Amanda lives alone in an off-grid cabin on a remote island in British Columbia. She previously lived on a sailboat in Vancouver for 8 years and then headed North with her boat. She eventually wanted to move onto land because her dog Buttercup was getting older and after searching online, she connected with the owners of an island who were looking for a caretaker to keep an eye on things.
So for the past two years, Amanda has lived solo on the island (aside from a couple of months in the summer when the owners and cabin guests are visiting) and she has taken care of everything from splitting and stacking firewood, maintaining the lawn, running the generators, and a lot more! It's a big job and she does most of her caretaker tasks in the morning and in the afternoons she works remotely as a web designer. She also has a great KZfaq channel that she uses to document her liveaboard and off-grid lifestyles.
You can follow and find out more about Amanda's off-grid island life here:

@computerjantje oh heavens no, I love my life in the subtropics surrounded by family, friends, beaches and rainforest. If there's one thing I've learnt as I've got older it's that just because something is beautiful/exciting etc doesn't mean I need to own it or do it. I can admire and appreciate and then move on.

What a great video. Nice to see our neighbor here. My husband and I live close by on our sailboat and it's been such a pleasure getting to know Amanda. Having lived off grid for many years, I would tend to disagree. The data would show that a lack of regular health care, including dentistry will shorten ones life expectancy. Oftentimes a minor health issue will be 'toughed out' rather than addressed, which can lead to an exacerbated decline in overall health. This lifestyle appears (to the uninitiated) to be filled with endless days of serenity and solitude...whereas in reality, it's labour intensive, lonely, and extremely dangerous...and just staying warm is a full time occupatipn. I'd give most humans a month before they're desperate for takeout and a Starbucks😂

I just looked thru a few comments. Some of the first ones I will respond to. Like one person said you’re not off grid if you use a cell phone, another said you’re not off grid if you’re on KZfaq. I guess more people should do some research on what off grid is. You live in the middle of nowhere and you supply your own power like wind or solar. You have no public utilities like water, gas, sewer or electric. There are many people that have KZfaq channels that live off grid. Like when I camped in the Desert for 12 months in the middle of nowhere. Sure I had my cell phone I used wind and solar for power. I truly love that lifestyle. You are living my dream Amanda.
@AmandaOffGrid
@AmandaOffGrid 17 күн бұрын
Yaaaaas! Just because you've got internet and cell service (which, by the way, I don't have), it doesn't disqualify you from living off-grid. Some purists might argue that true off-grid living means cutting ties with all things digital, but let's be real here: in today's world, staying connected is more of a necessity than a luxury. When you're out in the middle of nowhere and you need help, having a lifeline to the outside world can save your life.
@YeshuaKingMessiah

OffGrid means like if the Grid went down Which means cell phns are down too, yup If u wanna make a vid on phn charged with solar panel and then d/l it in town once a week on library internet, sure. I’ve lived very recently with no phn service at all. For 1 1/2yrs. With kids. It was most amazing time in our life. Ppl learned to leave vmails cuz it wouldn’t even register my missed calls. I went to town once a week lol You Just Need Each Other and Friends Who Want To Stop By Aloneness, I’m not so sure of. Humans are social creatures.

Some people just enjoy solitude. My wife died a year ago. My life of teaching in one-teacher schools and in the sticks were hard on her but not me. I grew up on an island. Lately friends thing I should be looking for a companion, but I'm happy the way I am and I don't think many women would like to live my back-to-the land lifestyle. I live 5 driving hours from the nearest interstate and 2 driving hours to the nearest Costco. But having traveled many times up the coast and seen so many of the BC coastal islands and the waterfalls and the animals and the orcas, I wished I could have spent time on the BC Coast. But I lived on the American San Juans which are an extension of the Canadian San Juans. We high school kids couldn't wait to get off the "rock", but now I am so glad I had that life and understand so well Amanda's life. Thanks, Amanda.

I live my life doing what makes me happy, that is the secret, do what makes you happy no matter what any one thinks because its your life to live as you see fit. I think to many people live their lives to please others. I don't believe in controlling, there is no way I would allow another person to control me. She kayaks out into the water to get most of her firewood from downed trees floating by. Pounds a staple into the tree and "kayaks it" back to short, drags it up the bank, chainsaws it, splits it, and then delivers it to the various structures. That alone is a solid workout on a regular basis.

WOW, you're living my dream life Amanda!!! To anyone out there looking for a caretaker, I'm a 56 year old vet who's cut down hundreds of trees. Am in The Florida Native Plant Society and give foraging walks. Had rental property. Spent all my teenage years in Alaska, 3 in a log cabin. Can fix anything (was a jet mech in the navy)etc etc. My wife and I will plant you a food forest and manage it for you, just let us plop a tiny house in a remote corner of the property!

What a useful human life. Love it. To be alone with a purpose in a beautiful natural place. Wow Even the danger is invigorating bc it makes you more aware of every moment..cannot rush, must notice it all.. I hope you find another dog or one finds you. Unconditionally sharing life and love with a dog will keep your heart strong. x

With how the world is today, living this way is considered weird for most. How materialistic and extroverted the world is, is the reason behind it. People can’t keep still. For me, this is the life. Working the land and enjoying peace and quiet is an absolute privilege and a necessity in my opinion. Truly challenges you. The mental therapy is mandatory. Love this. Much respect and admiration for this woman.🙏🏼❤️🤙🏼✊🏼

I once asked a therapist if it was strange that I'm always alone but never lonely. He said he thinks it's definite personality type and the people who go against their nature to force themselves into social lives are those who suffer severe depression. Some of us, for whatever reason, are meant to be alone. Congratulations to this woman for having found her place.

Beautifully said. I've never been one to go against my nature. It's disheartening to witness so many people steer away from their authentic selves, chasing after societal expectations and norms. They often find themselves navigating through lives that feel hollow and unfulfilled. It would be so liberating if society embraced our human differences with open arms, rather than scrutinizing and condemning them. We'd all be much happier for it.
