Exploring the Mount Saint Helens Backcountry with Neighbor Al

In this video, neighbor Al (82 years young) and I hike from Coldwater Lake to the Johnston Ridge Observatory on the North side of Mount Saint Helens in Washington State. Along our journey, we pass through the town of Toutle, cross the Toutle River, and stop by the Mount Saint Helens Science and Learning Center at Coldwater Lake. We leave from the Hammocks Trailhead and make our way along the Boundary Trail to the Loowit Viewpoint, then eventually arrive at our final destination, Johnston Ridge Observatory. During the filming of this video, the observatory could only be reached by foot due to a washout along highway 504 which closed the road.

Im 27, i also have a older friend who i like to go on hikes with. there is something about connecting with the older generation that really grounds me and keeps me in the moment. they're wisdom perhaps

What a nice memory you both made with one another. I'm impressed that Al made it all the way there and back. With his history of hiking to the summit, it's no wonder he wanted to come along with you. It was lovely to come with you, from the comfort of my home. I'm looking forward to your special on the eruption and also seeing how much better things improve after you update Al's plumbing. What a gorgeous area, Id love to have a friend as agile as your friend Al to go on hikes with. Nothing like a good hike especially to see a volcano. How epic to see Mount St Helens .Well done the two of you. Al will live a long time as he is physical fit, eats good , spends time in the outdoors . Watching from . Ontario Canada

Diego you found a good friend in All, he has found a good friend in you. I am impressed with all. The very reason he is in the shape he is in he never got stuck on a no which is the very reason so many of a leaser age can't they give up far to early in life. Age is just a number. I am with All, I believe in living my life enjoying my life while living it. We don't don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing. No matter the age if we don't keep active it will effect our mobility health. We were given life to live it not let it pass us by. I would love to have All for a neighbour not only could we go hiking he would be an interesting conversational, that certainly isn't that easy to come across in today's world. For what ever reason I can't subscribe . I certainly will watch when I get the opportunity as I love that kind of living, hiking, the outdoors has been my life. Thanks for sharing so enjoyable to watch.

Hey - thanks for the nice job on Mt. St. Helens and up to the top where its closed after recent washout - to traffic. Ive been wanting to see what it looks like up there for years! Next time you go Hiking, provide a staf for Al. A staf is a real winner, especially going uphill & very useful for a bum knee, when going downhill.

Great seeing you and Al man hanging out and hiking. One thing that will worked for increaseing water pressure is a pressure tank it helps increase the psi and it works without power.

Wonder how long Johnston Ridge observatory has been closed and when that wash out took place? Haven’t been up there for a few years, but agree; if you can make it, it’s truly a majestic view. I’m 40 miles SW of Portland and on a clear day can see Mt St Helens.
