EXTENDED INTERVIEW: Parents of slain University of Idaho student

A man from Skagit County was among four people who were found dead in a home near the University of Idaho over the weekend.
The city of Moscow, Idaho identified Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Wash. as one of the victims Monday. Conway is about six miles south of Mount Vernon.
The other victims were identified as Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Ariz.; and Kaylee GonCalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho.
Officers with the Moscow Police Department were called to the home on King Road on Nov. 13 at 11:58 a.m. after reports of an unconscious person. When they got there, officers found four people who were dead. All four are University of Idaho students.
Police said the deaths are suspected homicides.

I am truly sorry for your priceless loss, and can only pray for you both and Evan's siblings. Also, thank you to the amazing reporter interviewing. Could not respect you more. Almost unheard of graciousness at this time of tragedy. Thank you for showing care to these hurting folks and not asking foolish, inappropriate questions.

To Mr.& Mrs Chapin, my heart goes out to you and you're son's 2 siblings. I am so sorry for you're horrendous loss of a child. You we're so gracious for speaking about what a terrific young man you're son was.♥️ I'm sure it hasn't all sank in yet with all that's going on. The local interviewer was very compassionate which you don't always see these days. You've raised 3 beautiful children and you both should be proud of yourselves. I will keep you and you're family in my prayers. You're son is an angel watching over you all and will always be there. There's nothing I could say will ease you're pain and I'm truly sorry. I feel so sorry for the families and the victims so horrible on them and when they interviewed Ethans parents I lost it felt so sorry for his mom and the dad but you could see the sadness in her face and her voice hope they get Justice for this evil criminal no one else life will be taken again not by him anyway 4 innocent lives lost at such a young a had there dreams a ahead of them what a shame evil 🙈 monster

Lost my 20 year old son 3 years ago. It's an unholy thing to deal with outliving your child. Not natural. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss and the others as well. This is gut wrenching. "I'm sorry" just doesn't cut it. This is a parent's worst nightmare. Losing a triplet must be unbelievably traumatic. My heart goes out to this entire family. It's understandable why you would want to do the interview, as painful as it must have been. Your son sounds like an incredible human being. The country is grieving with you. 💔

Just WOW ! The strength those parents have is immeasurably humbling. My 19 year old sister was murdered and raped in phoenix Arizona in 1992 and the pain NEVER goes away . I truly,truly have been broken ever since. Sending prayers and healing hugs to the entire Chapin family .

When she talked about driving away from the college, triumphant in the knowledge that “they did it!”, they raised 3 phenomenal kids, I broke. Sometimes this world is so cruel. This family will be in my thoughts. I genuinely hope they’re able to heal.

This interview broke me. They seem like such a wonderful family, and you could FEEL their grief. That momma was SO strong and insightful! Talking about learning to be 2 when they've always been 3?! I can't imagine the heaviness of grief of your CHILD, and trying to be fully present and fully supportive to your surviving children. It seems like so much to expect from anyone. Hugs, momma...

My cousin was a week away from graduating at San Diego state when her ex boyfriend murdered her.. I’ll never forget staying the night at her apartment with my aunt. I’ve never heard that cry before, you could literally hear her heartbreaking with each gasp… my heart goes out to the parents of all of these kids whose lives got stolen.. I hope whoever did this to them never has a good night of sleep, and the image of doing those horrendous things to them haunts them forever. It infuriates me that there’s so many garbage “human beings” out in this world ruining so many peoples lives by their selfish actions.. I pray to all things holy that the scumbag(s) are caught soon.

@@OneSeasonMan The victims were mostly killed in their sleep (except one who was tried to resist) but all of it could have happened pretty quietly. Also, they live in a house. You don't hear every step someone takes in a house. If I remember it right, they were all out partying before, so the other roommates were possibly hungover and slept tightly. A lot of people also fall asleep to some sort of noise, like falling asleep to rain-sounds, or simply the TV etc., which also makes it a lot less likely to hear what's going on in other rooms.

They were not asleep. D heard Caylee say “someone is here” to Maddie. And xana was eating food from door dash and filming on tik tok at 4:15 in morning. They were murdered shortly after. They didn’t fall asleep and get murdered in 15 minutes.

Mom appears to be processing by talking through until she can make sense of it. I'm sure she's driving her hubby crazy, as you are right, dad appears to be deeply in shock. Mom is still in shock as well, I'm sure... but like myself, it appears she 'babbles' when she's desperately trying to make sense of a problem. I wish this problem could be solved. My goal is to understand why these freaks are so evil in their intent. I don't want to 'profile' and arrest those we think could be like BK, but I think there is a way to identify and somehow keep tabs on the personality type, without invading their 'personal freedom'...I want to use this to find out how to stop the pscyho's from ruining anyone else's world.

My husband’s sister was murdered. It’s a horrible experience. She left behind two children. Her husband was convicted of her murder. This event is horrific. I feel profoundly sad for all the families affected by this senseless tragedy. It’s easy to think that eventually they’ll feel better. Maybe a little but this nightmare will never end. Please pray for these families…even the ones of the two girls not hurt. They too will face hard times.

Amazing parents. I’m certain they raised three exceptional humans. My heart breaks for them. Momma’s first concern was for her two other children and how they are coping. Like most mommas she’s put her babies first. The grief spilling out of Mr. Chapin is difficult to process.

This is one of the most heartbreaking interviews I’ve seen in a long time. Credit to the report for being respectful, kind, and maintaining a sense of decorum with boundaries. She made the interview all about Ethan, and gave these parents an opportunity to exactly what they wanted- no more, no less. Respect to the reporter. Prayers to the families.

I lost my daughter back in 1997 she was 18 and you never get overthe pain however you just learn to live with it. My heart breaks for them the roller-coaster of emotions they are going through. Hopefully they find who did this soon.

My heart goes out to the family. When the mom said “this is never going away,” I understood unfortunately. My dad committed suicide in June and I was the one to find him. It’s a completely different story, but the horror and grief are the same. People say…ohhh you’ll get through this in time. No you don’t. A piece of you has died. If you’re lucky you’ll adapt to it and maybe endure it. I’m just so sorry for the family!

I am in awe of the mother and father’s strength. I do know from personal experience that talking about your loved one, sharing your pain, is very cathartic. I am so sorry that there are 4 sets of parents going through this. Not to mention all the ones who knew and loved them. I can only send prayers and positive thoughts to all involved. I'm literally bawling my eyes out. These parents they seems so genuine and supportive of their children. I can't fathom a loss like this.. I'm so terribly sorry. I am one of two sisters and I just absolutely can not imagine losing a sibling. It'll be so tough, I pray that the families are able to find some peace, and I also pray that we can find the murderer & get them locked up for life.

I lost my brother in 2011 also a war veteran. He served right after 911, he was a medic. He did two tours-saved lives and saw his buddies pass away. He was my hero. But he actually passed because of a motorcycle accident- an illegal underage immigrant smashed into him at a red light. He was also 27. As his sister it is hard to grow in age knowing he never had the chance to. I am now 34 with 5 kids. I just wonder who he would be today. That is the hardest part about losing someone. But I think God has helped for me- not sure about you. But God has a way into my heart and soul to forgive and know he will be there in heaven for me. I just can't imagine losing my own son or daughter at all let alone to a slaying like this :(. Sorry for you loss :(
