Funny, I just rewatched this a couple weeks ago, and I can vouch: Aside from a few effects, it does totally hold up. And if anything, its action/horror/comedy mix made it feel refreshing with how so many movies these days feel like they have to be totally grimdark/serious. (Relatedly, I'm not interested in the new Mummy at all for exactly that reason. It looks silly in all the wrong ways.)

I agree that Mummy Returns has a lot of fun moments, but they DID really let the CGI get out of control. There's honestly no excuse for just how terrible the Scorpion King at the end looks. Even at the time, people considered it embarrassingly bad to the point it nearly ruins the finale. (Hell, some thought it would kill off The Rock's then-burgeoning film career, but at least it wasn't THAT bad.)

Childhood Classic. My mom brought me to this when I was a kid. Enjoyed Brendan Frasier so much she decided to see him on Broadway years later. She ended up meeting him after the show and showed me a picture they took together. It was funny because by that point I was a young adult and was like wtf? So childhood AND adult classic I guess.

Ebert, like any critic you can name, had his hits and misses. This is after all a man who panned "Blade Runner" when it came out and only years later when he revisited it changed his mind. Critics are still human and they can, and will, trash movies you love and love movies you hate. Which is why I always say don't listen to them and decide what it is you want to see based on what you like.

@@ufoe20011 Exactly. My brother and I watched them on PBS in the early 1980's to decide what movies to watch. If they said thumbs down we paid our hard earned teenage money to watch the movie. They always came back years later to "revisit" the movie and change their minds after they saw they were wrong.

My late grandmother who was always fascinated in ancient Egyptian culture, upon seeing this spared no time in buying the VHS and showing it to me and my parents. At 4 years old It was my introduction to Egyptian culture and started my curiosity in history and myths with both being presented and firearms with Brandon Fraser and his awesome arsenal. The sequel was and still is amazing. While the third wasn't quite as good as the first two, I did enjoy it with the only exception being Maria Bello instead of Rachel Weisz as Evelyn, not a horrible performance but she wasn't Evelyn. The Scorpion King spin off starring Dwayne the Rock Johnson in my opinion was a great action adventure film, although it felt like two different characters from The Mummy Returns vs The Scorpion King, hard to explain why.

I will always love this movie. I remember seeing it on VHS as a kid when it came out (or maybe DVD I can't remember) and being both beyond fucking terrified and thrilled. The horror scenes, especially to a little 6 y/o me, were genuinely terrifying, and gave me nightmares for weeks. But I still loved the romance and campy adventure side to it. People like to rip on this movie cause it can be goofy, without understanding that it was intentionally made to reflect the movies of the past. No matter what, this movie is damn near perfect for me, bad CGI and all. Moments are truly breathtaking, and the suspense is to thick and rich. Just a shame modern day (Dark) Universal can't recapture the magic this movie brought us back then. Truly one of the greats.

To be fair this new one is trying to be it's own thing, the only similarity the two will probably have in common is the fact that there is a Mummy in both. Also it will just be the first in a whole new monster verse, witch honestly has me far more worried.

RogueDragon05 from the trailer we already know that the Tom cruise character causes all the problems because he releases the mummy and the mummy does practically the same they it did in the 1999 version. And I bet the Tom cruise character lives to the end of the film. So how are they making it their own? They are clearly going for broke.

"The film is not perfect but I love it for what it is instead of hating it for what it isn't" - Well said. More people should follow your line of thought. That's why I dislike ratings of any kind. Just the observations about the movie speak for themselves (which this channel does well). Unfortunately, the simplest opinion is always the easiest to spread and people don't often give a second thought to the work that goes into making these movies and individual scenes, designs, etc.

There are a lot of films I love but some people hate like the 2001 Lara Croft Tomb Raider film, I grew up playing the original games and it captures the look and feel of them perfectly. Yeah. I love the ship and character designs of Episode I (some of my favorites in the entire saga, and I think they are very well thought out and nuanced, despite some people thinking they stand out compared to the original movies). I love the choreography of the Smallville fight in Man of Steel and set pieces like the first flight or the intro. I always want a movie to try its best at something, even if it ends up "failing", rather than being just another competent, but generic movie.

The Mummy is one of my favorite childhood movies, and as such I can't see it as anything but perfect. Heck, I rewatched it a week ago along with the sequel - not _sequels_, because *_there's no third movie_*, except _maybe_ the fishing scene with Brendan Fraser - and I still love them both (though I like the italian dub better because, again, nostalgia). It was also one of the first movies to freak me out. The mummy's awakening traumatized me for a long time.

Three stars out of four is about right for a film like this. It ain't Taxi Driver, it ain't The Longest Day, but it rocks from one end to the other. I remember when my local grocery store had a VHS section and this movie was one of them. I remember wanting to see it so bad and begged my parents to get until they finally gave in and got for me. There were definitely moments with Imhotep that scared the ever living crap outta me. Like his transformation into the mummy where he had scarabs being poured on him, the reveal of his mummified body, the guy with bad vision trying to find his way out of the tomb and Imhotep stalks him, and a couple scenes where he drains the life out of some guys and you see their bodies. those scenes were TERRIFYING to me back then. I haven't seen in a long time, but I think those moments still give me the creeps, but I still love this movie to this day.

Didn't know there went so much work in the Mummy movies. I appreciate the movie even more now. I watch the the first and second movie every year. It never gets old for me. It sure holds up to today's standards even better than some movies do. I had a crush on Odet Fehr when I was little while all the other girls loved Brendan Fraser. After almost 20 years, Odeth Fehr still looks gorgeous to me :)

This movie is great because it knows what it is and has fun with the premise. Brendan Frazier needs to make a come back. He might not be as young as he used to be, but his role in the TV series "The Affair" proved that he can be a good dramatic actor!

The problem is that, with the exception of The Mummy, modern studio execs & directors fail to realize what made the originals s popular all these years. One of my favourite movies. Was I the only one that got eyesight thing. I remember being in the theater with my girlfriend. At the scene where Imhotep calls Evie Anck Su Namun , she said, " That doesn't make sense. She doesn't even look like her. " Since she wore glasses, I reminded her of the previous scene of the glasses getting stepped on and them told her to take hers off and look around. After she did this, she understood Imhotep's mistake. The movie makes a point, during the card game, to point out how bad Burns' vision was, I wish Imhotep would have more bad eyesight moments.

I agree. C.S. Lewis said something that should apply here (and I am paraphrasing badly): Professional reviewers should not be allowed to review subjects they don't understand or don't care for - at least in an official way. If you don't like or respect, say, science fiction or chick flicks, how can your analysis and opinion rise above your bias? To be objective, you would have to ignore your strengths and go with the absolute basics, which may be entirely unfair to a film (book, genre, play, etc.) which is directed at a particular audience. There's no way Siskel and Ebert love and appreciate all kinds of films. Would they have liked Street Fighter? I think not, but neither do I think the creators of that movie took themselves that seriously. I admit I had some really good laughs watching it in the theater, but that was because I wasn't expecting anything serious. I just had fun. And I judged it based on that. Like Darth Vader (above) said. I don't like to listen to critics before I see a movie. I'll let my own self judge and then compare it to what others think.
