SCP Foundation: *Points to a pile of mulch* "This is why you don't destroy anomalies!" GOC: *Points to an Earth eaten by bugs* "And this is why you DO!"

One of the things that bugs me (ha) about SCP lore is how inconsistent the Foundation is about destroying SCPs when absolutely necessary. Sometimes they practice pragmatism and do it when they absolutely must. Sometimes they let this shit happen (in an alternate timeline but still) High level staff seem to preach to never destroy them ever yet I can think of plenty that the Foundation are actively trying to destroy with fervor, some of which are way less harmful than ones they insist on containing like the wish-granting fly that makes you rot into maggots after you agree to the deal. Gruesome and scary but hardly world ending, and the SCPF want to destroy it.

Foundation Loyalists: "You destroyed a perfectly normal anomalous chair and now look at it! You hurt its feelings! Its crying!" GOC Separatists: "You harbored a fast-multiplying mutating insect race and let it go out on walkies? Who's the bad guy here?"

@Ruosong Gao I remember this SCP which showed this example off perfectly. It was something about a town of tiny humans who acted like normal people, the staff wanted to try and protect them and make sure they were taken care of well. But the guy in charge didn't want that to happen he wanted to do the bare minimum and almost let them starve and die out at times despite how much the staff argued against him. Eventually the town of little people had a much smaller population of only a suburb of 6 houses left, and the little people begged the researchers to give them more food and to help them but since they had to listen to the guy in charge, they couldn't do a thing about it. I don't remember what happened to the town but they either died out and we're classified as neutralized, or they still did the bare minimum to the town and it's still alive. But that SCP really did a good job showing how certain individuals in charge typically don't have the same ideas as other members in the foundation. They aren't all under the guide of the same group, they're just individual teams working on they're own SCPs.

That was my thought too. Like why are they being allowed to multiply pretty much entirely uncontrolled and when allowing them to do so they're transported off-site. Like wtf? Thats just asking for containment breach especially with such a high risk scp. Plus giving some away for other groups to study seems like a very un-foundation like thing to do. And once they started eating other things the population should've been culled keeping it to as small a population as possible. And the reluctance to set off the nuke even though that wasn't going to eliminate them entirely considering the basic variants still out in the wild. This universe's foundation are a bunch of dumbasses

@@Tiana_atr To be fair, the original population was not released or contained by the SCP foundation, but by that seperate group. The SCP foundation did not share the insects with other groups. They were informed about them after the fact. It's also likely that they did cull the numbers as small as possible, only keeping a few to research in order to find out what causes the mutation and how to prevent it in the wild.

Still at that University rn but had to leave that place last year thanks to covid making it useless combined with a lack of work to pay for it. It was in the pedestrian zone in Passau (Germany) and seemed to be an absolutely perfect living space. You enter the old wooden door between the entrance of 2 shops, go up the stairs and are greeted with a nice roof terrace with entrances to each of the 3 rooms. Had the smallest one, but it was a floor up which made the view nicer as I could actually look into the streets in front of the house. The entire place had been (actually was still being at the time...) renovated freshly, but we started to notice that they had been... slacking... in some areas. Combined with the fact that my 2 other roommates were there more for the party life than anything else, constantly had guests over, and most importantly: rarely got rid off their bottles etc. First were the ants but that was absolutely our fault. The shared bathroom had a window that just had you stare into other housewalls. We had a chirping little newly-hatched bird fall from the roof (wasn't high but just not reachable from our place) onto the window sill. We left the window open for it, hoping the mother would pick him up. It was hot as hell during summer and that bird invited us to the trend of just letting the bathroom window open all the time as the airflow was nice. And then the ants started to crawl in from that window as there was a small patch of grass below the window from another house. In retrospect that garden on that roof was amazing but... it didn't help. We started closing it again, vacuum'd up all the ants and we all had to leave for a month or so for an exchange. Czech Republic for some projects with people who studied german (teaching) over there like us. Silverfish, an ant colony under the scale and in the shower, the smell from a dead bird from presumably the same nest on the tiny sliver of window sil OUTSIDE the window this time and all the flies that were onto it. Some cracks in the walls had given them full access to the entire bathroom. We're lucky the ants didnt crawl under the door to expand their territory TOGETHER WITH THE ONES FROM THE TERRACE which had a resurgance for some reason. The bathroom was so humid when we came back and it turns out that was due to a water pipe leak from our neighbor which they fixed, but didnt bother to clean up. That stuff sat on the ceiling of the bathroom (or leaked into it through the cracks from before) at 29° Celsius for about a month and made any stay in that room even more miserable. Oh and there was now a hornet nest forming outside my window so yeah. We told the landlord about it all and had to leave for a while, until the damages and bugs were all gone. But we never came back as lockdown began and none of us wanted to keep paying for a place we'd only return to like 3 times a semester for the few exams that were still not digital (Germany ftw...). It was honestly fine otherwise. Location, our respective rooms, the terrace blah blah blah. But the Bathroom was our own insect hell. Thanks for coming to my terrible Ted talk.

Why didn't they just exterminate the mutated locust to the point of needing glass to contain? I know this is for a story, but the foundation knew they'd eventually be able to eat anything once they mutated to eating non organic stuff. And it's not like there was a shortage of locust to contain. A lot of these "what if" stories really underplays the foundation's future planning skills.

The locusts now have an infinite food supply. They have filled 682's container. 682, distressed by the swarm, broke containment, releasing a hoard upon the facility, requiring a detonation of the onsite nuke to prevent an NK-class end of the world event. Attempts to recapture 682 are ongoing pending nuclear cleanup.

@@benurban8875 I like it, Buuuut I have to say it is something that would have gotten the Decommissioned status. SCP-3698-D Object class: Decommissioned (Formerly Euclid.) Special Containment Procedures: Former: Because of the Nature of SCP-3698, a specialized medium humanoid containment cell fitted with monitors, speaker systems, and microphones for communication, the cell itself is to be kept in the center of a 9mx9mx9m containment chamber. No personnel are to enter this chamber under any circumstances. Interaction with SCP-3698 is to be done via remote means such as drones, radios, microphone systems, and/or notes. Current: SCP-3698-Ds remains are kept in a standard storage locker. Description: SCP-3698 is a humanoid entity, resembling a young ------ male. While normally docile and compliant with personnel, SCP-3698 is known to enter fits of intense emotional distress at random, causing its effects to increase in radius and severity. Any organism within 7 meters of SCP-3698 will begin to undergo mutations in random areas of the body, with said mutations also varying in effect. Mutations caused by SCP-3698 have almost no exact function compared to similar anomalies [Footnote: such as SCP-016] or noticeable consistent mutations. [Footnote: such as SCP-407] Addendum: 3698-T Mutation log Effects during limited testing have resulted in the following: *Ankles sprouting fungi *Intense bleeding from open wounds *The ability to perceive movement faster than should be possible [Footnote: Mutated subject D-1842 was epileptic and suffered severe seizures after exposure] *The ability to consume inanimate material such as wood and metal. *[DATA EXPUNGED] [Footnote: The fetus within D-6545 was found to not be affected by this mutation, although it was confirmed deceased] Addendum: 3698-D Decommissioning On the [REDACTED], D-6545 was exposed to SCP-3698 during an intense emotional state, resulting in a massive containment breach. SCP-3698 attempted to escape during the event, but was terminated via a stray shot from several security officers who underwent mutation causing their bodies to grow additional fingers that were nonresponsive. SCP-3698s remains were then transported following the securement of the site and the containment breach disarmed. Due to the lack of noticeable effects coming from the corpse, SCP-3698 is now classified as SCP-6698-D, and is to be labeled as Decommissioned. Note: SCP-3698-Ds cell is now being used as a temporary holding cell for various low danger anomalies.

Those on the wiki would just spam “there is no canon” over and over until you blindly agree, but I’d argue it’s more for the sake of the story, meta-wise.
