In this small series I am in Colorado with Edwin ( / edwins22 ) and visit abandoned mine related facilities.

I really hope you 2 are armed in some way. There are plenty of bear, snakes, coyotes etc. I live in rural Tennessee. I'm not walking out of my yard without protection. lol

I love your Colorado videos. I can vicariously "feel" the atmosphere (altitude, comfortable summer temps, the fresh smell of the forest and the views that never get boring).. It's been a long time since I've been there, but you never forget the beautiful feeling of being in Colorado. Thanks!

I work at the current open pit mine at cripple creek. It’s a really cool place and I’ve explored a lot of stuff inside the mine. The mine with the tiered plant with all the machines stripped out is called the Mary Nevin. We’re always finding old artifacts at work. I swear I saw you guys flying your drone by the roadside on my way home from work.

5:31 Ball Mill, 9:26 Head Frame with Sheave wheel, 9:36 Main Hoist, 9:48 The top band is the brake, the next band inside it is the clutch for up. These types of hoist had power in up only and used the small brake pedal at the rear to slow the down speeds. OR they could de-clutch the power source, pull the up lever and use the friction of the gear train as a speed reducing governor. 10:35 Is a two stage air compressor belt driven by that large flat wheel. 10:45 also a hoist 10:53 The two cylinders are visible, the big one feeds into the small one boosting the air pressure up so it can run drills. Ingersoll Rand is clearly printed on the base. 12:01 is the two drums on a double drum hoist with the Herring Bone drive gear. Foreground are two ore buckets used down in the mine for smaller shafts (Winses). Extreme left is a large DC electric motor. DC (Direct Current) was used for things that needed speed control. PWM has not been invented yet. In the right ore bucket we find gold ore. The rusty look is from iron. (Old miner saying: "Gold rides an iron horse.") So they looked for iron rust and gold is usually near by. 15:01 Natural log walls chinked with concrete. (Originally using just dirt mud.) 15:33 Two drum hoist with wooden lagging. (for the wire ropes to roll up on and reduce the wear.) Not trying to be a pest, I just grew up with all of this. Great channel!

Trying to imagine what it was like living in these towns and going to work in a mine like that all day, every day until one day no more. Gives me nostalgic and a little bit sad emotions. These places are a reminder that nothing lasts forever. But the ever changing beauty of what we build may last the longest of it all, at least in the eye of the beholder. Thanks for showing us that place and its beauty!

I was born in Denver in 1970. I used to live in Georgetown Co, a very old mining town. The movie Every which way but loose staring Clint Eastwood was filmed in a scene in an alley in Georgetown. What the movie hahah

The Molly Kathleen gold mine tour is probably the best you will take.

I’ve taken that tour three times, and it is fascinating! First when my kids were little, then when my grandsons were little, and again when they were teens. They have made lots of improvements and added a few things to the tour over the years, but dropping down and coming up 1,000 feet is the main thrill!

@@fredfarquar8301 I thought I saw a recent vid where they had reopened the mine and were taking ore out. Maybe I misinterpreted it. Those big rooms and winces were not on the tour I took many years ago nor was the drilling exhibition. My guide was an out of work miner begging for tips. I felt safe in that mine but would have little interest in going into an abandoned mine like these KZfaqrs. I went in one in Central City that only went back 75 feet and ended, a prospect hole really. I felt ripped off. There is one in Ouray where they ride a train back into it. Never did that one. The Atlantic-Pacific tunnel in Georgetown would be interesting as it is 1.5 miles long. Maybe caved in now?

@@rogersmith7396 The last time I took the Molly Kathleen tour, they let you ride a pneumatic engine train inside the mine, and had displays of various ores that were found in the mines in the area; that was all new and well worth it. About 40 years ago, the Bobtail Mine in Central City gave tours where they took you in ~1/4 mile on ‘gang cars’ pulled by a donkey, and had a drill set up, but all the rock surfaces had been covered with Spray-Crete, so you never got to see the rock they had mined through, and, yeah, kinda felt like a ripoff there, too. The Phoenix Mine just west of Idaho Springs gives tours and is pretty good; they show some thin unmined veins that have visible gold. Personally, I’d love to go into some of the Central City mines and explore around, but getting too old to hack it any more. There is a group working on opening up one of the mines there (maybe the Hunter-Bates mine?); they have a YT channel where they give updates and progress periodically. (Can’t remember the channel name right off hand, though) Hope you have a great day!

@@rogersmith7396 Yeah, but they have a bulkhead not too far from the portal that prevents going any further, though they have to allow drainage; they tried sealing it entirely in I think the 1930’s, but the water pressure built up too much and it burst, causing some minor flooding and a gouged out area on the other side of the valley!

Comment on missing machinery: The US government forced all nearly all gold mining to shut down when World War II started. A lot of mines closed permanently and iron and steel equipment was scrapped to feed the war production effort. There once was a hundred times as much equipment in those hills compare to anything you saw remaining, either in the buildings or in the museums.
