Back in April, RetroManCave held a charity auction for these IBM NetVista PCs he'd restored. Wanting to support the cause, I bid on one of them -- and won! So let's check out the IBM NetVista Type 6792 from 2001, running a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 CPU and 16MB Nvidia Vanta graphics.

I was a graphic designer at IBM at that time. They provided me with an “Intellistation” of the same vintage, I had some screaming graphics cards in it, tons of ram, and the IT dept. later replaced the main chip every time there was a budget, before finally decommissioning the machine. No Ethernet at IBM then, it had Token RIng card, and kept designs on Iomega Zip disks per corporate compliance, but that later changed to a windows network drive. Lotus Notes, Lotus 123, Illustrator and Photoshop were my daily routine. All IBM machines of this vintage are tanks. We used to have them render videos for days with no crashes. Good times.

The IBM NetVista series was GARBAGE regardless of what was under the hood. The hard drive bracket liked to poke holes in the ribbon cables unless you folded it just right, and they just generally had poor build quality all around. I had to support a school network with over 200 of these machines spread over 3 campuses. I lost track of how many I dumpstered after stripping them of usable parts. They were junk when new and, by the time I inherited them, were on their last legs.
@WardenWolf
@WardenWolf 3 жыл бұрын
@@HappyBeezerStudios They went downhill FAST when Lenovo bought them. The biggest problem was they kept using the same chassis and cooling systems, long after they became completely insufficient for the chips of the day. And while their competitors grew sleeker, they remained clunky with ergonomics rooted in the 90's. After they started rolling out new form factors, things got somewhat better, but Lenovos have a reputation in the IT industry for quirkiness and weird firmware bugs, and horrible customer support. I personally won't buy one; seen way too many problems with them.

The sound that played when you ran Unreal Tournament (And crashed the machine) for the first time was Sensura (Like Aureal 3D and EAX) 3D stereo sound being used by that Soundmax intergrated sound chip. I used to own a Hercules Muse XL 4.0 PCI soundcard which on games that supported A3D and Sensura would boot with that sound.

The best build in the game does not take too long to learn. By going through the steps listed in this guide, you will be able to take the next steps in your build. You will be able to create the following build which will take anywhere from a half hour to 45 minutes of practice. You can use any style of build that provides more variety in play. There are many other styles of build, but these will come into being when you get older. Your first style will be to play the game on your smartphone. This starts with your phone. In this step you need to pick the easiest mobile device you have to develop the game. You will probably start with a laptop or tablet. This will be similar to in the following sections, the most important thing you will want to do. This is going to be your phone, not your iPad. You may have to install Flash on your phone either of your most recent devices. You will need your iPod and your other iPod touch. This is how you build an iPhone. Step 1 - Setup the iPhone Before you start building the iPhone, you will need to set up your device or your phone. When building your iPhone, you will need: A Bluetooth enabled

I still don't know anything about old computers outside of this channel(heck I hardly anything about new ones tbh), and I really have no interest in collecting them or for them. But even then, your videos are such a blast to watch. Always fun, informative, and just an all around good time. A definite day brightener. A pick me up, if you would. You bring such a passion and joy that I always enjoy your videos. I'm looking forward to more and more blurbs as well! Thanks for your hard work in getting these out. A lot of us really appreciate it.

Hi Clint, I'm a long term watcher, and love your stuff. I wanted to let you know that I work for a Data Processing site in Plymouth UK, for the national mail carrier. We used those NetVista machines for several years before our I.T. company was forced to upgrade our systems. It turned out that for the last two years we were using NetVista computers, the I.T. company had to source parts on the internet second hand whenever they broke. We ended up getting Lenovo machines as replacements running Windows 7. Our Data Processing site uses about 150 computers, and every one of the was NetVista's for about five years.

24:08 - Holy cow, there's a sound I never thought I'd hear again. I once had that happen while trying to start Unreal as a kid, and it scared the shit out of me. It had never played before, and mysteriously never played again. It made me somewhat leery of starting the game for a while. This type of thing (Games you know like the back of your hand suddenly doing strange things they've never done before) was the subject of many nightmares back then, so for years It was one of those "Did that actually happen?" types of memories. It's neat to see it happen here, and know why (Thanks to Daemonlord X's comment)

I got a set of systems for different eras, but for each I have more compatible parts. And sometimes the urge to test them all overcomes me. That is the moment when I want to test 6 CPUs, stock and with 2-3 OC settings in about 40 games, programs and benchmarks. Yes, that takes about a week of pure testing. And I mean only the testing, not dialing in the oc or stuff like sleeping or eating.

I worked in the IT department at a Mid-Atlantic bank that had these style NetVistas at the customer service desks, all running OS/2 Warp. When they merged with another bank we had to upgrade the software image on all the machines at 300 branches. We used IBM's wonderful (at the time) SID process to have the branch employees reimage all the machines. One machine in each branch was the SID server with the master image, and each workstation had a customized SID boot disk. On one Saturday we had the employees boot the workstations off the SID boot diskette which downloaded the Warp installation from the server and installed it. The process worked surprisingly well.
