper end is minerals around the bark show evidence of a volcanic eruption from that time.

I heard its very challenging to hike to Jomon Sugi and Wilson stump, like a 10hr hike to and fro. Is that the case for you as well?
@InakaAdventure
@InakaAdventure Жыл бұрын
Its a long one for sure, 8 or 10 hours. Done it twice, I wouldn't call it very challenging because its mostly a slight incline on a track. Unless you do it in summer like I did, there is part of the mountain you need to go up on a lot of stairs / roots and in the heat that can be rough. Also last I went you could only access the trail head by bus, and only 1 leaves per day around 4 or 5 am. Fortunately all the bus stops go past where you can stay and they have schedules and wake up calls for you, in fact the place I stayed prepared a lunch for me before I left in the morning
