This magma column is quite unique and not only popular by geologists but climbers as well. It can be seen from the highway trough Svarfaðadalur Valley near the official Arctic Coast Way in north Iceland but it's not simple to capture it on film so we don't see this very often in tourist brochures.

The nordic word Kælling (DA spelling) implies a horrible woman, not a feisty lady. It is an insult worse than "bitch" and similar to the English term "hag" . It doesn't imply the magic and wisdom of a witch, but all the bad stereotypes of a bad woman. The similar sounding male word Kjæltring (NO approx spelling) is a coward or crook .

So cool! GREAT that it stands out in such relief, too, in the headwall of a glacial cirque. That is some TOUGH rock! And so great to see the wonderful green of the lower countryside even in this northern part of your country. I was so impressed back in 1990, when I was at Pali Lookout on Oahu, and saw a similar feature cutting through the Hawaiian basalts - a feeder dike for some ancient eruption.

Because I hurt my foot during my trip to Iceland, instead of my original plans (hiking) I took a detour from route 1and drove around the Tröllaskagi peninsula, taking road 76 all the way up north to Siglufjordur and then road 82 down south. I did not notice this 'old lady' but have seen the most beautiful scenery of all times! This coastal route is definitely worth some extra time in your car, expecially on a day with nice weather and clear view.

Very cool! Isn't it great when nature gives us a cutaway view of geologic processes, for free! It you make a return visit, perhaps you could do a 'riding the elevator' shot, ascending parallel to the dyke while looking down? That feels like it would make for an interesting shot, and give a good perspective on the geometry of that feature.
