Come join me on the incredible Massacre Falls Trail in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona! We’ll explore the fascinating desert landscape, its unique rock formations, winding washes and hidden caves. Let’s take in the rich biodiversity of the region, including some gorgeous cacti, some not-so-nice plants, and even a family of deer! As we hike the trails, we’ll do some rock hunting, especially for some special crystalline rocks that sparkle like diamonds in the sun.
Nestled deep within the Superstition Mountains, Massacre Falls is a breathtaking natural wonder, and a must-visit day trip from the Phoenix area. While this trail offers some breath-taking sights, Massacre Falls comes with a dark past. In the late 1800s, a group of miners and their families were ambushed and killed near the sight of the falls. The details of the event are shrouded in mystery, but to this day it is said that the remnants of the massacre, including old mining equipment and bullet holes, can still be seen. The legends and rumors about the tragedy have been passed down through generations, making this hike one that will not only provide you with stunning views but also a hauntingly eerie ambiance.
So lace up your hiking boots and get ready to experience the awe-inspiring beauty and thrill of hiking to Massacre Falls!

If you'd like to see some videos of Massacre Falls when it is actually flowing, I've included links to two short clips I had taken a couple years back when the falls were at peak season. They are in the description.

Thank you and welcome! I love checking out all the crazy rock formations you can find in this area, and I'm glad other people are as psyched as I am to see them! I'm always on the hunt for more, and they'll always make their way into my videos.

Welcome! You're definitely in the right place-- I'm not sure if I'm a rockhound with a hiking problem, or a hiker with a rockhounding problem! 😄

What a beautiful place you have to walk in. I live on the South coast of England and there is nothing like that over here. Great video though, thanks.

Thank you! I do feel fortunate to be able to explore such a unique and amazing place, though I've always wanted to go for a hike at the White Cliffs of Dover as well!

Thank you! It was a bummer there wasn't any water this time, but getting to climb around on the rocks and taking in all those views more than made up for it!

Love this area. I haven't seen saguaros in person in 5 years and I miss them. It seems surprisingly green there, now. Is that a result of the recent rains?

I agree, and am definitely a fan of the spikey desert plants! One of the things that I love about the Sonoran Desert is how green it is. We actually got less than average rainfall this year, but the plants still produced with what little they got! Pretty impressive, especially given how hot our summer was this year!

Thanks for another great hike! Where did that side trail you took hook up to the main trail? I'm always looking for paths less-traveled!

Thank you! Once you start coming back from Massacre Falls, the trail will be about a half-mile down on your right (east). Its pretty easy to find and to follow once you're on it. From there, you go for about 1.5miles again (north-west), until you get into a grassy plains area (you'll see the car door!). At this point, start following trails back toward the main trail, which will be south-west. I always use AllTrails for route finding, and this one can be found on there. Good Luck!

Nice camera work. What day did you do this hike as today is Dec. 20, and today's rain is the first in some time.

Thank you! I'm pretty sure this was toward the end of November/ beginning of December when we were having those spotty showers here in town. Seems like it tends to rain more out east, so I was hoping for the best! But it was nothing like we're getting right now rain-wise, so I'll probably be heading out to check it again pretty soon!

What equipment did you use to film this video with? How do you have batteries that last all day?
@naturallytrailheaded

I use a GoPro 11, and I carry an extra battery. I can usually get 4-6hrs per battery, especially by not taking really long shots.

Are you concerned about rattlesnakes. How do you avoid being bitten by a rattlesnake?
@naturallytrailheaded
@naturallytrailheaded 6 ай бұрын
Rattlesnakes are a real concern out here, for sure. During the colder months their not really around, but when it starts warming up you'll find them. I've seen many rattlesnakes, almost stepped on quite a few, but I've never been bitten. As soon as they give you that "hey man you're too close" rattle, you just need to backtrack quick and they'll leave you alone. They're like any animal-- they generally don't want to bite unless they're being threatened, so I try not to be a threat! 😁
