What began with a collection of 17,000 pencils turned into an entire back yard of sculptures and buildings made from over 90,000 bottles.

This is one of your more memorable destinations, because of Grandma Prisbrey's story, and because there's an effort underway to restore and preserve her bottle village. Well done Bethany and Drew, as usual!

Fantastic video! I've never heard of this before, but I will definitely be checking it out! The stories from the guide -- someone who was there while Grandma Presbrey was building this -- were really interesting. I love the quote, "Anyone can do anything with a million dollars. Look at Disney. But it takes more than money to make something out of nothing." That is soooo true!

Reminds of a place in Idylwyld owned by an elderly woman in 1990 - all I recall is the mascot of the place was "Peg-leg Smith - the Buccaneer" and the displays she had made with bottles. Grandma Prisbey's is near another artist's place - Old Trapper's Lodge i Woodland Hills.

Cool video! I had to sub! Found you when searching for info about Grandma Prisbrey's Bottle Village. I live near there and had never heard of it until I went to order pizza from a new Pizza Guy's in Chatsworth. Never had their pizza and wanted to try it. On their website they have info about the local interests and curiosities. When I read "Grandma Prisbrey's Bottle Village" I had to know more, and I'm not disappointed! Going to look into visiting the place myself. 10 minutes away for 22 years and never knew! My best friends are a *block* away! One of my favorite places is the Watts Towers in Los Angeles that have a similar vibe. The place is utterly magical! Being there is totally different from seeing pictures and I can't miss the Bottle Village for the same reason! I would hope that it could be there forever, but nothing lasts forever, So we humans just keep on building this stuff. It's hard to find "dumps" that you can just rummage through these days but I dream of building my own little backyard curiosity.

If its a historical landmark, Are there not funds to help preserve it? IE: carefully rebuild the walls that fell during that earthquake, replace roofing materials etc?
@OddityOdysseys
@OddityOdysseys 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott! To our knowledge, funding from FEMA was pulled in the late '90s. The Preserve Bottle Village Committee is a nonprofit organization that has been hard at work to continue preservation efforts and we plan on staying in touch with them. Thanks for watching! :)

@@OddityOdysseys Sorry, I'm from Canada. Up here, If a Place has been made into a historical Landmark, there are funds in place under the Parks branch (If I'm not mistaken) to help with upkeep and some repairs. But, at the same time, its a two edged sword, as you are also not allowed to "Modernize" the site beyond What it was, or you can do in an Unobtrusive way. (no Electric furnaces, Central A/C, etc.) Unless its needed for a public area, such as a washroom. and even then, IF possible, they like that stuff to be as hidden as they can. The Funding might not be a lot, but sometimes just having that funding for a few spots has led to more funding from other areas.
