20th Century Studios’ “The Last Duel,” a gripping tale of betrayal and vengeance set against the brutality of 14th century France directed by visionary filmmaker and four-time Academy Award® nominee Ridley Scott (“The Martian,” “Black Hawk Down,” “Gladiator,” “Thelma & Louise”), opens in theaters nationwide October 15, 2021. The trailer and teaser poster for the film are available now.
The historical epic is a cinematic and thought-provoking drama set in the midst of the Hundred Years War that explores the ubiquitous power of men, the frailty of justice and the strength and courage of one woman willing to stand alone in the service of truth. Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France’s last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends turned bitter rivals. Carrouges is a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. Le Gris is a Norman squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him one of the most admired nobles in court. When Carrouges’ wife, Marguerite, is viciously assaulted by Le Gris, a charge he denies, she refuses to stay silent, stepping forward to accuse her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy. The ensuing trial by combat, a grueling duel to the death, places the fate of all three in God’s hands.
Oscar® winner Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” “Ford v Ferrari”) is Jean de Carrouges, two-time Academy Award® nominee Adam Driver (“Marriage Story,” “BlacKkKlansman”) is Jacques Le Gris, Emmy® winner Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve,” “Free Guy”) is Marguerite de Carrouges and two-time Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo,” “Good Will Hunting”) is Count Pierre d’Alençon. The screenplay is by Oscar nominee Nicole Holofcener (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) & Ben Affleck & Matt Damon based on the book by Eric Jager. The film is produced by Ridley Scott, Kevin J. Walsh (“Manchester by the Sea”), Jennifer Fox (“Nightcrawler”), Nicole Holofcener, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck with Kevin Halloran (“Ford v Ferrari”), Drew Vinton (“Promised Land”), Madison Ainley (“Justice League”) serving as executive producers.
“The Last Duel” is based on Eric Jager’s book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France, which brings the turbulent Middle Ages to life in striking detail. When etiquette, social aspirations and justice were driven by the codes of chivalry, the consequences for defying the institutions of the time - the Church, the nobility at court, a teenage king - could be severe. For a woman navigating these violent times, one who had no legal standing without the support of her husband, the stakes were even higher.
The Last Duel opens in U.S. theaters October 15, 2021.

In a perfect world Jodie Comer would get all the attention, recognition, and praises she deserves for her subtle, nuanced, poignant, utterly brilliant and beautiful performance in 'The Last Duel'. It's a crime how much she's been overlooked this award season.

i loved the film, but let's not get ahead of ourselves in praising Jodie Comer, she was great in the role, i don't disagree with any of your compliments of her, but her character didn't have to do much to make us suspend our disbelief. i'm no fan of Matt Damon or Ben Affleck, but we've seen them in so many other (typically crap Boston-centric) films that if we're going to talk about performances being overlooked, they deserve a mention before Jodie Comer, she has no baggage to overcome. i expected Ben Affleck to have that over-exaggerated Boston accent, i think he did great in his role! Matt Damon played his character fairly well too (although probably over-acted in a couple scenes imo, but that could be his direction, i'll never know).

I love how locked-in and methodical the cinematography is. It doesn't feel wasteful or erratic, and there isn't the usual schizophrenia of the ongoing rush of quick-cut footage punctuated by a random, lengthy establishing shot. Quick cutting might heighten the kinetic energy, but it doesn't give you a sense of place.

Jodie Comer is born to play in historical non/fiction. I don't know what it is exactly but her face is so unique and elegant i think she is perfect for medieval and renaissance themed projects. Saw it a couple days ago. The film gets tedious and tiresome with its replay of the same course of events from 3 different people, but the end duel makes up for it. For I have the pride, the privilege, nay, the pleasure of introducing to you to a knight, sired by knights. A knight who can trace his lineage back beyond Charlemagne. I first met him atop a mountain near Jerusalem, praying to God, asking his forgiveness for the Saracen blood spilt by his sword. Next, he amazed me still further in Italy when he saved a fatherless beauty from the would-be ravishing of her dreadful Turkish uncle. In Greece he spent a year in silence just to better understand the sound of a whisper. And so without further gilding the lily and with no more ado, I give to you, the seeker of serenity, the protector of Italian virginity, the enforcer of our Lord God, the one, the only, Sir mathus of dameon Thank you ill be here all week.

I love Ridley Scott's way of filming and telling a story. I wish he would do a Joan of Arc movie.

@@funkmachine9094 Yes, I know but I also know that 80% of the slack jaw people who are on here would scratch their heads if they read the correct name. And yes I do have that low of an opinion of most of humanity because they have shown themselves to deserve it.

If Ridley wanted to get the audience involved he'd make a movie about the Varangians of Constantinople and how they served the Emperor in their wars.
