Yep, those are zebra blennies! Snowflakes and yellow margin morays are frequently seen in tide pools and shallow reef flats around Maui - especially when juveniles. Everyone likes to be the big fish in the small pond, hehe! When I first moved to Maui, I didn't even realize there were tide pools there because I spent all of my time on the east side of the beach where the surfers and turtles hang out. Because of the typical surge direction on the north shore - the sediment is move erosive on the west side of the beach, leaving the rocky substrate exposed to develop a tide pool ecosystem. It's a fun place to wade around, and the waves are less overwhelming inside the natural break wall of rocks.

@@KaimanaConservation Oh, that's interesting, I hadn't thought about how the two beach sides would differ that way. We haven't gone in the ocean on the north shore at all yet, though we wanted to snorkel at Hana - we heard there was a nice sheltered spot off the little trail at the far eastern end of Hana Bay Beach Park. Unfortunately the last time we went to Hana the surf was especially high for all 3 days we were there, so even the sheltered nooks were churning too much and we didn't do it. Have you ever snorkeled there?

@@youcos I have snorkeled at Ho'okipa once on an unusually calm day - mostly rocky reef and lots of urchins and other echinoderms that are suited to rough seas. I have also snorkeled at the cove you mentioned in Hana. We didn't stray too far out of the cove because of rumors of current - but the area itself was pretty nice. A bit of a rock scramble to get to though.
