Maybe the humour of this film (basically the humor of the 80s) could be offensive and outdated to the new generations, but this is the kind of film that you never get tired of watch, as the same as its crazy characters and surreal jokes. One of the best comedies from that decade. I enjoyed it with my parents in VHS and of course I'll enjoy it with my children

@cjwrench07
@cjwrench07 5 жыл бұрын
You have to remember, critics can see anywhere from 75 to 300 movies a year. So, things like the stupid movie tropes that we don’t notice or mind, are just an example of unoriginal thought to them. Plus, Siskel was always known for mostly ignoring comedies. His favourites would have been the modern movies from an actor like Daniel Day-Lewis. And when you are comparing something like. Lincoln. To Police Academy. It isn’t really a competition at all. And being a comedy, isn’t a good excuse for the overall stilted acting in this movie. Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love this movie. And I have tons of nostalgia for this entire series.

Steven Farmer I agree that it's not on par with Airplane! or Blazing Saddles, but those are spoof movies. And Police Academy is a more subtle spoof, as it's not throwing references and jokes every other line of dialogue. It's a time capsule type of movie, that really shouldn't work. I think they were going for a Animal House/Caddyshack, with the police setting and premise.

The first Police Academy movie is my number 1 favourite film of all-time. I must have seen it hundreds of times. Whenever I had a sleepover with my friends, we would rent a couple of videos (this being the mid-80s, there was a wide choice available) and Police Academy would have to be one of the tapes we got out. The subsequent movies gradually became less enjoyable because they were made with a family audience in mind (I believe from the 2nd movie onwards, they got PG ratings, meaning young kids could watch as long as a "responsible adult" was there with them).

@@sha11235 I second that. To be fair, the other ones going past the first film aren’t really noteworthy. Don’t give me wrong, PAs 2 thru 4 have their moments - but it doesn’t excuse the fact that they are one dimensional, paint-by-the-number stories. The characters are just there to perform their actions, they never really bond and don’t have any set goals to make them human and for the audience to root for them (apart from the first one). The only valid reason that these movies have proven profitable is just because of the visual aspect - particularly making it accessible for those who don’t speak English (i.e. Mr. Bean).

I'm so glad I grew Up in the 80s with films like this. Watching Police Academy, The Goonies, Princess Bride, Nothing But Trouble and so many more amazing films, gave me a great respect for film making. Most of the time things were done for real, practical effects and barely any CGI because computers weren't a thing yet. Special FX makeup was a skill and practical effects added to the art. Movies now are missing those 2 key elements that made things seem so genuine back then.

It took me years to finally realize and notice how common it was for Hollywood movies, big budget or otherwise, to be filmed in Toronto where I live and grew up. I just would always recognize familiar streets, locations and landmarks but didn't think nothing of it. Thought maybe cities were just built in similar ways. lol There wasn't an internet to look it up obviously and I wasn't a big enough geek at the time to do actual research.

I love the Police Academy series as it’s light hearted “slap stick” fun. I grew up on these movies and I think I’ll always have a soft spot for them.

You know it's a good Monday when GoodBadFlicks uploads a new video. Very nice look at a movie my father introduced me to when it was playing on television one time, and the less said about the sequels the better lol Keep up the great work GBF! 👍🏻👍🏻

This film is the definition of goofy '80's comedy, and will always hold a place in my childhood memories.

I grew up with the first one, saw it first time when I was less than 6, and loved it since. My daughter also loves it and she first saw it around when she was the same age I was. It’s special cause she only focuses on the funny parts and isn’t really concerned about the more adult parts. Though she, as I did, realizes that some characters and situations are bad and wrong since they’re so well and simply outlined, and she really needed little to be explained of it, as it was for me. And she adores the music! Sadly they don’t write nor make movies this well anymore

I loved this film. I should have not been watching it when I was really young but I remember laughing so much. Some of the adult content I learned later on which made this film even more enjoyable. I do like the later films with Bobcat.

Despite "Exploring" series already told us about some of the most unexpected movies, it never ceases to surprise me in the best ways possible. Especially since I can count on Cecil digging up the facts I don't know about the movie in the first minute and that's me being a HUGE movie trivia buff. I re-watched the full film series of Police Academy this year and that reminded me just how much I love this franchise since my childhood. Many people dismiss these movies as sexist and/or unfunny, but in fact they were very progressive for 80's, having a large, very diverse cast and depicting practically everyone in a way that makes audience sympathize with them. It's hard to understate how huge of an achievement that is, especially since how much they told young people in Post-Soviet countries about what society can achieve in that area. As for changes franchise endured over the years, I actually might attribute that to how different the movies are. My favorites of the franchise are first two, the fourth (which has an amazing soundtrack) and the sixth which is an insane action/superhero movie with awesome urban atmosphere, stunts and likable villains. Although, to be fair: I can watch any movie of that series, even Mission to Moscow, at any time.

My family and I practically wore the VHS out! As for the backlash, I think it's easier for people to say "these movies aren't funny and you should feel bad for enjoying them" instead of, "despite the later films veering off course, the original and early sequels are still hilarious."

I was 7 years old when this came out. I remember watching it when I was 8 on our Betamax. It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen at that young age. I remember my dad hated it and all the sequels. My favorite characters were Kevin Winslow, Bobcat, and Tackleberry.

I loved the first 2 and the 3rd one was pretty alright too, at least I thought so as a kid. Maybe that it wouldn't hold up if I would watch it again now, but that doesn't matter, since it is a classic of my childhood.
