FULL Step by Step Guide to migrate Google to NAS - nascompares.co...
Pros and Cons of Making the Switch from Google Photos to NAS nascompares.co...
As many of you might know, Google has recently announced a change in its policy of allowing Android phone users to be able to backup up their photos without limits to their respective Google Cloud accounts. Till recently, if you were an Android phone user, you never really had to worry about the photos on your phone filling your capacity as android would periodically tell you that you can backup your photos to your personal cloud and free up space on your device. However from June 2021, Google will no longer allow unlimited photo backups from mobile devices and although the current photos that you have backed up will be safe, there are serious long-term repercussions that Android phone users should be aware of. For a start, your Google cloud account is actually used by numerous other services such as Google Drive file management and the even more important Gmail service. When the Google photo limitation comes into effect, all of your backed-up photos from that point onwards will be counted as part of your overall storage. Most users have a free subscription, between 2GB and 50GB of storage included with their Android device (depending on model and brand). When the Google photos limitation begins, there is every possibility that your Gmail will no longer function to receive emails and attachments until you delete photos from your Google drive that have suddenly accounted towards your total capacity. In order to counter this. Google is inviting users to purchase monthly and annual subscription services to the larger cloud storage capacities ranging from £1.79 to £79.99 with higher prices for business users. However, this is far more of a short-term solution and eventually, this rather meagre annual subscription capacity will also be maximized, as well as the inevitable likelihood that you are going to either, have to pay Google monthly forever or buy hardware to store your photos eventually. This is exactly what today’s article is about and today I want to talk to you guys about how to move over from Google photos onto your own NAS drive, how each brand handles your photo collection and what the benefits are of Synology and QNAP when making the switch.

thank you for such a detailed video! forgive me if I'm wrong but one thing is really confusing here: since July 2019 the google photos ON your google drive are NOT the nowadays Google photos - those two services are separated. by doing backup's with Cloud Sync one will backup photo's taken before mid July'2020 only. Up to now the only working method is to sync "new" Google photos to a folder on your PC and then sync that to your NAS... Am I wrong???

hmm. My photos from Google Photos didn't download using Cloud Sync. They are taking up 3/4 of my 200GB but the Cloud Sync only downloaded all other files. Nothing from Google Photos.

Just got gphotos-sync to work in a docker container. It's much faster than cloud sync which doesn't even support photos.

@SipanSalim

Those json files are very important because it contains all the meta information of the pictures from Google Photos library. The metadata like time-stamp, GPS coordinates etc. So FIRST you need to merge the json with the pictures otherwise your pictures are useless as Google has extracted all the information from it. This tutorial is totally ignoring this fact and it will ruin your library! Watch out! There are tools to merge those files, let me know if you need more info.

This means that you can't move your photos from Google Photos using the Cloud Sync. Why it is impossible? I think that Cloud Sync lacks few important features like possibility to move files instead of copying them and some conditionals like possibility to move files which are older then 1 month for example. Why it is so primitive? Any alternative for Cloud Sync? Anyone tried MultCloud for this, although I would prefer native Synology app to third party service getting access to my NAS.

Hey NASCompares - dumb random question - can you actually click into the photos in Map Display in Photo Station? My map shows me how many photos were taken in what location, but it doesn't let me click into that set of photos to view them - I can only see one photo when I mouseover

@@SipanSalim Hi - my pictures are showing up on the map in the right location - it's just that from the map screen, I can't click into that batch of pictures. E.g. pictures of a trip to America - they show on the map correctly, but I can't then click to the collection of all pictures taken in America. I can only see one picture when I mouse-over the map marker on the map. I can see how many were taken in that area, but I can't see the pictures

Hi Christoph! I have the same problem right now. I have 400GB of photos and videos. I started exporting everything (8 packages à50GB) and now have a lot of weird albums in these 8 packages. When I copy the albums (with the json-files) I have a lot of pictures in my Synology Photo app with a wrong date (date of today or date of export). Some pictures are correct. Do you have a solution?

google take out is dumb - using a cloud sync direct to Google photos is what I was expecting. Truenas does this nicely - but it is a PITA. Google take out is is really stupid on how it is organized. you can have duplicates. you could be downloading 300GB++ where you have 3 duplicates or more. Shame on Google - they do this on purpose to give up... what a mess google photos is.... Once you get your stuff out of the labyrinth of a mess -- congrats!
