Minimalist Couple Living in a Tiny Camper Trailer That Cost Only $1,800 - RV Life

Exploring Alternatives

7 жыл бұрын

Kathleen and Greg from Tiny House, Tiny Footprint (www.tinyhousetinyfootprint.com) decided to downsize their lives from a downtown apartment in Denver, Colorado to a 140 square foot camper trailer / mobile home. For the first year of their tiny house experiment, the 1969 camper trailer was parked in a friend’s backyard until they bought a piece of land where they could park the trailer and grow their own food.
The couple’s inspiration to adopt a minimalist lifestyle and move into a small space was multifaceted: they wanted to have a smaller environmental footprint, spend less money, have more time for outdoor adventures, and be location independent. While their trailer is parked in one spot most of the time, they do have the ability to move it if they want to. Their cost of living is also low enough that they can afford to freelance, giving them even more flexibility.
In addition to their trailer, Kathleen and Greg are also converting a 1987 Toyota van into a camper van for budget-friendly road tripping which will allow them to experience working on the road as digital nomads.
They are passionate about their own simple living lifestyle, and about sharing the alternative lifestyle experiments of fellow tiny home dwellers on their blog and (gorgeous) Instagram account.
You can (and should!) follow Kathleen and Greg on their blog, Facebook, and Instagram:

It's a bit strange that living small is considered "alternative". Throughout time humans have always lived a simple life. It's actually big houses and stressful jobs that is the experimental form of living.

That’s exactly what I was thinking! Throughout history humans have lived pretty rough, this trailer living would be considered a luxury. We have really switched our lifestyle to busy lives so we can buy useless stuff

Christina Reynolds but you can also look at from the point that modernization has developed an enormous amount of things that we never had before that probably take more lives than save them. I agree with your point that things have been created to save many, many lives but would all of it have been necessary if we didn’t create even more things that took many more lives?

So you are saying your a free loader living from the profits of other hard working people. Abusing the the kindness of the church who receives it money from hard working people. And your friend who pays real money for his/ her land in which they must have to work hard for. Don’t say you step out in faith. That’s would be a disgrace to yourself and the book. You were lucky they let you stay 5 yrs. instead of helping yourself you probably overstayed your welcome and they made you leave. There is a difference between free loading and charity.

Then I was asked to live for free, and be security on an RV sales lot.5 years there . Great gig. Now I'm on a friends nice yard. PTL.. I know great places to hang in the Forrest in Flagstaff too. Very beautiful

imagine being fully employed, living this way for 10-20+ years, you'd have an absolute fortune saved up.
@Alphacentauri819

Anony mous but isn’t that against what a lot of these people are about? A lot of them don’t care about the fortune, but about the living and adventure, simplicity and freedom...those don’t exist with many oh the regular full employment. They’re often trying to get out of that rat race, or avoid it all together...a fortune is a different meaning to them. A fortune is this life and enough to get by, maybe a little more...many don’t value the $$fortune the way a lot of others do.

There are inexpensive camping showers that can be purchased from outdoors stores. You fill them with water, hang them up, stand underneath and shower away. You can warm the water before pouring into the shower container. You could hang them in a shower that is not hooked to water or get an inexpensive outdoor loo-tent and hang it in there for your showers.

You can build a simple 2x4 platform and have a 20 gallon tank with a small showerhead and put curtain around it and a shallow round bucket to step into with a quick dry mat in it and outside it, dump the soap water outside on the dirt and shower under the sun. Viola shower.

There are portable showers you can buy. But they said the shower a gym. My wife and I recently took our camper out to a state park and didn't have hot water, except what we heated on the stove. Most of the sites had the water shut off for the off season and the shower houses were closed. Bring baby wipes and dry shampoo🤷

Im not understanding the replies where they're talking about washing in a bucket, or with cups of water. Theyre in a permanent spot, just in a small RV. They can afford to put a water tank next to the trailer, solar heater up top, solar panels, and have all the hot running water they want.

I plan on doing the same thing in the very near future. My main worry is the govt. making it illegal to escape the matrix. It makes me sad that the only thing I fear is the govt. of the country I love. I quit a high paying management position to work in a warehouse. Sold my house and live in an efficiency. People don't get it. Much happier wearing a real smile rather than the fake one at my old suit and tie job.

An elevated water barrel with a square frame and a tarp pointed in to the top of the barrel from above (small hole) and you will catch rain water and morning due, put a fine charcoal filter on the barrel and hook it up to the water inlet, if you elevate it above the window you wont even need a pump, gravity will take care of it for you, you can use that water for washing/showering and if you add a UV filter in to the mix, drinking too. I lived in a caravan/camper trailer for a month, it is surprising how fast you adapt and realize how little space you actually need, good video!

Another really inspiring alternative housing video! Something that really strikes me about this one is how conducive it is to spending a lot of time outdoors. It's like more of a camping feeling than a typical "I live in a house" feeling. It takes up so much less space (and money) than a house would so that means more room on the property for just open-air building-free nature - and growing food, and animals to roam. Or bonfires or whatever folks wanna do outside. Also forces them to be more minimalist with their belongings which is a great thing cause loved ones and activities and experiences are more meaningful than a bunch of high-maintenance belongings. That's cool they sometimes don't bother with showering at home and use the gym for that instead though would need to weigh out the cost-savings of that. I can't really imagine a family with kids enjoying this, but for one low-maintenance single or happy couple who values cost-saving, nature, minimalism, travel - sounds awesome. Curious to hear more about cost + options for finding legal places in the US to park it other than RV parks and certain farms.

All couples should do this for 6 months before they get married. It doesn't matter if they like this type of living or not. They will either get to know each other intimately (if they are meant to be),or hate each other and part ways.

SW Sweetie Statistics are often useless if all the variables aren't considered. There are many factors at play, but the obvious one is that people who decide to live with a partner may also be more likely to divorce if they are unhappy with the relationship after taking vows, since they may have less conservative views of marriage. The most conservative are going to be influenced by their strong religious values, which many even prohibit living together,so they have no choice anyhow. These same people will be equally compelled to hang onto their marriage (due to religious taboos of divorce) even if they are absolutely miserable. I'm sure the results would be different if it was changed to "happily married". Regardless of that,my example was MUCH different than living in a spacious home where one could retreat to a different room to cool down after any argument,or even have their own space at will. Only true love can keep 2 people together when they are cooped up in such a small space. You can't get away from anything you may not like. You have to accept your partner as they are,or it is not going to last long. It really is the perfect test.Mind you if everyone did that, the marriage rate would only be about 20% XD.

A HUGE HUGE advantage to living in a travel trailer like this is that you do not need a building permit. You can skip a lot of bureaucratic red tape. You also do not have to pay ten thousand bucks plus for a septic system. (Just have a composting toilet and be very clean with your gray water) So if you buy land in an area that does not have zoning restrictions against living in an RV, the building permit people cannot say anything about living in an RV (or any other type of vehicle) because it does not require a building permit, it is outside of their control, they cannot say you do not have an occupancy permit. Taxes are paid for a vehicle not a building.

We have been downsizing for years and now we are gonna be buying our RV this summer and when it’s the way we want it then she can locate a job in an area where we want to travel too and take off and don’t look back. Have you two run into hospitals cutting back on the travelers anywhere and what areas are still strongly using them from what you’ve experienced? I’m proud of you both and maybe one day soon our paths will cross somewhere. Take care and be safe out there!

I've been watching similar videos like this off and on for years on youtube. So I'm surprised at the negative comments. I suppose it's a knee jerk reaction from people who've been so conditioned to think owning some over sized and over priced home in suburbs is actually a smart goal to achieve, I did too until I realized how foolish it is to define yourself by your crown molding and granite countertops, and so afraid that if you do ONE thing your boss doesn't approve of that if you lose your job then your house of cards falls. Me personally, I'd rather have a roof over my head that's paid for so my money can go to more meaningful things rather than the latest BMW I can lease that will be considered old in a year lol....

pennypay1 what about if they are happy and content with their decisions tho just as you are? Do you really think their guests are upset about where they had to sleep? I don’t think so, they probly knew what they were getting into before they arrived and are probly of similair mindset to them? How many of your guests do you think aren’t satisfied staying in your guest room? Do you think any of them would have rather Ed staying at the 5 star Sheraton downtown?

I envy this lifestyle . City life sucks in so many ways . Take bad neighbors for instance . A lot of people today are just out & out bad . They don't sleep at night and they make a lot of noise and become offended and combative when asked to keep the noise down & allow other people to sleep . Neighbors often play loud music that you don't like . Compare that with the milieu of the nature sounds of Chickens & crickets & birdsongs along with the smell of soil and compost creates a healing , tranquilizing salve that the city sadly lacks .

Wow, there are so many negative comments on here for no good reason. If you hate this lifestyle or people that live it...why are you watching the video adding to the views? Lol. It's quite silly. I'm so confused as to why anyone would even care how someone else lived as long as they weren't harming anyone or anything. If you rather clock in for 30-40-50 years of your life, taking a one week vacation every year, being miserable, by all means, do that. No one is hassling you for doing that. If someone finds a way of life that makes them happy and doesn't affect your way of life, I don't get why it would bother you so much. The only thing I can think of it jealously. Maybe you're not jealous of the lower income, or small space. But maybe you're jealous because you have zero freedom. Maybe you're jealous of the fact you have to wake up at 5am to get your kids ready for school. Maybe you're pissed because you've only seen 4 or 5 states in your life. Maybe you're envious because you don't possess the courage it takes to venture out and change your lifestyle. Maybe you're trapped in the lifestyle you have because you have student loans, a car note or two, and a mortgage and a house full of materialistic things that don't actually improve your life. Maybe you wake up every morning and say "Fuck this.". Is this way too long for a youtube comment? Absolutely. But some of you are bitter as hell and it's not a good look.

Land is crazy cheap if you're willing to live off grid. About 2k to 5k per ACRE. :O Yeah, and usually owner financed with less than $500 down. The significant costs are: solar system (1k), septic system (5k which may be required by ordinance), drilling and creating a well (6k to 20k) but the nice thing is you can usually take your time and it must be so freeing to own your space like that. Even in small towns, you don't quite have the same experience of being totally independent and off grid. The defining factor in a lot of these videos is a sweet and kind partner to share the lifestyle with. Most wouldn't make it (or want to) solo.

your comment is one of the self taught "opinions" I learned years ago. Isnt it thought provoking to the masses? U fortunately not. Why? Do the ratings math. We're on an obscure comment site vs. mainstream media TV show commercials which have historically been successful at bending so called "adults" minds to chose "popular" products. The fact is, these products parent companies enjoy tens of millions of dollars of profit by using compli ated psychology to induce the public (adults?) to waste valuable cash. Image is everything....that's another old saying, but the devil is in the details as to why so many old sayings keep being proven over and over again....ooops!!!!!!..I never have seen a 10 o'clock "news" segment covering this obvious reality yet....no, im not surprised.....and FYI, my past accomplishments cost me huge dollars, and I knew it day after week after month...for over 20 years. No way I can cover all the reasons in text. old saying..walk in someone's shoes....this is part of the reason for my success, whi h is polar opposite to big business marketing strategies.

Thanks for posting your video. We just purchased a 1991 Terry camper and good some good ideas from your video and have it at a fixed location in Colorado, but don't live there continuously. We do similar with the vegetables, but hadn't thought of a vertical rack. We were surprised that we love our 5 gallon bucket compostable toilet buckets with seats - not as fancy as yours, but only needs biodegradable liner, peat moss, wood chips and some paper filling that absorbs moisture.
