At 2:50PM Monday afternoon, Lehigh County 9-1-1 transmitted a rescue box for the 300 block of 14th Street in the Borough of Catasauqua sending Rescue 2 and Engine 211.
Once on scene, the fire officer reported a car into a tree with heavy entrapment.
One person was in the car when it slid sideways into a tree heavily pinning the male in the car. With all the tools such as the Jaws of Life in-service and the complexity of the rescue, an additional rescue company from Whitehall was special-called.
Firefighters worked for almost an hour to free the driver. Paramedics worked on the patient as the firefighters cut the car apart piece by piece. The drivers legs were pinned under the dashboard.

I have been a firefighter for almost 8 years and im telling you one thing it is amazing how being apart of a brotherhood / sisterhood that cares about one another so much. I put my life in their hands every call we go on and they put their life in mine. But just being able to help someone either make it out of a fire or car crash or something as simple as calming someone down is the best feeling. Helping my community is why i do what i do and i love helping people. I am a volunteer and i wouldn't change a thing.

Thank you first responders for all that you do. From someone whose been in a car wreck few years back sadly no one bothered to call 911 for whatever reason but the person who hit us started yelling at my hubby and of course i threatened to hurt the person. now have to deal with spinal injuries for life cause of it. but thank you for all you do and keep us safe even during wildfires you are the frontline workers. I been thinking of going back to trying to do CERT for my local fire dept. although tough to come upon these wrecks its not a job for the weak hearted for sure. thank you.

those jaws of life are incredible cutting through that ultra high strength steel like it is butter. Folks don't realize how strong these uni-body cars are. The outer painted part of a car is for looks and not that strong but underneath is two, three and sometimes four layers of ultra high strength steel that will dull a drill bit in seconds.

The requirement for a good rating in the pole test was raised substantially in 2012, every vehicle made after 2012 is a thousand times safer in this type of accident, also the small offset test was implemented in 2012 by the IIHS and pretty much every car made after 2015 has aced that test.

At the accident we had, one moron came up to the car and started taking pictures with his mobile. I got hold of him and nearly shoved his phone where the sun don't shine. If you can't help, show the poor victims a bit of decency and feck off.

First, they spent a lot of time on a door that was about as far from the extraction as they could get. Back in the day we had mostly hand tools and not much power stuff. Chains, blocks and come-alongs. These 15-30 minute extractions in newer cars with no full frame, I do not understand, but I don't have modern training. Everything seem s to take longer - to get a hose charged, to get geared up, to extricate, everything. Back in the day, someone would be on fire standby with a charged line, no matter how things looked. Again, I'm from the way back, probably ignorant of todays methods.

This extraction took far too long and there were far too many guys hanging around without a designated task. No one appeared to be in command! This is a weekly occurrence for brigades where I live. 1. Off with the roof (get yourselves a set of faster hydraulics guys: should take a minute tops). 2. Door off (1 minute tops). 3. Now you're in with a clear working area and can start pushing firewalls back off legs and cutting through steering columns. 4. Why did the 2 guys mess about trying to open the bonnet? (cut off battery power so no chance of an electrical short??) They stuffed around for a long time then walked away from the task without completing it. (??) A few things to work on your training days guys! Teamwork! Faster hydraulics!!

For our department at least, cutting power is a must. Edit: I'd imagine if it's a rule for ours something has gone wrong. If the car catches fire we do rapid extrication, but then the patient is at risk for long term deficits.

@@cathywhite9415 Not a firefighter but a (now retired) highway patrol police Constable covering a vast rural area that included several major highways with plenty of experience (36 years) attending crashes. So, plenty of experience working with fire brigades extracting victims of road crashes from mangled vehicles. I have shown several brigades this clip. Comments / feedback were all similar. 1. Lack of effective leadership / direction. 2. Hydraulic cutter too slow; roof and door should have been off quicker 3. Why did up to 3 firefighters spend so much time attempting to take off the bonnet (most likely in an attempt to disconnect the battery) then abandon the task and proceed to just stand about observing the proceedings? The many fire brigades that I dealt with at crash scenes were all well trained and well versed in cutting apart motor vehicles at crash scenes. Always done rapidly, very rapidly, ....... a lot quicker than this clip showed.

Just out of curiosity, how would they be able to bust a back window of there is baby in the backseat in a rear face car seat? Is that what those big thick blanket type things are for?
