I finally made it to the Massive Scranton Lace Company Factory. My friend Travis and I ventured around this maze of a place. We spent about 3hrs there and still didn't get to see everything. We also weren't alone as we came upon some guys doing some strange things with balloons. I also used my DJI Phantom 3 drone for some aerial shots. Enjoy the video and read below for more information about the factory.
The company was established by the Scranton Board of Trade as the Scranton Lace Curtain Manufacturing Company in 1890 and was incorporated on June 15, 1897. The name Scranton Lace Company became standardized in 1916 when the Scranton Lace Curtain Manufacturing Company and one of its subsidiaries combined their operations. On May 13, 1958, the company changed its name to The Scranton Lace Corporation, but soon thereafter reverted to using the name The Scranton Lace Company as its official title. From 1916 to 2002 the company remained the first and largest known producer of Nottingham Lace in the United States.
The company was the world leader in Nottingham lace and also produced tablecloths, napkins, valances, and shower curtains, among many other types of lace items. During the 1940s, the company teamed up with subsidiaries such as Victory Parachutes, Inc. and Sweeney Bros. to manufacture parachutes and camouflage netting. Though the company prospered well into the 1950s but risky investments involving Hal Roach Studios and the fledgling television industry placed the company in financial peril and eventually led to its closure in 2002. Despite the factory being one of area's biggest employers, it closed in 2002 with the company's vice president telling its employees, mid-shift, that the facility was closing "effective immediately".
The facility featured a theater, bowling alley, gymnasium, infirmary, clock tower (that is a city landmark and has a Meneely cast iron bell) and other amenities.
On January 31, 2011, the Scranton City Council gave final approval to Lace Building Affiliates to redevelop the Scranton Lace Complex industrial factory located at 1315 Mylert Avenue.
On December 30, 2011, the company's abandoned building was featured in the pilot episode of the Abandoned TV series.
The factory complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The Scranton Lace Company Kingston Mill at Kingston, New York was listed in 2013.

My mom worked at the Lace works..in her teens and twenties...before she married my dad...she told me how wonderful a place it was to work...the lunchroom had full meals daily like a restaurant...an employee lounge...and they had a bowling alley and she played on the softball team there. When she needed beautiful lace gifts or something for her house she'd buy it there..nice memories..she said they treated employees with respect and dignity.

My paternal grandmother worked here for many years. She passed away in 2002 at 83yrs old. My parents still have up the lace curtains she got from here in her old bedroom & kitchen AND they're in GREAT condition! My grandmother lived with my parents in her own little "inlaw suite" on the 2nd floor until her passing. My maternal grandmother, who's 97yrs young, moved in with my parents a few years ago after my grandfather passed. I wish I asked my grandmother what it was like working here or just anything about the history of her growing up. I was thinking of her today & wanted to see if they had any videos of Scranton & the lace Factory when it was in its prime. I want a clearer memory of the holiday window display that the old Globe Store used to put up. I remember being amazed by it all. The buildings in Scranton are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen. The masonic temple, the court houses, old banks, are just some of the remarkable structures built. I hate seeing them ruined or demolished when at one time they stood tall, proud & busy with the amount of the people coming and going. I wish I could go back in time to 1950/1960 & experience Scranton.

Viewing this now after your most recent visit to the Scranton Lace Company. This was an excellent explore. Glad that you documented the interior while you were able to access the site. Appears to be a fair amount of deterioration between 2016 and 2019. Good that they have moved ahead with repurposing before there is further decay. Excellent👍☺

I just finished this video after watching the 2nd one you made first and when you said that you were so shy to talk on camera you weren't joking Jay @JP Videos, you never really talked behind it either, only 5 times or so you whispered to the guy you were with and saying something about the balls in the bowling alley.. Watching your channel for the last 2-3 years you're a force to be reckoned with now, you are not afraid to talk now that is for sure. What a great set of videos brother.

That was weird lace factory. Didn't see any lace around. Saw fabric, I wonder if they made lace out of that. Very interesting, such a huge factory, but I guess they supplied all the stores in the USA. Quit a large facility, very interesting. I thought there would be old boxes of lace sitting around. You sure do wonderful finds JP, just amazing to me. Many thanks.

The women worked in the sewing factories, while their men and their sons worked in the coal mines. It was a way of life that went on for decades and resulted in many black lung settlements for the families of the men who died of black lung from working in the mines.

I wanted to watch this video again since the new one you just did. I can't imagine the MILLIONS, maybe BILLIONS of dollars it would cost to build a company that big today. It seems like people back then thought more of their employees than companies do today. Everything including buildings are made so cheaply anymore. Such a cool company. Must have been wonderful with all the amenities they had for their employees. Wish it was still open. It would mean a lot of jobs for people today. HILLARY CLINTON'S GRANDFATHER WORKED THERE. "Clinton has often mentioned her immigrant grandfather in speeches. 'My grandfather, like so many of his generation, came to this country as a young child, as an immigrant, went to work at age 11 in the lace mills in Scranton,' Clinton has said in the past."

as a very young kid my mother took me there to see my grandpa and his friend, the friend had a dog. Don't remember too much because it was just an office I saw, but I only saw the office 3 times. That was most likely before the place closed. I would have been 4 or 5 when I last went there

My heart BREAKS seeing that huge old HISTORIC factory abandoned. Probably has something to do with NAFTA and the horrible consequences of AMERICA losing so many manufacturing jobs. I like the Doughnuts and Pastries rack and the Beauty/Hair Salon place. I wonder if they were for the factory employees or a later development. Those Scranton Lace invoices and index cards with store names, like Woolworths are historic papers and the Library of Congress stores things like that for history. Too bad nobody sent those papers to them. What a LOSS of history.

"Hugh Simpson Rodham (1879-1965) Hillary Rodham Clinton’s father, Hugh Ellsworth Rodham, was the son of Hugh Simpson Rodham and Hannah Jones Rodham. Clinton knew her grandfather and spent time with him growing up. After coming to the United States and settling in Pennsylvania with his family, he started working at the Scranton Lace Company (known for its Nottingham lace products) “when he was still a boy and ended up a supervisor five decades later.”*** His 50 years at the lace company earned him a gold watch. Clinton wrote of her grandfather: “He was a kind and proper man, who proudly carried his gold watch on a chain and wore a suit with suspenders every day.”
