In this series I meet up with Elaina and go on a roadtrip in Hungary to visit abandoned places like bunkers. In this episode I try an abandoned power station where I failed 10 years ago and was almost bitten by an aggressive security dog. This time we succeed. Watch how we explore this amazing power station.

I'm a Canadian mechanical power engineer, and the lab you were in is used for doing boiler feed water testing. That lab you were in was not for creating things. Also the little room out on the floor by the turbo generators is a quiet room. The operating floor would have been very noisy with the turbo generators running.

i've woorked in an powerstation that was desinged in the late '70 and started production in the beginning of the '80s, the square gauges also where used in the control rooms because of the pannels. inside the panels there are square pieces that can be pushed out. so the square gauges are very old

I have worked in a Petrochemical Plant / Lab since 1979, it was built in 1966. Half the associated plants are now shutdown and even in the existing labs there are many items like this stashed away in stores or cupboards. Not much of that glassware is used anymore, there are more automated ways of doing the testing.

This generator has a DC exciter. That's pretty late in 1968, most have switched to rectifiers by that point. At the 30 minute mark they show a 3000RPM/1000RPM gear reducer to spin the exciter. I've never seen that before either, that's cool and unique.

Wonder if the plant needed to be reactivated how many billions it would cost? Having worked in manufacturing plants with in house power generation looking at those lockers , fire safety stations and such I can just imagine the old guys who must have been there for 15 or 20 years running things, the smells and noises of the machinery come to mind as well. As well as the grease and dust! The language on the signage maybe different from my own but anyone who has worked in such a place can relate. Long hours fueled by luke warm coffee on the night shift next to asbestos covered steam lines during my early working life flood back watching this. Decades of history for those who worked here in this plant no doubt. Amazing work guys!

What an amazing place! And I cannot believe the size of the chemistry department. I guess all of that was purely to monitor and adjust the chemistry of the water used in the plant. I never really stopped to think about how important that must be for a steam turbine system. If the chemistry make up of the water is not spot on just imagine the damage that could be done to the entire system with various build ups. So surprising to see it so well kept so long after the plant was closed.
@antoniojuric8185
@antoniojuric8185 Жыл бұрын
That's right, water is very important in steam plants. Water samples are taken once a day and analyzed. The water is treated with various chemicals because in the case of "unclean" water, the consequences on the steam turbine are enormous.
@holysirsalad
@holysirsalad Жыл бұрын
Water quality is critical but that doesn't necessarily require an entire complex. That job is usually accomplished by a much smaller lab. This plant, Banhida, originally used low grade coal from a nearby mine. It had a pretty good run - construction began in 1929 and it opened in 1935, closing in 2004. Looks like the last major overhaul was in the 1960s, so that equipment must have quite a few hours on it! I suspect they were performing tests on much more than the primary water. At 34:10 they come across some jars with dry samples in them. At least one of them appears to contain ash. Others look like flakes of creosote, some just look like lignite coal. Since this plant was upgraded a number of much more modern and clean gas and oil plants were built in and around Budapest. I don't know what this plant might have been fitted with but Hungary's largest coal power plant, Mátra, was equipped with flue gas desulphurization in 2000. Lignite coal is one of the worst for sulphur content and sulphuric acid not only is an pollutant around the area but quickly corrodes the internals of the boiler and flue gas system. I'm guessing that the lab was monitoring conditions of various parts of the plant as it aged, analyzing the chemistry within the boiler and stack, as well as the fuel itself.

@@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath I enjoy your productions, but since I work as a consultant in the US power industry, please take this caution. In spite of the antics you've seen the Proper People get away with in US power plants, please do know that for any US facility with security equaling what you saw at this Hungary plant, it is potentially classified as critical infrastructure even though it is not in operation. If you, as a foreign national on a travel visa, ever got caught taking unauthorized photos or drone footage inside a secure area, you might be suspected of terror or espionage. Best case scenario: you spend a couple days in an interview room with the FBI and/or CIA, lose your photo and video equipment to an opaque federal evidence procedure, and possibly have your visa suspended just prior to being deposited at the nearest embassy or consulate for repatriation. If they decide they really don't like you for some reason -- for example, your passport includes stamps from fromer Eastern Bloc countries -- you'll wish you were back to dealing with the Italians. Anyway, keep up the good work, but stay safe!

Been watching alot these videos. This, and the way of just seeing life in general. We are such wasteful creatures...Use all these resources, metal, plastics, wood, etc etc. Then just to sit there to decay. From the bunker videos, all the metals and concrete used. Just to be used for a couple decades then to sit abandoned. To the machineries in other videos. And you wonder why we have a shortage of products, and the state of living is going to hell. Just a sad truth of how we are wasteful in more ways to 1. Anyways, keep showing us these awesome videos crew. I do love the history of it all. From cold war bunkers, the missle silos you visited in the States, to this one. It is all very interesting.

I would say the power station is a back up in case they need it. That's why they have security there.😁😁😁😁

Wish all abandoned places could be this well preserved, but people love to steal and vandalize. Such a shame.

As someone that got mauled by a German Shepherd nearly 15 years ago. I can attest 10/10 It's a experience you won't forget. Till this day if I see a large guard dog it's a nope for me.

@@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath In the Netherlands, Harlingen there was this abandoned shipyard. I'd been walking passed the fences a few times to scout it out did not see or hear any dogs. Hopped the fence and within seconds a German Shepherd came sprinting out of seemingly nowhere. I tried jumping the fence again but before I was over the dog got my leg. They are remarkably strong the dog pulled me back to the ground. Started mauling my leg and back it had me pinned for a good few minutes. Adrenaline kicked in and I went full survival mode. I don't know how but somehow I managed to pull myself up and over the fence. Adrenaline still pumping when I arrived at the doctor. I believe I ended up with around 50 stitches. Mostly upper leg and my back. Lesson learned, always make noise before hopping the fence to see if something comes running towards you
