I actually work in the mining industry, so that story is hitting quite close to home 😆 a planet without biosphere would be awesome, we wouldn’t need to worry about destroying anything or restoring anything. The least realistic part was the multiple blasts per day, in real mines they blast huge chunks of ore body that takes multiple days to clear out. Also plastic explosives aren’t really used, we can use ANFO if there isn’t any water that would destroy the amonium nitrate, if there is we can use a highly customizable blend of explosive that looks and feels like a yellowish mayonnaise. Plastic explosives like C4 aren’t really used as their detonation velocity are super high making them good at shredding steel but not so good at pushing rocks

No biosphere means you can just break the planet to pieces..allows access to the core for the heavy elements. Fast burning explosives do work for breaking rock but as you said not good for moving rock, so unless you want gravel....

Well, technically, the tanks aren't being tested. They work just fine. The notion of not using explosives for breaking rock is amazing, though. The Romans used massive fires and sudden cooling with water to create explosive fracture of mine wall faces in Britain. It's just that basic. Many thanks.

Actually surprising that they didn't use an airhorn to signal over shouting "fire in the hole" was a safety thing my pops was required to do and he had an entire truck floorboard covered in the cans. He was also a 38 year pro, once made a pool hole blow out the side so they only needed to clean the area of debris and smooth out the bed of the pool. Has 5 books of hardhat stickers from all the quarries and foundation building projects he'd been on.

As an underground coal miner, I have a very slight nitpick to get off my chest. If you are shoveling your minerals off the ground rather than digging underground to get them? Then that is not mining. That's farming.
@Wastelandman7000
@Wastelandman7000 2 ай бұрын
Serious answer: Kind of depends on local geology. If the rock isn't sufficiently stable to allow subterranean mining or the water table is too high you have to do strip mining. In this case I'd guess the rock strata was too unstable to allow tunneling. They did mention safety regs. I'm from Florida and the whole center of the state is dotted with phosphate strip mines. Here the water table is way too high and the rock way too soft to allow tunnels. Un-serious answer: but blowing up the whole hillside is more fun!!!
@theshadyprotector8412

Here in the midwest, there is a strong rivalry between surface and underground that at the end of the day means nothing, coal is coal. It's just a way a bunch of blue-collar country boys razz each other.

I can see it working that way. First, you're talking about a pompous government employee trying to regulate something that's not his field. Probably grew up on a space station or hive city and has never seen a mining operation in his life. Second, think about the humans who don't understand where the food in the supermarket comes from.... Despite this knowledge being easily available. So I can totally see some alien being completely ignorant of this stuff. Like I said, government employee.
