Deira is one of the oldest parts of Dubai, situated on the northern side of Dubai Creek. It's known for its traditional souks (markets), including the famous Gold Souk and Spice Souk. This area is one of the oldest residential areas in Dubai, characterised by narrow lanes and traditional wind-tower architecture. The Al Fahidi Fort, which now houses the Dubai Museum, is located here. The museum offers insights into Dubai's history and culture, showcasing artefacts, dioramas, and exhibits about the emirate's past.
Dubai Creek is a natural saltwater inlet that played a significant role in the city's development as a trading port. The Creek divides the city into Deira and Bur Dubai, and crossing it by traditional abra (water taxi) is a popular activity for tourists and locals alike.
Located on the southern side of Dubai Creek, Bur Dubai is another historic area with attractions such as the Dubai Museum, the Grand Mosque, and the Textile Souk. The location is also known for its historic buildings and cultural landmarks.
Al Shindagha is home to the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, the former residence of Dubai's ruler. This heritage site offers a look into the royal family's history and the traditional architecture of the time. This area in Al Shindagha showcases Dubai's maritime history and pearl diving traditions. Visitors can see traditional crafts, watch live demonstrations, and learn about the city's pre-oil era lifestyle.
