Margaret Hoover talks to two conservatives-Amanda Carpenter of Protect Democracy and Heritage Foundation senior fellow Mike Gonzalez*-about the potential ramifications of another Donald Trump presidency.
This extended cut includes exclusive new material from a special Firing Line forum recorded before a student audience at Hofstra University, delving deeper into Trump’s agenda for a second term, its connections to Heritage’s Project 2025, and its impact on democracy.
Carpenter co-wrote “The Authoritarian Playbook,” which sounds an alarm about Trump’s dictatorial tendencies, and Gonzalez contributed to Project 2025, Heritage’s proposed agenda for the next conservative president that echoes many of Trump’s priorities.
As Trump issues promises and threats on the campaign trail, Carpenter warns the institutional guardrails that constrained him in the past would be weakened or eliminated in a new administration. However, Gonzalez maintains America and the world were better off during Trump’s first three years in office than in President Biden’s first three years.

This is an absurd discussion. Gonzalez is lying outright repeatedly. Even the interviewer looked like she wanted to laugh when she introduced him as being from the ‘non partisan heritage foundation’. He spouts lies repeatedly and instead of pointing out the lies, the subject is changed. You cannot have reasoned discussion with people who spout nothing but lies and propaganda.

I left the Republican party exactly 20 years ago because GWB lied us into war, and I'm a Vietnam vet; it's refreshing to see 2 intellectually honest Republicans in the same discussion in the age of Trump. But once you've allowed the claim of Heritage Foundation's non-partisanship, we couldn't expect anything honest from Mr. Gonzalez. Kudos to Ms. Hoover for truly remarkable skill keeping this discussion honest and relevant in the face of fact-free responses from Mr. Gonzalez, who works for the highly partisan so-called Think Tank that has prepared, among other things, Trump's plan for permanently disabling the civil service and turning it into a Trump machine to destroy the constitution.
