Kanazawa was the first of many cities I would travel to last year in November and I got there a bit too early for proper Fall foliage but it was incredible all the same. When I went there, a Japanese guide for the garden in front of the castle chatted me up and gave me a tour of not just the garden but also the castle as well! It absolutely has Kyoto vibes but without THAT many tourists. Having been to all 3 of the gardens you mentioned, I'd say Kenrokuen is the most beautiful of them all. I kind of wish I lived in Japan permanently so I could experience places like these in every season.

Kanazawa was not damaged by air raids during the war with the United States. Therefore, there are many people who believe in old townscapes and old values. Kanazawa is called Little Kyoto and is one of Japan's leading tourist destinations. However, since it is a tourist destination, the prices of services and products are high. Also, the summers are hot and the winters are cold.

On January 1, 2024, a large earthquake struck the Oku-Noto region. There was no major damage to Kanazawa's tourist spots and cultural properties, which were popular with foreign tourists. There are very few tourists, so sightseeing in Kanazawa is recommended. On the other hand, the damage to the Noto Peninsula was severe, with most tourist spots in the Oku-Noto region at the northern tip suffering serious damage due to collapsed buildings, widespread seafloor upheaval, and large-scale fire damage.

We liked Kanazawa so much, and it is still preserved from "massive tourism", it also allowed us to travel to the countryside on day trips. Great video, a very complete summary of the town IMO.

I LOVED kanazawa ! Such a nice place to visit. Had some amazing food and it was a blast to walk around the samurai district and Higashiya. Also had a lot of fun with local people I met at an Izakaya and ended up in a bar drinking whiskies and chatting with locals. Same kind of feeling you get in Kyoto but much more peaceful. Definitely recommend!

Kanazawa used to be not visited so much by foreigners because it was not easy to get to by train. But with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, now with the extension to Tsuruga making access from Osaka a lot easier, expect a lto more foreign visitors.

I visited Kanazawa on my trip last September, too. What surprised me most was just how stylish people were. People in Tokyo are bleeding edge hip, people in Osaka are grungy hip, people in Kyoto are classy, but Kanazawa was something else. Almost felt like they were putting in extra effort to not be seen as country bumpkins or something. The best thing about it is that it's super well connected and easily reached via Shinkansen, definitely worth dropping by for yet another flavor of Japan as part of an itinerary. The 21st century museum was another fun destination I'd recommend, if you can stand modern art.

I always told people to try Kanazawa instead of dealing with the crowds in Kyoto, but I heard Kanazawa is getting more crowded now that the shinkansen goes there. Very nice video and the only other place I liked that I don't think you mentioned was the art museum.

Kanazawa was an unexpected delight on my trip. My wife and I spent more time walking around in the evening. I was a nice change of pace from Tokyo. We stumbled into the castle gardens late in the evening and we were treated to a light show. There are also a ton of shops with local handmade goods. You missed the hidden ninja temple and the bunny girl bar.

I've spent a few months in Kanazawa on exchange and had a great time, nice to see it again :) I can't recommend Katamachi enough in the late afternoon/evenings, lots of bars and dining establishments, it has this big city vibe that contrasts with the more laid back, traditional parts of Kanazawa.

It might have felt a little uncomfortable at times walking around Kanazawa with all that rain but it's visually striking, very pleasing. Thanks Sarah 🙇‍♂ @4:55: I would bet they do that with a stencil. Speaking of parallelisms with Kyoto, I remember the same sort of thing happening there on one of your previous vlogs, finding refuge from the rain in a series of quirky, attractive kissaten / coffee-shops. They even had the same sort of look...

Good video, but Kanazawa is actually quite popular now among both foreigners and Japanese. Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen started going to Kanazawa Station, I believe, in 2015, there has been a significant influx of tourists. If you walk around town, almost every other group of people consists of tourists. It has reached the point where some residents of Kanazawa are concerned that it might eventually become like Kyoto. Also, fun fact, if you call the big gate at the station a Torii gate, Japanese people won't know what you're talking about. It's NOT a torii gate, apparently. It's real name is Tsuzumimon Gate, named after the tsuzumi Japanese drum. (Source: Me. Someone living in Kanazawa)

I had heard that after the earthquake, tourism is down, and thought it would be a less crowded place to visit and bring my money to - you make it sound like the locals aren’t into it? Japan is indeed getting over touristed, with the yen so weak. I think it will change as it recovers strength, which is probably why everyone is trying to go now, while it’s affordable. But how is Kanazawa doing at this time?

lol well, true... but the one in January that caused there to be a drop in tourism because it made international news. In fact, the govt is subsidizing hotel rooms 50% to support them through this patch. I'm going to take advantage and change my plan to go to Kamakura and go to Kanazawa instead, to be a little less crowded I hope.
