So it sounds like the production of Waterworld can be summed up in one quote: "Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up."

To be fair. . . he had just catapulted to stardom with Prince of Thieves. It would be hard not to let your ego inflate a bit after that. Once it really became clear his ego was making him all but impossible to work with, and as a result pretty much tanking the films he was in, he lost the star power that let him be such a pain in the ass in the first place. It seems he's since reigned in the ego and recommitted himself to just doing his part to make the best film possible. Mr. Brooks is a great little 2007 film where he plays a serial killer, and it's great to see the kind of performance he can turn in when he's not preoccupied with being "The Star."

Johnny Fiction, If I remember correctly, Waterworld and The Postman are probably The Only Kevin Costner movies that ever got a bad wrap, from critics or film viewers, both were post apocalyptic films, but everything else He has ever done from Westerns to Sports Oriented films, to Dramas were for the most part Always Praised or Well received, so as long as he stayed away from dystopian end time films , he was good, even though both movies seems to do pretty well in the home viewing market.

I love this movie and watch it whenever it's on, but it didn't turn a profit. it cost 200 million and made 264 million. After merch and home video etc. it maybe broke even.

+SirGeeeO even the studio admitted it turned a profit. A small one yes, but it didn't lose money. Half the box office is bunk. Different studios leverage different deals with theater chains. There have been some that went up to 90% profits going to the studio.

+SirGeeeO I used to work at a theater for a few years and I can assure the theater doesn't get half the money. The theater gets between maybe 1 and 5 percent, I don't remember, but it's VERY low. Great review as always. Its lucky in some regards that it came out before the internet during its making. If there`s a hint of something going wrong on a movie, people on the internet will make it 10x worse.

I absolutely LOVE this movie and I have both the original theatrical release and the full extended version (not the watered-down version they showed on TV). Waterworld is among the many favorites of mine :)

$3000 in todays money, $0.5 million for the duration of filming. And thats without $14m pay and a yacht. For a movie that should have cost $30m. Not to shabby.

I don't care what people say, I've always loved the "Waterworld". It's one of my favorite movies of all-time. I've seen it like 20 or maybe even 30 times and still every time I watch it's so great.

Now that was interesting. Waterworld is one of these movies that are just ... entertaining to watch. A rather unique (visually) premise, a great villain, fun action. I can watch that movie anyday without getting bored - that's more than many other movies accomplish.. But I never knew about the directors cut. Though I'd be more interested to learn how the smokers got their cigarettes (how they grow all the tobacco? Or is it a substitute?). And Dryland is Mt. Evererst? Makes sense, never thought about it before... All in all - its way better than Costner's other post-apoclypse-movie, the dreadfully dragging Postman...^^

Great review! I pickend up the craft because of your review on blu Ray but i didn't see it yet ... But will do soon. Since you did not - i would like to mention that james Newton Howard's score for this is pretty damn good! Please do The Specialist from 1994. Another One of those underrated Movies with great Music... That would be awesome! Cheers!

I remember working at a movie theater when this came out. It was one of those movies to have a late night screening and riff on it. I gotta see the directors cut

I finally watched this film last week in quarantine. I never watched it before bc I always heard it was a terrible movie but now that I have all of this extra time I been watching movies I skipped in the past. I remember the hype of it being the most expensive movie ever made I was 9 yrs old and I remember kids talking about in class. Toy Story came out the same year and everyone at school forgot about Waterworld. I kinda forgot about too and would see it on cable tv and always turn the channel. I'm glad I finally watched it bc its not as bad as I thought it would be. It was entertaining and had practical effects and underwater stunts I never seen before. I guess I'm burnt out on CGI so its cool to see older movies with real stuff and not CGI. I bought it so now I can watch it whenever now.

Yea I remember a 6 screen theatre in St. Louis when I was a wee lad in 1986. I was blown away. We had a single screen cinema in out lil town. Now. A 4 screen cinema is a low key place compared to a 12 screen cinema plex

Also, thanks for the little history lesson on how multiplexes & Hollywood's obsession with gigantic budget, lavish productions got started. Man, do I wish I could've experienced going to theaters that only showed a double bill! Instead I had to grow up during the multiplex era, & I would have loved to experience going to drive-in theaters, as well.

Sounds like a good idea, I'll definitely watch it. I despise Hollywood, & want to work independently, myself. I got some really great original ideas that go against the grain of what types of films turn profits in Hollywood, nowadays.

I will never understand how Costner got hired for... like anything. Dude regularly gets out acted by wall paper. Hopper really helps save the movie fortunately. Great review
