Woman Living Fully Off-Grid for 2 Years in a Tiny Yurt

Beige has been living fully off-grid in Canada in her small yurt for over 2 years. She has no electricity, she uses a wood stove for heat, and to cook. Her tiny home can't be accessed by car so she hauls in all of her spring water, wood, and food on foot.
We spent a couple of days getting to know Beige and we were inspired by her dedication to live a lifestyle that is in line with her values. She works hard every single day to get her food, water, and wood, in addition to helping out on the farm where her yurt is set up, and working as a nature mentor with local children.
She's also incredibly curious and fearless when it comes to trying new things and developing new skills that will help her in her off-grid lifestyle. She grows a lot of her own vegetables, and she's learning about plant medicine - she plants, harvests, and mixes a lot of her own tinctures.
For refrigeration, she has a cooler that sits below the floor so that it touches the ground and stays cool. Her toilet is a hole in the ground outside with a pallet over top of it. She showers at yoga studios in the winter, and she swims in the spring/summer/fall.
For light, she uses candles, and she charges her phone in her car on her way to and from work.
She has her yurt set up on a friend's farm, tucked away in a wooded area that gives her privacy, although a neighbour has complained so she is in the process of deciding if she will get a permit or move the yurt elsewhere.
While living off-grid in her yurt has been an incredible experience for Beige, she also acknowledges that it's a very difficult lifestyle that could be made easier if she could live among other people who are off-grid as well so they could help each other out.
Beige bought her yurt from Groovy Yurts and you can check them out here: groovyyurts.com/

So she's not bothering anyone, living without being a strain on utilities and resources, and someone complains. That is a person who's jealous or just a nosey busybody. It's unbelievable how others cannot leave people alone and let them be happy.

Shawn Vega Velez - Exactly! Some people just live to tell others what they perceive them to be doing wrong. Sigh. If it is found that she does nothing that hurts the land or other people, she should be granted an automatic permit to stay without a problem. There’s a lot of stories about tragic things happening in places you wouldn’t normally find a dwelling. I can’t fault people for wondering what is going on.

Social media is a menace to society! It's very detrimental to humans socializing - in person socializing, not hiding behind a phone screen or computer. People used to be outside after work or on the weekends because they didn't have video games or the internet. People knew their neighbors and actually talked to one another now they don't even look at you. People are so attached to their phones that you can't even dodge a call and say you were in the shower or something, nope tabs can be kept on your every move! I don't do cell phones myself

So, let me see if I understand. She has permission to live there. Helps the owners of the land in return (barter system), takes from the land only what she needs... PLUS actively maintains and manages the land. Has a job (not living off the system) teaching children. Essentially a minimalist to the extreme with practically no negative impact on Mother earth nor society and yet... yet someone that probably has no reason what-so-ever to care about her is creating an issue for her. Tattling to the bureaucrats because.. you know... reasons... WTH is wrong with people.

Jae Nan - as a non-Mongolian I fell in love with yurts many years and stayed with an off grid community making yurts and erecting them at festivals. I made my own 'pop up' ger from bamboo and lived in it for two years in my back garden. This exercise ought to be part of every school curriculum. I gained so much from this experience including the realisation that there are not enough Mongolians in my life.😊

Hot tip for hauling things to your homestead. I found 2 blue, plastic kiddie pools on the side of the road. I drilled a hole in the top of the rim of each pool then used leftover ropes to make handles. I load them up with whatever I'm hauling and pull them along behind me. I use them to haul firewood out of the woods and now to haul my kerosene can and fill set-up from the garage to the porch. I'm 60 years old now so carrying such heavy things isn't a very good option. The pools slide over everything...mud, snow, rocks...doesn't matter, they glide very smoothly over the landscape. The best part is they require no maintenance. I've been doing this for years. Might help you too. Happy homesteading!! Such a lovely home you've created for yourself and your beautiful dog!!!! 😊

Who the hell would have a problem living near her? I've had some awful neighbors, barking dogs, people arguing loudly at 3 in the morning and so on.
