Dr James Fox explores how the artistic life of three great Japanese cities shaped the country's attitudes to past and present, east and west, and helped forge the very idea of Japan itself. The first city he explores is Kyoto, the country's capital for almost a thousand years. We get to explore and understand how the flowering of classical culture produced many great treasures of Japanese art, including "The Tale of Genji", considered to be the first novel ever written. We also venture to the city of Edo, where Tokyo now stands. Dr James Fox continues by visiting Tokyo's more contemporary side and meets street photographer Daido Moriyama and one of the founders of the world famous Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata, whose anime work in the form of films has helped establish anime as a powerful and serious art form.
In this landmark series, art historian Dr James Fox takes us on a captivating journey through the art and history of one of the world's most enigmatic cultures. Travelling the length of Japan, James explores every inch from the falling cherry blossoms to the dazzling modern cities. Along the way James will discover for himself the importance of art and aesthetics to the Japanese life and culture. He will learn the secrets behind brush-painting, block-printing, bonsai-trimming as well as the importance of Japanese cities and their impact on the country as a whole.

Dr Fox did a brilliant job with overwhelming knowledge, dedication, and passion. I’m utterly impressed. When such a charismatic intellectual covers Japan it’s a treat beyond treats! Wish he had more documentaries.

Outstanding program. But, sumimasen, please, Dr. Fox, try to pronounce the Japanese "a" correctly. It's "ah" as in wand, not the "a" in wang. So, wah-bee sah-bee, and kah-mee for kami. You do a lot of excellent vids on Japanese culture......much appreciated!

why do the producers/presenters of almost all documentaries on Japan, this included, not bother to get the pronunciation right?

Even the tea ceremony came from China. Also doesn't anyone check the spelling of the subtitles?

No but they also serve tea. Japan’s is a bit more than that. Theres more wrong than that with this horrible sourced info. There was once a kingdom between china and korea. This kingdom fell to china. The people friendly with korea fled through it to japan and re established their government

The subtitles are auto generated. So no, no one checks them

This is a beautiful documentary, without a doubt. But the ghost of Japanese militarism is being lifted from the dumping ground of history by US imposition. In doing so, American rulers restore the imbalance between barbarism and civilization that existed in Japan 100 years ago. When following a path, the Japanese are focused, dedicated and tireless. Japanese militarism is not worse than the militarism of other countries, but it can be extremely brutal, bloodthirsty, methodical and ruthless. Its awakening will do no good to Japanese society nor to Japan's neighbors who have historical reasons to fear Bushido.
