Hey guys! Here's a quick exploration of the 400 and 550 level of Cerro Gordo's Union Mine. In this video, I go down to retrieve some dynamite boxes and add them to our museum here. Each piece I'm able to add to the museum is another piece that people can enjoy. The museum keeps adding up and I'm really excited that more and more people are getting to visit!
Let me know in the comments any other quick videos you'd want to see around this abandoned 'ghost town'!

Those are explored mines. You can even get some gadgets to chartograph the cave, upload the data online for other people to access and safely find your way out. Not to mention, its just a mine not some catacombs. He grew up going to those mines so he probably knows them inside out

First, it is clear the amount of effort you put in to recover artifacts. Mind blown! You literally inch up, holding the dynamite box! Second, my heart stopped when the video went dark because it is pitch black! Third, I love the little impromptu I get dibs on your motorbike conversation, as you go down the mine. 😂😂😂 I realize it is just in jest, but let's hope that scenario NEVER happens 🙏🙏🙏 Thanks for the surprise video this morning ❤️

What would be really cool is a 3d scan of the mine so you could build a millimeter accurate model of the mine. Time team posted a video of them doing that with an Iron Age fugue that was pretty interesting. I don’t think the tech is that expensive. You could probably find a KZfaqr who could do it for you. Love the channel. Bob

I'd be interested in using a 3D scan of the 700 level to see where it is in relation to the mountain to find the closest path out of the mountain. It's a mile of elevation above the access road, so 700 had to have gotten pretty close, and modern tools could make easy work of that.

@anothersaabstory1237
@anothersaabstory1237 2 жыл бұрын
As a surveyor experienced in terrestrial 3D-scanning, that would be an absolutely massive job. Given the low/no light conditions and carved out rock formations, you wouldn't be able to use a faster phase-scanner that would use photo-referencing as targets, so you'd be stuck with a traditional time of flight type of scanner with round targets. Just getting targets/reference down into the tunnel for geo-referencing through the lift-shaft would be hard, especially getting further and further down. You would get massive angular error build-up from multiple short range shots etc. I'm not saying it's impossible to do, but it's a behemoth of a task given the way the mines are built. If they were built in straight and level sections it would be 10x more effective. I don't know if there's technology out there for scanning from a backpack having only an IMU as a "navigator" as you move into the mine from the lift-shaft, but it would also offer limited range in terms of how long it could track your movement with accuracy and confidence.

6:54 interesting that they knew their mythology well: *Atlas* was the *Giant* that *Hercules* found holding up the sky on his shoulders for more than a millennium. Hercules, a human with the strength of a giant, took the sky from Atlas while he went to get the _golden_ apples of Hesperides. So when a giant goes 🧨 mining, a human holds up the sky/ceiling and vice-versa.
@andanssas
@andanssas 2 жыл бұрын
An afterthought: dynamite allowed the golden vein to be found but sometimes it also made tunnels to collapse, giants could hold them up but couldn't get into the smaller ones, that's why both "species" were needed.
