Lehman Caves is a unique geological wonder at Great Basin National Park in Nevada. Discovered in the mid 1880’s by Absalom Lehman, the rooms of Lehman Caves are profusely decorated by a large variety of formations. Lehman Caves is well known for its abundance of shield formations, of which there are more than 300.
The cave extends a quarter of a mile into the limestone and marble, on the eastern slope of Wheeler Peak. Many of the passageways in Lehman Caves are narrow and there are many places where you need to watch your head. The temperature of the cave is a constant fifty degrees. If you want to tour Lehman Caves, reservations are strongly recommended and can be made up to 30 days in advance. We took the 90-minute Grand Palace Tour, but there are also other tours or 30 or 60 minutes.
Lehman Caves first became a National Monument in 1922 and then became part of Great Basin National Park in 1986. Great Basin National Park acquired its name from the unique drainage that occurs in the region of the United States. In this part of the country, the rivers and streams do not drain out to the sea. Instead, they drain into this vast area of the country known as the Great Basin.
