Valpolicella, Ripasso, Amarone, Recioto - all these Italian red wines come from the same region, and yet it is easy for wine consumers to become lost and confused between these styles. So, to provide some clarity and confidence, in this video, let’s talk about the different characteristics and production methods behind them and at the end of the video do a little wine tasting.

Thank You for Your supportive comment. There are some producers who do dry Cabernet, Merlot and even white grape varieties, as You have a comment below already. But Italy has impressive and diverse amount of native grapes, I don’t think they really want to experiment with French grapes. Plus, the highest recognition, which is DOC and DOCG usually limits producers with grape varieties that can be used. 🍷

Valpolicella is a lovely wine region, and from my wine studies and reading I'm familiar with Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara. Oseleta & Dindarella are new for me, thanks for sharing some new information. For me Ripasso seems to be my favorite in between Valpolicella, which is sort like an everyday wine and the Amarones, which can sometimes be too high in ABV, RS and price. 😄Though I have had some more savory, and earthy ones where they were more balanced and integrated. I would love to try a Recioto, though they seem to be a pretty niche wine, even in Europe. So far out in Asia I've never seen one. As a wine lover I am glad that Valpolicella doesn't have the cachet or buzz, that Barolo, Chianti Classico, Brunello, and Bolgheri do. Because the prices are lower and there is more availability. Great video, cool, fun and informative. Keep them coming and I hope Obi-Wan is doing well.😀

Thank You for Your insightful comment. I agree, though I love Amarone I rarely choose it as a wine for an evening because it has high alcohol. And this is one of the reasons, why locals call it a meditation wine. Yes, Recioto is really difficult to find, and the prices are often times higher than the regular Amarone, unfortunately. 😅 But if You have a possibility, definitely worth a try. 🍷

Great video as always. One of the wines that attracted me to wine, was the Campofiorin by MASI. These 'Super-Venetians', are amazing for certain special occasions and food pairings. Amarone is one of those great age worthy wines for collecting. I love that with age, a good Amarone develops those tertiary notes and the tannins turn velvety and delicious. Would love to try some Quintarelli, maybe when I hit that lottery lol. Thanks for the vid. I love your accent btw and your grammar is fine. Cheers to you guys.

Funny side note, Valpolicella was the first wine type I knew the name of because my mother kept talking about it sometime in the 80'ies, probably because it was a huge, cheap hit in the mass market. I come from a quintessential working class family, and they really liked their alcohol. Not in the sense that people here like their alcohol, but in that getting as shitfaced as possible at least once a week kind. The 'women would lock themselves in the bathroom to have "serious talk" (lol)', the 'men's speech would be reduced to mere guttural sounds' kind, and it suddenly became hard to tell who was married to who kind. My little sister and I would sneak around with a tape recorder and record things they said and laugh our heads off at it. The scene was fun for a while, until some started to lose control and it really wasn't anymore.

I didn't know about the Valpolicella and Recioto styles, I only knew Amarone and Ripasso. Thanks for listing and comparing all those styles. Sounds like I need to give Valpolicella Classico a go! Amarone is way too sweet and heavy for me, Ripasso just borderline. It seems that Valpolicella Classico is not very well known or asked for here in Switzerland, never seen it in any store and only 2-3 online stores have a few bottles. What's your experience with sourcing Valpolicella Classico?
@NoSediment
@NoSediment Ай бұрын
This is so interesting to read, because Valpolicella Classico is usually much easier so find than other labels, at least where I am from. It is produced in much higher volume and is more affordable. Here, several options can be found in every supermarket. One might discuss the level of quality though. 😅
@fnherzog

@@NoSediment Thank you so much for your answer! I just checked one of our biggest supermarket chains (Coop) and online seller (Flaschenpost, they source wines from various sellers/distributors, a bit like a wine-amazon if you will). Here are some stats: Coop, 3500 wines, 2015 reds, 49 from Valpolicella of which 26 are Amarone, 19 Ripasso, 3 Recioto and 1 Valpolicella Classico Flaschenpost, 31'596 wines, 19'611 reds, about 545 from Valpolicella of which 257 are Amarone, 228 Ripasso, 30 Recioto. Their search function isn't great and I couldn't search for Valpolicella Classico without getting "Valpolicella Amarone/Ripasso Classico" in the search results as well. So if you calculate the remaining bottles from a total of 545, 30 of them should be Valpolicella Classico.

@@NoSediment The new-to-me grape variety is what made me connect it with the topic. It's has a D.O.C. band, says "SICILIA" on it with a vintage date. labled as "Nero d'Avola Syrah" but lists the break down as "red wine" 55% N D'Avola -45% Syrah from "Feudo Zirtari". If I was more handy with wine resources I'd have looked up "Fossalta Di Portogruaro-Italia to see where that trail leads.🤷 Mystery wine is a consistent theme when my father is involved and left to his own devices, lol. From what analytics I've found searches ranked over time dropped significantly over time. Feudo Zirtari doesn't seem to have done that well in the U.S. for whatever reason.

You probably have a problem with the tannins and at times raging acidity in may Italian wines. You may want to try a Ciro Rosso from Calabria or a Negroamaro from Apulia as they are darker than most Italian reds, but without the bite which you probably find objectionable. Some viewer also mentioned Nero d'Avola which are from Sicily not to my taste as they are very dark and full bodied, but you may enjoy it.
@NoSediment
@NoSediment 10 ай бұрын
I actually understand You, and this is the reason why some producers refuse to make Ripasso. Because they say that only the harsher tannins get extracted in those later stages and therefore can often be hard or even bitter. But I also think it depends on the producer, and how gentle they are with the leftover pomace and how much Amarone is added. 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, great that You know Your wines, I also rarely will choose Ripasso. 🍷😅

Agnes, I think some of your viewers were sampling a little too much wine whilst watching you. One viewer a wine buyer had an Avignonesi from this area which of course is possible as there are Piedmontese producers who make wine in Tuscany, but I think they got their Italian names mixed up. And perhaps they need to retake a course in WSET. The other person has me thoroughly confused. I think they weren't so much saying it was from this area, but that they liked Nero d'Avola which I thought was exclusively planted in Sicily. Then they say it is labeled Sicily, but Portogruaro is definitely not in Sicily; it is almost into Friuli which would be out of the zone. On a less academic note you are doing very well with your V's which I guess might be difficult for you, I think you lapsed once though. Someone may mistake you for a Neapolitan, however, as in the old Neapolitan accent V is pronounce like a W. It is very cute especially when you say walley.

We all, with no exceptions, we all make mistakes, and that is completely fine. And some of my mistakes have even been recorded here in the videos, for all to see. 🤷‍♀️ Wine world is so large and diverse there is no way that people will know or remember it all. And I really don’t want to be someone who discourages to leave comments, unless they are rude or offensive. I don’t see that as a problem, if someone mistakes grape variety or producer with something else. Nero d’Avola for example is not exclusive to Sicily and is actually widely grown in other Italian southern winemaking regions. 🤷‍♀️ please, please let’s not make fun of people here. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

This is not the first time you have misunderstood my humour, I'm sorry for that it shan't happen again. As for someone claiming that they had an Avignonesi Veronese wine when they clearly don't make one might cause someone to search it out in vain. As for the other person they were all messed up a wine from Sicily would not say Portogruaro as they claimed. Do you know where Portogruaro is? I am a certified history teacher with a specialty in Italian history. I studied under two M.W.'s and was highly regarded for my knowledge of Italian wines. I am descended from a family of Italian wine merchants who were purveyors of fine wine to the Royal Bourbon court of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. Nero d'Avola may be planted in small amounts in Southern Italy but it is regarded first and foremost as a Sicilian wine . I would never dream of discussing Latvian history with you so I shall thank you for not making light of my area of expertise.@@NoSediment .

I gave up on trying italian wines untill i found Amarone. In my country, Italian wine is not so popular and a niche market. Since then, i only drink Amarone and ripasso for italian wines. My take: AMARONE is best drink whwn it is aged atlease 10 years or if its reserva. Yes the price is expensive and require you to trust your instict. What i can share, the worst tasting amarone for me was Ceasari. The wine is just dead. Second option for me is Ripasso but not all ripasso are created equally. Generally most ripasso can taste bad. Dont have the assumption that goor amarone makes good ripasso. Big NO NO. Best ripasso for me is La Casetta ( they use skin from reccioto and not amarone production) and Masi Brolo Camporfiorin d 'oro. These two are the very best. Enjoy!

Great addition, thank You. My only argument is that Amarone should be aged. I agree that it most definitely can age, however, because of how it is produced, I think it is enjoyable quite early in its life as well. And often times VA will increase significantly if aged long. 🙈 but of course it all depends greatly on producer! Thank You for Your comment and cheers! 🍷
