Mine Exploration and Hiking With Tom and Julie
After a Jeep ride across Death Valley we head up Warm Spring Canyon looking for abandoned mines. We find some large talc mines where we explore the underground workings. We took a quick look at the old Grantham mining camp then headed over to the Gold Hill Mill. At the mill we find a diesel engine, jaw crusher, arrastra, ball mill, ore bin and other pieces of equipment. From there we hike up the mountain where we had spotted a couple waste rock piles and some aerial tram towers. We find three drifts that we explore to finish off our day. We hope you enjoy the video.
Here are a couple links to other videos you might be interested in:

Tom and Julie. This small mill speaks volumes to the beginnings of the industrial revolution that took place before electricity became widely used in factories around the world. The idea one could run an entire factory in this manner seems unthinkable but it was done. From water wheels to internal or external combustion engines, it was done. Such an important part of manufacturing history that is almost forgotten with very few living examples. I can't thank you guys enough for giving us a look at this mill!

If that was a talc mine, I saw Julie with a dust mask on, which is a very good idea, I hope you were wearing one too. I worked at a pulp and paper mill that used talc in their paper making process. It used to come to the mill in large hopper type tanker cars by train, before being able to unload, water had to be added, and an airline to agitate it. The guy who used to unload these cars never wore breathing protection, it eventually began plugging up his lungs. He survived, but it was an awful time for him.
@TomandJulieMineExploring

There were three different talc mines shown in this video. Julie wears a mask more often than I do. Exploring these mines is not the same exposure that one would get when you're working in a dusty environment every day. Still, I should wear a mask and will probably die a slow death because I didn't. Thanks for watching! 👍

@@TomandJulieMineExploring Talc is very fine, and it doesn't take much to get lodged into the lungs. The guy I worked with wasn't in it everyday, only when the talcum tank would get down to a certain level then they brought a car in. This operation was new, and he worked with it for around three years, got sick, and shortly after he retired. You both are very fortunate to live near very interesting places, and I like the way you explain things. Your welcome, have fun and the both of you just play safe.

That is not a diesel engine. It is a 32 or 40 HP throttle governed Fairbanks Morse gas engine. Thanks for all the cool places you and Julie visit.
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input on the engine. You are the first to comment about it and I was hoping more people would do so. I really don't think it's as high of HP as you are thinking. I will post a link to a video we made of a 15HP Fairbanks - Morse gas engine and it is considerably larger physically than this one. I was going by two different sources familiar with the engine who both say it's an oil burning engine and neither stated the HP. One of them call it a "hot shot engine" and the other source calls it a "diesel engine". Here is the link to the video of the 15HP. Thanks again for your comment!👍 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edqniL2L17a8knU.html

Fluorita (fluorite) with oxide of lead is my guess at the purplish / yellowish vein at 23:00 And NPS historic inventory of mining operations in Death Valley mentions the fluorite mines in Warm Spring Canyon area. And many other Talc mines in that canyon.

Hi Tom & Julie, that old gas pump brings back memories, remember hearing the tick tick as the price gauge went round ?? I think that was disgusting of Grantham to basically steal his land. The camp was in pretty good shape, I bet it wouldn't take too much to get her up and running again. That old mill was such an awesome find, it had everything you need pretty much, apart from some shaker tables it was complete and it looked more or less untouched too. The purple mineral was so pretty, it just seemed to pop up everywhere. Thank you for sharing, sending love and hugs to you both. xx 💞

Hi Sue, I guess old Louise was a ruthless operator over that land deal. I do remember hearing those reels going around on the gas pumps. The mill is really cool and fun to see that it's surprisingly intact. The purple mineral might be fluorite, but I'm no geologist. Thanks for the nice comment! 😻😭💖👌👌👍

That was awesome y'all. I loved that old mill, it really showed the history of the mill. They almost always started with the arrastra. Usually powered by one of those critters you said hi to. I noticed how it choose to ignore you. Yep, it was thinking great grandpa told me to watch out for this kind of animal, especially when there's one of those stone circles around🙂Then it moved to the powered arrastra and from there to a full blown mill. Probably about 3-5 years in the making. Although sometimes they'd get lucky and get an investor. Looked like all the liners had been pulled out of the ball mill. Would have been a treat to see what was behind them. Great explore in the mine too. Don't know what that purple was but was interesting. Well i've rambled enough. Y'all have a safe one and see you next time. Told you; i don't care what you call yourselves.....i'd find you.

The filling stations, as they used to be called, filled your gas, oil and air. Now they are just gas stations, and you get to pump your own gas, except here in Oregon. The Purple People Eaters were the MN Vikings in the late 60's. Thanks for the comment, Tony! 👍 👍

I soaked at the source of the warm springs in about 1995 or so. The pool had warm water in it, fed from the springs, at that time. The mine was blocked off with steal bars so I did not try to explore it. Not a whole lot of tailing so I did not think the mine was not too much. Supersized to see how much was removed by your video.

Pretty cool stuff! I've explored that canyon several times over the years. I even hiked up to the headwaters of the warm spring and took a dip! The water isn't all that warm, though. And I've seen to pool completely empty and clean, and other times with stagnant green water. Once, it was completely full! Someone had diverted the creek back so it flowed into the pool. Farther up canyon, off to the right (and up), by another spring are are petroglyphs.

This was an awesome adventure. Mines, scenery, a large camp, and an incredible mill. With an assembled arastra! What a deal👍🏻😎 I was thinking about that Grantham land grab. I don't like what she did. I Googled to find more about her and gave up. I did find a Gutenberg Project book by William Caruthers: Loafing Along Death Valley Trails. I've started it and it's great 👍🏻 Have you heard about this 1950 book?

Funny, I didn't even notice the tram or the mines on the hill when I visited last fall. I think the purple mineral could be fluorite, but I cant be sure. What do I know? Im just a stupid carpenter! What a fascinating trip report! Those miners at the Grantham mine camp were living in relative luxury! Were the Grantham mine camp and the Gold Hill Mine and Mill in the same vicinity? Were the miners extracting talc and gold from roughly the same geologic location?

Glad that you enjoyed the trip, RG. Yes, the camp and mill are right next to each other, maybe 1/5 of a mile apart. This is a very popular 4x4 Death Valley route through Warm Spring Canyon. There is talc very close to the camp and the gold mainly came from Gold Hill, which is west and a little north. Thanks for the comment!😎

Those are not called bacon strips, they're actually called Mats ! Normally they're pinned up there with split set rock bolts or rebar and resin bolts and plates if they have a nut on the rebar then it's a resin bolt 6-8 or 10 feet long. That bag that you found is actually a 50 pound bag of ammonia nitrate prell explosive judging from the" head Picture" I would say it's from the Trojan powder company as that Trojan head is there a trademark symbol. Not quite sure what the booster would be never seen anfo like that in all the years I've been mining underground professionally if I had to guess I'd say it's either a marketing gimmick or letting you know that it's already premixed ,may be a little hotter mix ? There are two common ways to bend rail in a mine the first would be using either a hydraulic or manual screw fed Jim crow Device or more commonly we would just use the 12b or other brand rail mucker.
@TomandJulieMineExploring

Very cool video I love the gas pump, and the pool, it look like a really cool place at one time. And it's really cool to see all the machinery used to crush The Rock. And you're always using words like something bucket and muck sheets. Where do you get this terminology from? And then you showed us a tram What was the tram used for? And what is a tram? Like a cable with buckets carrying orr ? And then you showed us something on the ceiling and you said is that a tag, what's a tag? And then you showed us that purple rock and said it's a replacement deposit in limestone? All metallic and nature. I have a lot of questions I should change my name to question boy. This was a real interesting video keep them coming and keep safe out there my brother and sister. Question boy out!!
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
Hey Eddie, glad that you liked the video and the camp. A lot of the terminology is specific to mining so you may not have heard some of those used before. A tram is used to more ore around. Usually from a higher up location where hauling it down a mountain road is very diffiult. They can be either a ground tram or like at this mine an aerial tram. There are towers that hold up a cable where a buckets are attached and loaded with ore. Many times they are very simple where gravity will bring the loaded bucket down while also pulling the empty bucket back up. They just go back and forth like that with big pulleys on either end. The tags are markers that the mine surveyors and assessors mark things like ore sample locations so they can keep track of what sample came from what location. As far as the purple minerals go I was kind of BS'ing and trying to sound like a geologist, which I am definitely not. Thanks for the questions I hope I answered them all. 🙂 👍👌

www.truckeehistory.org/sierra-nevada-wood-and-lumber-company.html Here is a link to an example of a Sierra Nevada mill that cut timbers for mine and railroad use. After milling, the timbers would be hauled to the mines on trucks, and before that wagons and horses or mules. I'm not a geologist, but purple colored minerals are sometimes associated with fluorite. The mines may or may not be played out. Each one has a different story and work started and stopped for numerous reasons. Thanks for the comment, Mike!👍

That's a good question. I'm guessing that the old time miners were pretty sharp and knew what they were doing. One method used is to follow the 'float'. They would take samples from a drainage and pan them out. If the pan looked promising, they would continue the process while moving uphill until they found the source of the float. The water is used with the drills for cooling the bit, clearing the bore hole, and for dust mitigation.
